It's pretty clear that Phronesis is going in another direction than amanuensis, but i can't complain. I'm more than thankful and super excited what more MIII have to bring.
I mean think about how different the amanuemsis is from gnosis. The fact that this is so different isn't surprising. Plus, this is after four years. Things change
People here seem to have lost the capacity of simply enjoying music. The huge amount of auto declared professional criticizers was probably the main reason why I stopped listening to metal through the years, but Monuments still bringing me back. There's some kind of wonderfulness about their sound that calls me even though years have passed. It makes me feel calm. Keep up the good work, guys!
Never listen to critics. They give 2,5/5 to Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder album in its time. Now it's a timeless classic I always return back to. I recently explored Monuments and they are amazing.
WTF, you stopped listening to metal because you felt compelled to scroll to the comments section and read them all and amongst them you found negative comments? Just WTF. This can't be real, this must be an AI generated BS comment for a research project.
Yeah I'm really interested to hear where the album is going, but I know it's going to be great. There are still SOOO many sick riffs from the studio session clips we're yet to hear. It's funny, because you're right - this album definitely is different, but it sounds like you're keeping an open mind which is awesome (and also rare - usually people think "different" automatically equals "bad"). And the songs grow on you too. On the first listen I was like :) now on the fourth listen I'm like :D
Ashton Fitness exactly what i think! just wrote a similar comment.. The album just has to be good from what we have already seen in the studio updates! Sounds definately different but the riffs are on point as always!
This gives me the Garden of Sankhara vibes! Don't know what these "djentbois" and "groove critics" are talking about. No sense in comparing Amanuensis' lyrics to Phronesis' because M2 is heavily a concept album and M3 seems not and theres nothing wrong about it
This genre of metal typically gets an unsavory response from fans when trying songs of this style...but this song is one HELL of an exception! This is mind blowing catchy...And epic to top it off...I love it
You can hear Olly's influence in this new album, seems that Monuments it's no longer Browne's 'solo' project (it's Flux Conduct). This song and A.W.O.L seems to be wirtten by Olly with some Browne touches. However, Leviathan keeps that old Monuments style maybe because it was written mainly by Browne. It's only a guess... It's good though
Actually completely off! This was written mainly by myself with Olly Touches, Leviathan was written Together by us both right down the middle. A.W.O.L was Olly with some me bits. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the insight on your creative process Mr. Browne, I actually tough the same way as Daniel. But this tells the tale of 2 very talented composers feeding of each other and vastly incorporating each others musical outlooks into their own writing. This is probably the biggest selling point for me now, as I wait anxiously for MIII. Cheers!
Ah, there it is, what i was looking for. I agree, the tracks are very well produced with popping drums, slick bass and clear vocals, but the guitars are the ones slightly hiding in the mix. Like you can hear them but they're not as present as previous albums. Now I can adapt, Thanks and cheers!
RIGHT?! like come fucking on if I try hard enough I can hear that this shit is brilliant, it just takes way too much effort from the listener, give the guitars more air dammit
at 1:28 you can hear the tone and slap, then at 1:48 the mix sounds great until Chris comes back, i think it was a choice for voice clarity rather than presence.
So far the album is great. So glad I found this band. I love the diversity of sounds. You've got the scream and the singing, the kickass riffs. It's rlly good
The more I listen to the, the more i like it. You have to get used to the vocals on this one, but the riffs are so good. How can you dislike 1:48? So stoked to hear the full album!
I really wasn't very impressed when I first heard this song, but now that I've listened to the album a lot more, it's become one of my favorites on Phronesis. Sometimes simpler is better
Damn, I love the snare placements on that list riff. Starts off with a generic backbeat, and then sort of branches off and does something more counterintuitive, but it works perfectly.
Hmmmm ... the last one didn't click until I saw Browne's playthrough vid. Maybe that will be the case with this one. Although the last riff is utterly mesmerizing.
A lot of complaining in the comments, I suppose that's metal communities for you; too much of the same, people complain, change something, people complain. I'm just happy to hear more music really.
You know what? I'm really down with this. This and Leviathan have me hyped for the album. Is it Amanuensis II? No. And that's a good thing. You can't top that album, but you can still create good shit anyway!
damn, i never thought i would get bored listening to monuments. 2 new songs in a row and absolutely nothing sticks out in either track. Its not horrible...i just expected so much more from these guys after amanuensis
1:55 “if it was there, now it’s dead to me.” Why does this line feel so badass? I wanna say this to the b**** that broke my heart if she tries to come back to my life
So far, I don't really enjoy the lyrical content on the songs that have come out. The musicianship is fucking crushing, as always. Chris' singing has definitely come a long way but it feels like the lyrics were almost phoned in.
I don’t think it was that phoned in actually. Maybe on Stygian blue it was, but this album has very different topics. Songs from the Amanuensis mainly consists of “god complex” type of lyrics and stuff that talks about a cycle of creation and destruction. Interesting stuff. While phronesis is mainly about more relatable things in life. I think it’s no coincidence that Chris left the band after phronesis, if you read the lyrics in Stygian blue, minus how generic the lyrics are, that song was meant to be targeted to someone, Chris was definitely going through personal shit during the making of phronesis and it shows through the lyrics.
My vision of the music video for this: A cheesy performance in a smokey bar, all suited up, cheeky winks to the audience (all from Olly). Something like it's out of the 50s/60s
DarkPkLaw I wish they would try getting there music professionally mixed. I don't think any of the albums have had great production but this one seems the worst so far.
Its a pretty even mix i think thats why people dont like it.The guitars are more in the background but they still sound audible so not really a big deal.
I don't know if for anyone else here it happens the same way, but the first listen I gave to any on the new singles, at first, I'm always like: "meh, the previous single was better". and a couple moments later, I catch myself listening to the new song a million times on repeat. The Amanuensis is a masterpiece, the best album of the genre in my opinion, but I'm really excited and expecting Phronesis to take Amanuensis place on the top of my albums list, that's just how great these guys are! And as a brazilian, I couldn't leave without our trademark comment: pls come to Brazil! Hahahaha
I really dig this album for what it is. If you keep comparing this to MII you're gonna have a bad time. The songs that really stuck to me are this one, Celeste, Jukai, & Stygian Blue. I do agree about most people's complaints with the vocals/lyrics: not enough power and the lyrics seem kind of...juvenile. It sounds like Chris is using more of his head/falsetto voice on this record. I know I'm contradicting what I just said but if you compare, for example, Stygian Blue to Atlas you can hear the power lacking in his CLEAN singing. The screaming vox sound great to me. And I cannot say anything bad about the songwriting. I can appreciate the integration of the "poppy" sounding riffs, but you can't deny this shit still has that bounce that made us love Monuments in the first place. My opinion ultimately doesn't matter because as long as the boys in M are happy with it that's what matters; just thought I'd give my two cents on it. I've been playing this every day since it dropped and I dig the fuck out of it. Keep on bouncin' my dudes.
I just found out there was a new monuments album yesterday and today final fantasy 8 remastered came out and for some odd reason this song reminds me of squalls emotional journey and I absolutely love! Twas meant to be
If _The Amanuensis_ is like _Altered State_ (my favorite albums, both sophomore releases), then _Phronesis_ is like _Polaris_ - a venture forward, but in different territory than what came before. It’s unusual, but it tells its own story, and because of that, I love it anyway 😄
Anyone has the impression that the vocals are a little overproduced? I think on Amanuensis it was more raw and I liked that better. Chris is a beast but these overproduced tracks don't give him justice imo.
I think I get what you mean, the effects are neat, but it can seem like it takes away from the "genuine" kind of feel that his earlier vocals had But you are right, Chris fucking rocks
Agreed, both the screams and cleans are too poppy and emotionless for my liking. Like the music still though, hopefully the other songs' vocals sound more legit
I think it might be better live. I get what people mean about the over-compressed sound. But bear in mind we're listening on youtube, where everything is super compressed because internet delivery!
yeah bro. mixing wise, amanuensis is lack of spikes and sounds so organic which is very nice and have its unique value. No hate tho but amanuensis sounds more inspiring for me
Agreed. Lyrics were never the strong suit for Monuments but it feels like he's just thrown these together without much inspiration. Saying that though I'm digging the hell out of these new tracks!
