I saw this in a theater at a midnight screening of the very first showing. People were LITERALLY falling out of their seats with laughter, and that was just during the credits! I kid you not. My stomach was so sore from laughing at the beginning, that it took me another 20 minutes before I could laugh comfortably again. It was one of the best experiences of my life. When we all left the theater, that was one of the happiest movie audiences I've ever been a part of.

I think the 70's was kind of the transition period. I may be wrong, but although it wouldn't have every single person that worked on the film like nowadays, would be possible to see a director's credit and the producing company. But since you don't even have a "the end" (like old movies) I think the joke still works.

@@medalion1390 that’s definitely true, it was still common to have credits at the beginning at this time. If you saw this in the theater back in the day... odds are you were a Python fan Kd you knew what to expect .. they had a TV show that was this exact kind of silly, random humor. The movies came after the show ended. This came out around when the U.S.finally got to see the show via PBS in the early 70s

Although the Pythons were already beloved here in the UK they became enormous once PBS in the US started to run the show, so big in fact that it was sort of a rennaisance for the guys who would go on to perform at the Hollywood Bowl. All of the Pythons have since said that it was their success in the US that gave each of them the finances to do bigger and better things. Though the one downside being the movie Yellowbeard. I was rolling on the floor laughing at the boxer, Ken Clean Air System, taking a lunch break and rubbing gravel into his scalp, while at the same time, my cousin's friend was standing beside me saying "This is not funny!" I don't remember if it was before or after that evening, that the Holy Grail was being shown in a theater down town, that had an afternoon matinee, that allowed me to get in for $2. Talk about diving into the deep end of the pool. Most of us back then did know what we were getting into watching a Monty Python movie. They had been around a while with a show on the BBC that was shown on PBS, public broadcasting in the States. This was them at their most off-the-wall. All their movies are pretty good. They were certainly on a small budget. It meant they could only afford one horse, which lead to the most iconic joke of them using the coconuts. Can't wait to see what you watch next.

One of the more subtle things about this is that in the original Arthurian myths, the Quest for the Holy Grail was considered unachievable. It was done for the protagonist to discover themselves through the attempt, not to actually get the magic item. So the fact that this film has no real ending actually fits that theme. I for one *DID SEE THIS MOVIE AT THE THEATER WHEN IT WAS RELEASED,* multiple times since there was no internet, cable or home video. *LOVED IT EVERYTIME I SAW IT.* Matter of fact. First time I saw this film. The actual theater got in on the joke. When the intermission came on. The theater turned on the house lights & closed/opened the screen curtain (which protected the screen from getting dirty plus it added to the movie going experience (theaters didn't show ads back then - curtain opened either you got the movie or coming attractions in the 1970's). Back then it was very rare movies went over two hours at length. If the movie did go over say two hours. They would have an 10 minute intermission for movie goers use the restroom &/or go to snack bar. But that theater had it timed just right. Making that joke even hilarious. *WHY NO HORSES.......* The 7 men (6 Brits & 1 Yankee) who made up the comedy troupe called Monty Python was very popular with the young in America when PBS (Public Broadcasting System) began airing the late 1960's BBC Monty Python's Flying Circus TV series (a very random TV comedy skit show that will go anywhere). Monty Python built a cult following in the 1970's. *WHY NO HORSES IN THE MOVIE??* No one in the troupe knew how to ride a horse. Very random. Besides, riding a horse wouldn't be as funny as a grown man skipping while another man banging two coconuts together would be. Very random.

You did fairly well for your first time watching this movie. When you asked about what the animation is about, it precedes the tale of each knight and it lightly represents what each knight is about. The sun and clouds were keeping the scribe up, "weather keeping you up at knight, hint hint", and the forcefulness of him telling the sun and clouds to clear off and leave him alone is the power of Sir Gallahad who follows that animation and ridiculously kills all those people at the wedding. Same thing with the knight who gets to the castle Anthrax with all those women in it. The animation right before his tale was a priest who jumps too far and springs onto the place where a nun is sitting and he stops upside down with his frock falling over his bum, and you can hear the nun muttering with surprise and excitement.

At the time the movie was released, if you went to see it in the theater, you already knew who Monty Python was from their skit-based TV show and you would not have been the least bit surprised about what happened during the movie. That's true in general, if you found the Monty Python TV show before their movies, you would know exactly what you were getting into.

When I was a teenager I watched this movie with my dad, who had seen it a lot. He laughed his ass of at me at the end because of the look on my face. I imagine it was the same look she had and I had a hell of a laugh from it. As entertaining as the movie is her reaction was even better. Well done.

Hats to you for picking this movie at random for the first reaction. It's uncommon for someone so young to understand MP humor at first try, but you got it. Fun fact: this movie contains over 500 jokes, including opening credits, so average avery 15 seconds there is a joke, that's why is so hard to react and keep attention. Anyways keep reacting to random movies and I'm giving subscribe ;-) PS: sorry if my english is incorrect, it's not my native.

There's something very Monthy Python to someone born in the 2000s watching The Holy Grail as the first movie from the 1970s and wondering if that's not how all movies used to be. It's just too perfect.

As others have said back in the day memorizing the lines of this movie was a thing. A friend of mine and I in our freshman year of high school watched it so many times. We made a tape cassette of it and then I took the time to type up the dialogue of the script while playing it back on tape. We would walk around reciting it. Oh yes, and we were the coolest kids in school. 😆

It's possible that Airplane would never have been filmed but for Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Similarly, Saturday Night Live was intended to be the American Monty Python. If you watch their original sketches, they were nearly as absurd as Pythons were. Land Shark!

Loved your take and your reaction, especially as you don't know anything about Monty Python. Monty Python was a British sketch show that's full title was Monty Python's Flying Circus that had this kind of comedy and sketches that would just go into the next one. The animation was done by the only American in the team Terry Gilliam. The other 5 main members were Terry Jones, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Michael Palin and Graham Chapman. They did 3 main films, this one, Monty Python's Life of Brian (which was controversial when it was made) and The Meaning of Life. (which was really a collection of their sketches). The lack of horses and strange ending was because of lack of money (it had a budget of just US$400,000) they couldn't afford horses and at the end they just ran out of money. It was a relative success, bringing in US$5 million at the box office. I recommend you watching Life of Brian if you enjoyed The Holy Grail, Life of Brian in my opinion is the best of the 3 films. Looking forward to what film you choose to do next. Good start. :).

Absurdity of existence, that's what Monty Python is all about. It's a very British sense of humor, but it is universal. A good follow up to this one would be "Life Of Brian" or (for something not made by the Monty's) "Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy". You started with the best, now try the rest! 😁

"I feel like with the whole movie they're just messing with you." And, with that statement, you now fully understand Monty Python. :D And there is "meaning" in what Python does, but you have take a moment to figure it out. For example, monks hitting themselves on the head was a a snipe at a period of history where some did go about "punishing" themselves for their sins. The overly detailed Holy Hand Grenade instructions were a poke at some passages of the Bible. And the whole "Bring out your dead" sequence was a "punking" of various plagues in history. That said, my suggestion is, just keep randomly pulling from that list. I applaud you for doing so. I can't say you'll love them all, but you will enjoy a large portion of them. Even the black & white ones.

This movie is weird, but in the best way. I was a teen when this came out, and back then we expected this form of chaos in our comedies. Movies like Young Frankenstein, Airplane, Top Secret, Blazing Saddles, and many others by Mel Brooks or the Zucker, Abrahams, Zucker team taught me, and all of us, what - not only what comedy can be - but also what comedy should be. I owe my sense of humor to these creative geniuses, and many other period specific, comedy greats. Great reaction! It is soooooooo much fun watching someone watch this for the first time. Keep up the great work and post more often!

That was fun. Watching your reaction when you knew nothing about Monty Python was great! 😄 As has been stated, their forte was sketch comedy. They pretty much made it up as they went along. We all loved quoting the movie: "Your father was a hamster, and your mother smelled of elderberries!" By the way, a familiarity with medieval history is helpful. The "bring out your dead" scene refers to the Plague that scourged Europe. The monks were a reference to some of the more bizarre religious orders in reaction to the Plague, including the self-flagellant sects. They were reciting Gregorian chants, that came from that period. My suggestion for your next movie: Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddle. Brooks has a career that spans decades, and is famous for many great movies. Warning: the language is NSFW, but only to mock & belittle bigots. Or, if you want less non-PC language, try Abbot & Costello's Who's On First? Not a full movie; more of a stand alone skit. ... Depending on how often you upload your reactions, you could easily spend several months reacting to Mel Brooks movies. They're generally parodies.

"Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!" Fun Fact: The famous depiction of galloping horses by using coconut shells (a traditional radio-show sound effect) came about from the purely practical reason that the production simply could not afford real horses. Metal Funding Fact: Funds earned by Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon (1973) went towards funding this movie. The band were such fans of the show, they would halt recording sessions just to watch Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969). Led Zeppelin and Genesis contributed to this movie's budget as well. Swallow This Fact: The airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow is roughly eleven meters per second, or twenty-four miles per hour, beating its wings seven to nine times per second rather than forty-three. It's true: a five-ounce bird cannot carry a one pound coconut, but furthermore, no swallow weighs five ounces. The English barn swallow weighs only twenty grams (two-thirds of an ounce). Historical Fact: The French tactic of pelting Arthur and his knights with livestock echoes the relatively modern legend of a medieval siege of the fortified southern French town of Carcassonne. Said to have been near starvation, the townspeople used the last of their food to pelt the besieging army to convince them, suffering likewise, that the town was well stocked with food and that the siege was hopeless. The tactic was successful, and the siege was lifted.
@davidblauyoutube
@davidblauyoutube Год назад
Funnier Fact: Because the "famous historian" was killed by a man riding a horse, he clearly was NOT part of Arthur's group! Also, the insults were pretty well researched. Hamsters were the ancient equivalent of rabbits (as in, breeding a lot), so "your mother was a hamster" is saying she slept around. And elderberries were (and still are) used to make wine, so "your father smelt of elderberries" is calling him a drunk. 🤣
