From a young age, Thomas J Price was acutely aware of the absence of people that looked like him among the sculptures in the V&A. It's a collection that has informed his practice and with which his work is in dialogue in this display at the museum.
In this film, Price discusses how his work raises questions of representation, perception and power, prompting us to think about the nature of monuments: who is represented and why? His sculptures occupy space, but, just as importantly, they 'make' space - space for discussion, for inclusion, and for what he calls "experiences in radical empathy". Combining a love for material with an acute observation of the language of sculpture, Price challenges established, exclusionary, social constructs to create a greater sense of connection, self-worth and shared experience.
Thomas J Price at the V&A is on until 27 May 2024.

i saw this show last week....it was really arresting...especially the smallest piece, the man with the cell phone. we are so used to seeing idealized bodies now, especially in advertising and entertainment. his naked body, very different than what we consider a "good body" really got me thinking...especially now being older. he is right that it draws you in but then you look away because its hard facing the realities of an aging body, facing the world vulnerable.

I enjoyed hearing what he has to say. He’s a marvelous young man. His art is gorgeous!

The explanations were perfect for providing a broader context (without explaining each invidual work). Very well communicated.

Moments Contained is bought by the town of Rotterdam, Holland. It is exactly in the right place, this city with all the different ethnicities, governed by a Maroccan born Mayor, the ‘working’ character of the city as an opposite to Amsterdam. And then this huge girl, finding her place just right there. Helping us all to see that the world is much more beautiful when we all blend, mingle, in love and respect.

Happy I got a chance to visit this exhibit. I like how the sculptures are intermingled with the other pieces in the museum instead of in a separate area

Imagine Foggini having to ramble on so along about his work.

How do you know he didn’t express himself thoroughly?

The artist needs so many words to explain essentially simple things. His work is very impressive though :)

Most artists have an impulse and act on it and for some reason have to justify it. Maybe they shouldn’t. It’s okay to have a plan and realize it, or admit it was just an impulse. I think it’s too much assumption to make a generic figure and tell people to see themselves in it. It lacks empathy. He doesn’t really know how white, or probably any, women experience the idealized female figure or the rules or femininity. Anyway, good luck avoiding rules. On the whole, I do like his work as seen here. It’s hard not to enjoy a good statue. I wonder what his opinion of Unity is?

Politicised art. So tiring. The world needs beauty. Hopefully the pendulum will turn soon, away from this.

Is this what year 2023 AD has to offer history and humanity. Centuries of timeless master craftsmanship in the collection of V&A, all striving for beauty and achievement, and now this.

So good. I love hearing him talk about the work but i feel like none of the artists he is showing with have to talk their work into validity. You know what i mean? It’s just a random thought really.
