I was introduced to both the Beatles "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" and the Moody Blues "Days of Future Passed," at the same time in the early 1990s. Both blew my mind, but I found out that going down the rabbithole of the Moody Blues catalog, is a very rewarding experience.

In Search Of The Lost Chord, To Our Children's Children's Children & On The Threshold Of A Dream are the albums to get IMO. I'm surprised you aren't a big fan. They were great in the 70's. Very underrated.

Love Days Of Future Passed. It's one of the LPs that signaled the coming of Prog Rock. I recently found a 1967 or 68 British pressing of the album.

I'm a big Moody Blues fan and I've always enjoyed Days Of Future Passed. I didn't hear the original mix until it was reissued in 2017. I enjoy the original mix much better than the 70s remix. I was unaware that there were two mixes until shortly before the original mix was reissued. I've always enjoyed the album but when I heard the original version, it really came to life for me. If you're wanting to get into more Moody Blues, I highly recommend the six albums that follow Days Of Future Passed. It's some great stuff.

I first got the "Days Of Future Passed" album in 1986. And being a male teenager, I was really put off by the orchestral sections. Though, I did really like a lot of the songs. I grew to like it more later. It eventually became my favorite Moody Blues album. I have a deluxe 2 CD set with many bonus tracks. Including single-only songs, BBC recordings and some of those original mixes. I actually like the 1978 mix more. But, I grew up with that one. I got a DVD of a complete performance of the album from 2017, at the Sony Centre in Toronto. And wouldn't you know it, 30+ years later, I was mostly enthralled with the orchestral parts of the album on that concert. A full circle moment. 😊 If you like "Days Of Future Passed", I would recommend their next six albums after that, plus their 1981 album, "Long Distance Voyager". A great album to get on LP, is the 2 LP compilation, "This Is The Moody Blues".

The orchestral sections really fired off my imagination. I was imagining scenarios which I could score with those. It's a fun album overall with everything there is on it. I'm very visually minded, so I hear one of those sections and imagine what it all must look like.

I always enjoy these kind of videos. I don’t have the kind of money to go out and buy these albums on different kinds of formats. However, I did review DOFP on my Facebook page. I recommended people listen to “side 1” during a sunrise and listen to “side 2” during a sunset. I listened to both myself under similar circumstances and it helped me appreciate the album more!

There are noticable differences in the original LP mix and later CD mix on specific songs. In the original mix of Time to Get Away, the line "Live all you people" is sung by whole band. But on CD, only John Lodge's falsetto voice is heard. Elsewhere, a flute riff or orchestra riff is played an extra time on one version.

I have to agree with you, TJ. I got this album back in January off the strength of “Nights In White Satin” and its classic status. On my first listen, I thought it was merely okay. I haven’t revisited it yet, but I expect that it’ll also grow on me. I’ve only heard the ‘70s remix, so I’m not sure in what ways it differs from the original mix. Curious to see if I like it more on a second listen, or if I need to go back to the original 1967 mix to really appreciate it

I own the 50th Anniversary of this album which contains the original 1967 mix along with the 5.1 on the DVD. The 1972 stereo mix was also included which I believe does sound better IMHO. Hope a Dolby Atmos mix becomes a thing in the future. The Core 7 albums are amazing and I highly recommend listening to In Search of the Lost Chord, To Our Children's Children's Children and A Question of Balance especially!

Very timely video TJ. I've been listening a lot to the Moody Blues in recent weeks and have multiple versions of their classic seven albums on SACD and CD. Always looking for the best sounding version.....

I'm a fan of this album & I have had 3 LP copies. The 1st I bought in 1974 & don't know its issue date. I have heard that there was a different mix that was missing an element (backing strings I think). I enjoy the '60's feel of the orchestral sections (like the instruments imitating the sound of city traffic in "Peak Hour") & the Moodies' exploration of ethnic music (the Indian percussion in the "Evening" section). The only version I listen to now is the SACD from 2006 that has the 4 channel mix (1972) on its SACD layer. That mix is lush & wonderful! The stereo CD layer supposedly has the original mix. I'd say my next favorite by the Moodies is *Seventh Sojourn.*

I feel digital does not have any imperfections. Whilst on vinyl it’s the imperfections that raises it to a higher level.

It would be interesting to see a comparison which included the SACD, and the MOFI CD. If you had a SACD that actually could play back the DSD layer.

@@farrellmcnulty909 There are quite a few SACD players around, but most seem to be stereo only. SACD albums are only a trickle. That's too bad because I bought some quad SACDs from Vocation (The Guess Who, Deodato, & Michael Tilson Thomas) that sound great. I think Panasonic still make a multichannel player.

I've had a life long love affair with this album. I purchased my first copy in 1972. It's one of the few albums I enjoy as much today as I did as a child. IMHO, the best digital versions are the original Deram CD release, MFSL CD & the 5.1 SACD.

I do prefer the CD remasters and the SACD version better than the vinyl for pretty much the reasons TJR has espoused. But, I would challenge TJR to take some time to dig deeper into their subsequent 6 albums which I also love, many of which I prefer over Days Of Future Passed. 🥰

Is the remix/remaster from the session tapes that were hopefully better-preserved than the 1967 master?

First pressing of ziggy sounds different to all cds ive heard, its the vibe, hard to explain. Beatles Abbey Road remix also loses a vibe... all in the mastering...

I am a huge Moody Blues fan and DOFP is not even their best album in my opinion... I like their other latest 60s albums and early 70s albums better. In my mind To Our Childrens Childrens Children is their masterpiece.

Hi TJR.... It Depends on what mix you get... The UK 67 mix is excellent... the 78 mix is awful. The 50th anniversary which was cut from a 1st generation safety cassette tape of all things not an LP, of the 67 mix is likely the worst sounding in my collection. The Speakers corner is a great sounding record, only issue is it's the 78 mix, which is not good. I have all these pressings, and to date the original UK 67 stereo is hands down the best.. i can't comment on the Mono mix, I haven't heard it. You really need to get an OG 67 pressing, or a repress from the early 70's to fully appreciate the album. Any of the current so called "remasters" use very poor quality sources of the original mix.... The 2017 remaster is utter sh*t.. Sorry 🙂 But |I have to be honest.
