Classic movie, I once tried to show it to a Born Again Christian and she stormed out of the room and called it religious pornography, no sense of humor.
It doesn't show how religion works, only how blind faith works. This scene can be related to some ideologist or most of the people, because most of the people doesn't care what the truth is. They would believe in any messiah, if the messiah made them happy. In my opinion.

As a muslim, I partially love this scene. There are indirect real life reference regarding messiah. Real life messiah never claims himself as messiah untill he is qualified enough by society.
