That was obviously one helluva tasting! It's great to have a small group and a host who loves what they're doing. I haven't visited Glen Scotia yet, but you've now delivered 6 or 7 excellent reasons for making a bee-line for their warehouse doors. Next time I'm in Campbeltown this will be a must. Cheers!

Hello Phil & Deepa! You have mentioned this tasting quite a few times on different episodes and that was one of the reasons I booked the dunnage warehouse experience for my trip to Campbeltown last week. How could I not, if it is the best tasting you guys have ever had! 😉 We started off with a tour and while I was expecting a tour guide to show us around, it was Iain himself who gave us the tour! The dunnage warehouse tasting with him was amazing as well. 5 different (young, old, wine, sherry, peated etc.) drams straight from the cask! I've only just watched this video, but Iain is still the same passionate and enthusiastic gentleman. He has a beard and more hair now, so I almost didn't recognize him. I walked out with the same smile you guys had! Absolute highlight of my trip! Thanks for sharing and giving my the best tasting experience as well.

This was awesome to watch. Start to finish, just awesome. This video should be called the joy of whisky. I don’t think many people can say they had a super intimate, basically one-on-one tasting w/ a distillery manager/master distiller sampling hand-picked single casks covering everything from 6yo to 30yo, red wine, port, sherry, & ex-bourbon...unpeated to heavily peated. Really amazing! I got to try most of the same whiskies (but there were 40+ people at the tasting & I only got in a short convo w/ Iain after). I agree that the ex-bourbon matured were by far my favorite...which is usually the opposite for me. I think I just really love the “glen scotia DNA” that sings through when, like you noticed, it’s not messed with. Roseanne and Iain are really incredibly friendly & generous people. I went by the distillery for a different tasting this morning & mentioned to them both that they’re RU-vid stars now. 😄 They got a kick out of that. Thanks for an amazing video! 🥃😄

Thanks for the tour, looking at the walls perhaps it had upper wood floors in the past? Curious about the two different ways the casks are stacked now that I have seen quite a few videos showing this. Looks like keeping them vertical and using palates to stack them is easy and cost effective as opposed to horizontal. Did any one on a tour have anything to say either way on this topic? Cheers

@WhiskyMystery 4 года назад
Hi DB. Looking at the website they may have changed the tour options since we were there. We didn’t tour of the distillery so the closest thing would be the dunnage tour I guess. We paid I think 50 pounds for this one.
@DB-eu6sr
@DB-eu6sr 4 года назад
@@WhiskyMystery 50 pounds is bit expensive for distillery tasting. You got a good value out of it considering lain spent quite a bit of time hosting and answering questions. I think Lagavulan warehouse tasting is be best in terms of verity and value. I was lucky to taste 51yo in addition to 8yo, 12yo, 16yo, 20yo, 34yo straight outta casks during Lagavulan warehouse tasting 2 year ago.

@@DB-eu6sr I think it depends on the business. Our Lagavulin tasting had about 40 people in it and four slightly rushed drams. Still enjoyable, but the Glen Scotia was well worth it. The drams at a bar would total close to $200 I would guess.

Thank you for uploading. You sold it for me and so many Ex-Bourbon examples to choose from. I think I'll do this tasting session with my father. I can see from your descriptions that these are just the styles of malts I really like and straight from the barrel! Wow! I do hope they offer us the heavily peated one. I think I'd love this. Seeing as I think I would absolutely love these samples, I really have the urge to ask Iain McAlister a really "chutzpa-dick" (rude/cheeky/disrespectful) question. Do I dare? My question would be, I can see the immense pride that you take in the natural integrity of your whiskies, why then do I feel that all your standard releases are far too contrived and over manipulated? They all state they are Non Chill-Filtered and bottled at 46% abv that is to be commended. But take the 15 Year Old for instance. Just look at that obviously artificial florescent chemical orange tinge to it which looks like they've added a few cans of Irn Bru to the bottle. Glen Scotia are in my opinion, by far the worst examples I can think of, of E150a Caramel colouring abuse! It doesn't even look like the standard Johnnie Walker "Whisky" golden brown caramel look. It is bright orange highlighter-pen orange. Besides the colour, and despite a lot of rave reviews, I personally find the standard releases far too sweet and generic. Is it orders from the parent company? Great whisky from barrel. While is that not being translated into the bottles? The truth is, had I not seen your video, I may not have even visited Glen Scotia on my visit to Campbeltown. Thanks for changing my mind about the distillery.
@WhiskyMystery
@WhiskyMystery 4 года назад
Very good points Reb. I am sure Iain is up for a discussion and it would be interesting to bring some standard bottle samples into the warehouse tasting to compare. I think for us whisky geeks all of your points are valid but maybe not for the general consumer. I have two Glen Scotia bottles here. The standard 15 year is much darker than the 19 year Single cask from the distillery and yes more orange. I presume the 15 has some sherry in the mix but not sure,

Yes I know Ralfy did. I couldn't believe it. I was even more surprised than his positive review of the awful Glenlivet 18. If you look down in the comments you will see that I talk about this. You are correct about the Ex-Sherry casks. The standard 15 YO has around 20% Ex-Sherry vatting. Interestingly, Loch Lomond produces a special kosher version of the 15 YO for sale in Israel and the US, which is a vatting of 100% Ex-Bourbon casks. What's interesting? I brought a bottle to England and I gave some to some Non-Jewish friends for comparison. Whoever maintains that they don't add E150a colouring, I can prove that they do! The colour of the kosher and standard versions were EXACTLY THE SAME !!!! Moreover, there wasn't much difference in taste which is what they were trying to achieve anyway. The kosher one was as close to the original as they could do. This is not, in my opinion, a good thing. The same sickly sweet boring generic taste. I am not sure if you aware of whisky reviewer called Rob who ahs a channel called The Spirit Safe. I find his tasting notes are always 100% spot on (at least in sync with mine....ha ha). He uses a laptop webcam and mic but its the contents, not the production which is so good. He only has a small following. Worth checking out. Also, my kosher whisky blog is "Reb Mordechai Reviews" although to my shame, I have not posted for a while even though I have a back log of review whiskies to review that remain in note form only. Most of my whisky time has been spent recently giving presentations and updating my Kosher Whisky List, (also found on my site) which is a PDF file which you can download for free. Why would this be of interest to the likes of you? Because I list the releases which are 100% free of any Ex-Sherry cask maturation. This can be useful to calibrate your whisky tasting skills.
