TVMcGill, DESTA, Youth In Motion, along with many others worked together to create a documentary that gets to the heart of Little Burgundy, a neighbourhood in the Sud-Ouest borough of the city of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The Burgundy Voices documentary project followed a community participation model weekly where meetings were held where we all discussed the project, share story ideas, took part in open workshops, filmed and edited the movie.
Meg Cramer, a non-fiction and documentary producer, Charly Feldman, a documentary filmmaker, and Imaan Browne, a music producer, freelance artist and writer worked diligently to complete this project within a month and a half schedule.
The whole process was documented on this website: voicesofburgund...

absolutely wonderful and inspiring this documentary is and the billingualism is very important! We need more like this-- showing all the wonderful people and organizations that help youth and citizens battle against the effects of gendrification, racial profiling and lack of access to quality education and what real communities and enriched cultures of MOntreal look like! Passion and determination and resiliency rage on!

I lived in Burgundy for 20 years, 86 to 06. Without a doubt the most magical borough in Montreal! I was 8 when we moved in the neighborhood, Burgs saw me grow up! Although I left over 15 years ago, my parents are still there and so is a piece of my ❤️PS: Miss me some of those hot wings over at Shabbazz on georges vanier!

Such a great doc. I am an ex student of "Doorways" at James Lyng - I will say, if it werent for my great teachers, principal Pat Buttino and my guidance councelors Emma and Joyce - I would not be a 3rd year Concordia University Student : ) - my high school at James Lyng had to endure many many pain while I was there - we were included in the ceremony's to mourn those murdered - who were our age at the time - we said our feelings at mass - went to funerals often - but - we also had the most close knit group of any high school around (trust me, been there, done that) at Doorways all the teachers treated you like people, the guidance councelor was always a friend you could confide in - even the principal wasn't so scary...(yes, he was) lol.....the Sud-Ouest especially Little Burgundy is deserving of recognition and documentation - which there is not much of.....Thank you, South WEst - Burgundy and my High School (after I was sent to) Doorways - James Lyng for making me that much stronger, that much wiser and the more understanding and compassionate towards everone. Big up Burgzzz xo

Ha ha ha I feel nostalgic about that neighborhood. I came to Canada in 1981 and live in little burgundy for 2 years then moved to cote des neiges .I lived in Montreal from 81 to 89 ( thank God for the Jewish community who trusted me to renovate their homes and was able to make a good living) but never felt at home in Montreal because of the language and the blatant racism .My wife and I later move to Toronto ( what a breath of fresh air ! ) and been happy ever since.

The PROVINCE of quebec is Unilingual French. Montreal is a rather multicultural city. Notre Dame de Grace and Little Burgundy and Westmount to some effect are more English/mixed speaking neighbourhoods in Montreal proper, as well as student neighbourhoods around McGill and Concordia Universities. The East of the city is more French. The provincial government services are generally provided in French with little english support. In Canada there are pockets of French speaking communities.

@shadowbaghdig - Thank you! There are many more projects like this in the works by the Community Action Toolkit at Mcgill University. I suggest for you to check it out if you want more ideas of what they are doing in the community, and to see what other projects they are involved with. Enjoy, and remember everything starts with one idea.

Unfortunately, we do not. The subtitles are for the french speaking part only because Little Burgundy has a vast anglophone community
