Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Paul Mcartney, Michael Jackson and The Police are just a few of the musicians who recorded albums at Sir George Martin's AIR Montserrat studios. Tragically, the studio was never rebuilt after hurricane Hugo demolished 90% of buildings on Montserrat in 1989. Only 5 years later, a local volcano awoke with devastating results. The on-going eruptions at Montserrat's Soufriere Hills Volcano (one of the longest erupting volcanoes of its type) have since rendered two-thirds of the island uninhabitable. Amazingly, even in the face of these horrific natural disasters, Montserratian spirit remains indomitable. Nowhere is this spirit stronger than in the voices of Montserrat's local musicians. Native son Alphonsus Cassell, a.k.a 'Arrow,' swept Soca into the international spotlight with hits like 'Hot Hot Hot', 'Groove Master' and 'Long Time'. With Arrow's death in 2010, the torch has passed to Pat 'Belonger' Ryan who's lyrical calypso 'Still home... still nice' embodies the hopes, and the heart of Montserrat - a Caribbean nation who will overcome.
