The REM verges on a true Megaproject when it comes to Transit in North America, and it's an absolute marvel of engineering and efficiency! What I think impresses me even more is how modular it is an expandable: Imagine you had a Laval Branch, or extended it deeper into the South Shore or North Shore, or even added a one-station extension to connect Trudeau Airport to Dorval Train station as is currently being discussed. You could even make Montreal's planned Pink Line a more REM-like system. This is my favourite new Transit project in North America!! Good on you Montreal, hoping for good things to eventually come of Ottawa's LRT! And as always, keep up the great work you guys!

Indeed, with an automated system you can change things like service frequency with a few clicks of a mouse.
@gelu88
@gelu88 4 года назад
@@RMTransit I want to push back a bit. Yes you can modify frequency very easily, but adding a new branch is very problematic. Initially the system will run 24 trains an hour. Of these 12 will go to DM, and 6 each to the other two lines. If a 4th branch is added to Laval or to the east, this will cut frequency to all the other segments. a separate unconnected line is ideal, but selling a line with a extra transfer is politically difficult

@@RMTransit Eventueally, yes. But such a connection would not really bring any additional overall revenues to the REM operator (CDPQ), which will get a subsidy by passenger/km, plus the fares paid. @alexstuart1849
@alexstuart1849 4 года назад
RMTransit if they wanted an actual connection with Dorval they should have used the CN line to Dorval. Of course since the privatization it is near impossible, but ideally that is what should be done. Then comes the fact that the REM isn’t about good transit, which becomes very clear when you realize that the construction in the tunnel isn’t taking into account VIA’s HFR (many other factors that I have mentioned in another comment as well, all boiling down to la Caisse wanting to develop a bunch of land). Meaning that VIA will have to have to back out of Montreal station to go from QC to Windsor. If they can’t even get that right, I really doubt that they will connect with EXO Dorval/ VIA Dorval.
@shangqijian6655
@shangqijian6655 4 года назад
@@alexstuart1849 I don't think VIA has to back out as they seem to be running their trains bidirectional with locomotives on both ends. Also, the CN line that VIA rails runs on is south of a pair of CP rail that EXO runs on, so a line from Gare Central would have cross over the CP lines that come from Lucien L'allier. There is also an abundance of freight traffic along the CP and CN line that would conflict with REM schedules.

Sometimes you hear lines like "The only reason the REM is cheap is because they're doing X or Y" which always struck me as an odd way to dismiss the price. It's cheap because smart cost effective decisions were made? Great! Let's do that all the time.
@RMTransit
@RMTransit 4 года назад
Well, yeah to a degree. The Canada Line in Vancouver represents the extreme of this thinking. It was underbuilt and while it's ok now it will run out of capacity in the not so distant future. Fortunately I think the REM really gets the value engineering right, leading to both a cost effective project and room for long term growth.
@PaigeMTL
@PaigeMTL 4 года назад
@@RMTransit I've never heard someone say "The REM is cheap because it has a low capacity" it's cheap because it uses existing rails, piggy backed on other infrastructure projects and went to neighborhoods where it could run above ground more easily. That doesn't mean they went for low cost the whole way, more that expenses were rational. As an example the platform doors seem like they're a safety thing, but in Montreal they're what allow the stations to have climate control. That's a big selling point over existing services. It costs more, but it's a well reasoned choice.
@alexstuart1849
@alexstuart1849 4 года назад
Oh yeah, because it is cheaper to spend 5.9B to rip up the most advanced rail line in canada (25000V AC, bilevel trains, hybrid locos) (instead of adding more trains) to permanently ruin the VIA HFR network and putting thousands pf people out on the roads for at least 2 years. Those people are never gonna switch back to the train because they will be cramped like in a metro for 40 minutes. This is forgetting the carbon cost of all the concrete, they are going to elevate the line on concrete practically everywhere, even on the old ROWs. And the fact that they are ordering the “trains” from india, talk about a green project. The Champlain bridge is already falling apart due to corrosion, and the prehistoric 1500V DC of the REM will only make this worse (The rails are the ground to the circuit). Point is, we really did not have to ruin the DM line for this. The PQ’s grand déblocage was a much better plan: tram/light rail from downtown to airport and the south shore, many more busses to everywhere, a renovation of the Mont Royal tunnel (which is necessary) All the while keeping what exists. How can anyone say the REM is utilizing preexisting infrastructure while it is actively ruining it. It is not allowing actual trains on the line, and is going to mean the premature scrapping of hundreds of very expensive locos and rolling stock. Instead of paying a few million for a tweaking of the existing network, you are spending a few billion on a transit system that will not work (light rail on ice 10 metres up!) and nobody on board in case of an emergency. I was hoping that Covid would put and end to this insane project, but sadly the government that be decided otherwise. Because as most people living in QC know, everything built in MTL is a product of the construction Mafia, and this is not a transit system, it is in fact a way for La Caisse to develop its land. Light rail is for short distances. Period. The Deux Montagnes line shouldn’t be touched past the MR tunnel.

The biggest reason for the speed of construction on the REM vs say, Toronto is money. All the money was available up front. In Ontario, in order to cook the books so to say, to make debt seem less, money is doled out slowly, piecemeal. It means that parts of the projects need to be broken up into many RFPS, which causes disorganization and delays, and honestly overall a larger expense. Just spread out to hide the full costs.

Great video, but a couple of small errors. The new stations are explicitly NOT designed to be expanded in length. So if the system is ultimately congested, adding in longer cars is not a easy upgrade. Also, the airport REM station is NOT the one built a decade ago. due to the train coming from the north as opposed to from the south, the old terminal was useless. the REM will involve building a brand new station under what is now the parking structure. The old station is currently used as car parking, and will eventually be converted into office space or something.
@erictremblay4940
@erictremblay4940 4 года назад
You are totally right. REM stations are set up to handle a maximum of 6 cars train sets. They hope to handle the increase of ridership by increasing frequencies. It makes sense to me as it helped to keep costs down. If in 30 years, the REM is at full capacity, we should then make additional REM lines to pick up some of the slack (like converting the Montreal - Hudson train to REM etc)
@zop3
@zop3 4 года назад
@@erictremblay4940 Problem is, full capacity will most probably be reached much quicker than 30 years. And there's not a lot of space for increasing frequencies, especially at rush hour, with trains coming in the main branch every other minute. That's REM's bottleneck and main flaw.

Great video, but I should probably underline some of the project's flaws. The first and most important one is the bottleneck in the Mont-Royal tunnel, where 3 branches merge into one. At the opening, trains should run about every 2 minutes at rush hour, which doesn't leave much room to increase frequency and, thus capacity (since, contrary to what is said in the video, the stations - especially those on the main downtown branch - were NOT designed to be extended). Should the REM network extend to new areas in the long term, a new North-South link will be required to accommodate the increase in ridership. The other major flaw would be that some branches were designed not to respond to present demand but to create new one (and to make the CDPQ capture the rise in land value through new construction projects around future stations) by going to low-density residential - or even rural - areas, thus feeding urban sprawl.
@RMTransit

@@RMTransit The Edouard-Montpetit one would be extremely difficult to extend, as would all the underground stations of the downtown section (maybe Bonaventure even more considering its location in Montreal Central train station). @RMTransit
@RMTransit 4 года назад
Yes but just use Selective door operations?
@zop3
@zop3 4 года назад
@@RMTransit Yes, that's technically feasible indeed. But the problem is that the busiest stations will be the underground ones on the main branch (Édouard-Montpetit, McGill, and Bonaventure), so that would severely limit selective door operation's potential as a replacement for platform extension. This whole issue is my main disappointment with this project... and the reason why new branches are unlikely (in their current projected forms). But I do hope we can use the REM to extend Montreal's transit system in the future... we'll only have to consider new North-South branches going downtown

This is a very interesting project. I was glad to work on it. Also working on Ottawa LRT Phase 2 right now. REM I think learned from many mistakes from the Ottawa LRT and return of experience. The biggest difference will be the Systems. Alstom is supplying all the CBTC systems as well as the trains. Aother major difference is that Alstom will have 1 year with a test track to test their trains and systems while the rest of the infrastructure gets built. However REM will not be without any faults, there are a lot of studies being prepared at the moment but there is also a lot of unknowns: will the switch heaters work better than Ottawa Phase 1? Will the snow clearing equipment and maintenance equipment be compatible with the rest of the infrastructure? Will it be maintained to European Standards? I work for Exo, who runs the trains and buses of the South and North shores of Montreal, and I can tell you Covid really made it easier for us with the massive reduction of service that was coming on the Deux-Montagnes line. We were losing our most busy train line and the mitigation measures were not enough for the train users, March 30th was coming fast and it was set to be a total mess... Covid gave us time to implement new bus lines, shuttles and the government eventually decided to add reserved bus lanes on many highways to make it efficient. A lot less people needs to go downtown, but so far our strategy holds and people from DM can actually get to downtown in less than an hour, seated comfortably with no stops on the way... Many people from DM chose this city and this region because of the train line. The REM came out of nowhere and many felt like it was being "stolen" from them. They made noise, groups formed, they claimed the measures were not enough (they were right) and the upcoming months (years) were going to be really hard to deal with, even some of them were on the move... In the end, the REM is a great project that required some people to make sacrifices, and with some luck (Covid), the transition from train to REM happens to be easier, smoother and less controversial, than it should have been.

Our biggest complaint (I'm a Montrealer) is that the REM is a private project done by the Caisse de dépôt, and they force all other transit systems to connect to the REM. For example, the South Shore had frequent bus lines going from two terminals in Brossard to downtown. Now, those frequent bus lines will be removed, and instead of sending regular bus lines to the two bus terminals, they will go to REM stations. The Caisse de dépôt is using the REM as a showcase to sell the system elsewhere.

@RMTransit 3 года назад
REM isn't a private project, it's funded using Government funds and funds from public workers pensions for use by the Public. Forcing buses to connect to it is logical as a big part of the goal is to reduce bus congestion.

The first REM cars hit the tracks recently for testing. They run from their depot/service center at Quartierdix30 (A30/A10) in Brossard to the new Samuel de Champlain bridge.

one of the reason why the progress was so fast with the REM construction is because they are construction all the different parts at the same time. Also, they are not designing for years before starting to build. Once something is designed, they build and then move on to design the next part.

Cost is being massively underestimated to make it palatable to the public. Look back at the history of large public engineering projects in the province of Quebec and you'll see massive differences between the announced cost and the final tally, often multiple times more expensive. As a Montrealer I am looking forward to the completion of this project, we need it badly! But nobody here believes the announced cost or completion dates.

I’m still trying to get my head around how an smallish automatic lightish rail system can replace heavy commuter rail. I’d say you haven’t fully explained how this new REM system will integrate with the current heavy commuter rail. I’ve recently been to Montréal, and the Metro was excellent, and the city eminently walkable. Thus I had to learn more about Montreals transit plans. So, once again, are you coming up with an explanation of how REM will intergrate with the current heavy commuter rail? Just my 5¢, I’m otherwise very satisfied with your channel! :)
@ZontarDow
@ZontarDow 2 года назад
The integration is the station at Cote-De-Liese being the end of the Repentigny-Mascouche line which will bring people downtown faster then the old Mascouche line on that part did due to the REM's higher speed, and a connection to the Saint-Jerome line at Canora that will also bring people downtown faster then remaining on the Saint-Jerome line all the way downtown. This is on top of doubling the old Deux- Montangue line's capacity by replacing it. How it's doubling hourly capacity for the former heavy rail line that it's replacing stems from frequency because the old line had a train with 1900 capacity that had 9 departures between 6 am and 9am while this will have a train pair with 780 capacity having 54 departures in that same timeframe. This gives it a maximum capacity 146% higher then the heavy rail line it's replacing during rushhour, with the line having 2 way service on top of that and, while reduced, also having off peak service that the old heavy rail line did not.

@@ZontarDow Interval is indeed the key here. You are clearly a local (or at least intimately familiar with the system). Canada isn’t so bad when it comes to rail (although it could do better). 😊 This new system is clearly a step in the right direction. I’m just a tad sceptic to automatic "suburban rail". Intriguing. Any idea how long that infrastructure will last? Seems every concrete structure built in the 70s is now crumbling so while cheaper, I wonder if the cost and wait for underground transit is all that bad in the long run. Feels like politicians trying to get things done in a hurry, much like a lot of infrastructure that didn't last. Hope I'm wrong since I thoroughly love public transit and dream of a future where large parts of cities are devoid of personal vehicles.

a good ascessment of what the project is and I would say its only shortcommings are a lack of connection to Dorval intermodal station where Via and AMT are in Dorval, and a lack of vision to share the Mont Royal Tunnel with Via for a future high speed line to Ottawa and Toronto.

@abdulkareemh 4 года назад
I believe there is a push to connect Côte-Vertu station with Bois-Franc REM station too, more so due to the fact that additional metro tunnels were constructed beyond Côte-Vertu station which significantly reduces the length of new tunnels required to reach Bois-France REM.

It's unfortunate that commuters on the Mascouche line will no longer have a direct link to the downtown core. Because the Mont-Royal tunnel will be used exclusively for the REM, Mascouche commuters will have to switch to the REM in Town of Mont-Royal to continue their journey. In an ideal world they would convert the Mascouche line to another REM branch

Now, I must ask: What's to become of the MR90s and ALP-45DPs currently running on the Deux-Montagnes Line? Montreal's upcoming REM trains' rolling stock--Alstom Metropolis--will be virtually identical to what the Sydney Metro already has had in place since last year. The one major difference is that the REM will only have 4-car and 2-car trains in service and not 6-car trains--at least not for a few years, anyway. The only thing that really irks me is that stupid gigantic parking lot they're building around Brossard station... I mean, I know they're gonna plant trees and stuff, but wouldn't it be better to just build an elevated parking lot instead?
