1968 I existed in a frightening world, worried about possibility of shipping to Vietnam, away at boot camp. Sad, lonely, homesick. Big fan of the Moodies. Who didn't have a copy of the album "Days of Future Past" back in the day? Justin is so humble & I think even a bit shy. It's as almost he prefers to go unnoticed throughout life but watch out when he straps on that guitar & has a live mike in front of him - watch out!! Justin truly is one of the most gifted songwriters & singers ever. Have had the pleasure of seeing the Moodies several times and for their 50th anniversary. Plus I have seen Justin's solo show many times. His voice is fabulous & it's a real pleasure to be at any one of his shows. Justin is a true artist in every sense of the word. Thank you for this interview! 🎸

I fell in love with the Moodys when my friend's dad took we two 9 year old kids to breakfast. I was so entranced by what I was hearing that I didn't want to break and ask what it was. He obviously loved that I did 'cause he went right to an 'oh, there's more... MUCH more' vibe :) Such a nice dude, who died of a heart attack in his early 40s. What I hope Justin understands is the true magnitude of what he himself has contributed to such a deep, deep impact on so many. Not only by association to a great time in life, but mostly by what and how he and they did. Just a favorite human of mine, that is.

What an extraordinary human being! He’s such a Wonderful Soul…I met Justin and the rest backstage at the Greek Theatre in 1984…They were all so nice and Graeme was hilarious! Mike had already left the group of course. Patrick was on keyboards at the time. I was able to get backstage twice. As far as seeing him in public. The Moodies were playing here in Eugene, Oregon and I was stopped at a red light, and Justin was on the corner waiting for the light to change to walk across the street to the Hyatt…I put my head out the window and greeted him by name waving, he turned his head and smiled. I Love the Nights Tour and I think it’s a perfect way for him to keep pleasing all of us who love his songs! The musicians he has surrounded himself with are wonderfully talented. Karmen on Flute is a Perfect match! Thank you for this interview! Great job!!! 👏👏👏

The same goes here. I was 17 at the time back in 69-1970. I had never bought the Moodies records back then, as I was a huge Clapton fan as well as Hendrix and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. But when I heard "Nights," I fell in love with the song, as did my sister of 18. We had no idea what he looked like because the Moodies decided to keep their pictures off the albums. So all we heard and loved was that haunting voice singing such a sad song. Some people thought "oh what a love song." But I saw it differently of such a sad song, of people walking around holding hands and are oblivious to his suffering. He never saw the beauty of life until she appeared. Funny thing. Neither did my husband. I turned him on in the beauty of the clouds, the beauty of leafless trees with their formation, etc. Anyway, my sister and I fell in love with that haunting voice singing with such sorrow. Then we heard his name, Justin. We thought someone with such a name just has to be good looking! Ah to be young. And then we saw him and the band. Yes! Years later, when Justin was putting CDs on his own, he talked about Nights and stated that he had never mentioned before but there can be sorrow in a song. He said people see Nights as a romantic song, but he never discussed the other side of love and that is when someone gets their heart broken. He stated that his heart had been broken several times and it was when he write this song, his gal had broken up with him and it was tough. During that time, he met a gal and they had a fling, but when she left, she gave him white, Satin sheets and the story goes on from there. He had been playing around with the words of the song, when they needed another song, he introduced to them what he wrote and it goes from there. I have heard Nights in movies as well as part of it. I have seen Justin when he tours on his own and comes to Annapolis, Maryland with his little band. Anyway, I read your comment and could relate.

The first moody blues song I ever heard was story in your eyes. I remember the exact moment, 15 years old, at a friends house after school. They didn’t say the name of the song or artist on the radio so I immediately called the radio station to find out who they were. Then I went out and bought all of their albums. Their music has been a big part of my life, my family are all very familiar with their work because I played their music all the time and also brought family with me to the concerts. Going to Moody blues concerts with the family has been another fun gift from the Moodys. I have lost track of how many times I’ve seen them in concert, it’s over 30. I saw Justin, along with my family, in Clearwater Florida five years ago. The first time I saw the moody blues was when I was 17. They came to my hometown Madison Wisconsin and there was really only one hotel that the bands stayed at back in those days. I kept calling the hotel until I got someone on the phone that would tell me the day and time they were due to arrive. It was 1 AM the day before the concert. I convinced my best friend Mary to go with me. We were waiting in the hotel lobby when the band walked in. They invited us up to their rooms to drink champagne. I mainly spoke with Justin about his songs, such a cool dude. I knew he was married and I respected that, no groupie extracurricular activities, although a couple of the other guys tried, I won’t mention names. After the incredible concert (I cried) we were in a big mob outside the backstage area. I saw one of the managers that I had met the night before and said remember us, Mary and Mary? Can we come back stage? The guy checked with the band and let us come in. The rest of the crowd was so mad. We got autographs and one last wonderful conversation with Justin before we bowed out to let them go eat and relax in peace. I am 63 years old now and those memories from those two days back in 1978 are still two of the highlights of my life. Love love love Justin Hayward and the Moody Blues.💞

I had a difficult upbringing with alcoholic parents. I really leaned into music heavily to survive. It still amazes me how a complete stranger can pull my heartstrings. I bought my stereo and my LPs, looking back I had most of their albums, I dont know how I afforded anything but I bought music often. Now I just pray for all the minstrels that have impacted me and that is a meaningful practice because in a strange way I have a love for them. Justin seems like a he has a keen sense of humor. What a great interview! Thank you. Like so many others, music helped me survive, kept my head above water. There are/were so many great bands, great songs. But great songs are different than the sound track of our lives. I hear a great song from the past and I instantly enjoy it again. But if I hear that sound track, my soul is touch; my life is affected, again. The Moodies have been the sound track of my life, their music illuminates the story in my eyes. Justin is one of the most important musicians in my life. I really appreciate seeing this interview with him. I must say as a fan I agree that the music is primary, but for me, he is the one that brought it to us it didn't come out of thin air. Its like the Beatles were always stumped by the adulation, but my god, it is the power of the music that makes us idolize these people. It is very valuable to me to know about musicians and their lives- just like listening here, otherwise, why bother just listen to the music. Justin is a beautiful man who has brought wonderful music into our lives. I am eternally grateful 🙏. In the end it's just a song. Thanks to both of you. Cheers indeed. 🕉

At about the 10:00 minute mark here on your video timeline, Justin goes into some background on the release of the single, "NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN" verses "TUESDAY AFTERNOON", he is SO correct, the actual USA 45RPM single of "NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN" with it's natural crescendo ending (without "Late Lament") wasn't released until 1972 and made it all the way to #2 on Billboard Magazine, then I believe it was released again as a single in 1978 with a hasty fade-out, just before "Late Lament" was coming up around the corner! It seems that there were a few more different edits of the single with different timings, perhaps released in other countries, but the MAIN two "DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED" album versions remain the true classic staples, which contain "NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN"; the 1967 ORIGINAL MIX version starting with the short orchestrated prelude & the 1978 UPDATED REMIX version (created due to deterioration of the 1967 original mix master tape) BOTH with the short orchestrated prelude at the head and "Late Lament" & the infamous GONG at the end. The odd thing is, the ORIGINAL 1967 MIX of "NIGHTS..." has a full 12 bars of orchestral timing, before Haywood's first chord strike of his acoustic guitar & Lodge's first thump of his bass. The later REMIX of "NIGHTS..." only has 11 bars! That's obvious, because Peter Knight's London Festival Orchestra was recorded and later "dubbed-in" during BOTH final post-production mix downs, by producer Tony Clarke & certain minute changes & subtleties appear in the REMIX version. Well there's my short history lesson on "NIGHTS IN WHITE SATIN" for you, direct from my depleting memory! (I probably left out a fact or two...) Perhaps Justin, John and possibly Michael can correct me on such! I SURELY would be open to that!!! BolsaChicaRadio

Nice interview. Justin is too modest. Shame he gave all his stuff away some to the UK fan club. Look at his and the Moodies’ catalog. It’s impressive. They were fortunate no one knew what they looked like or they’d be mobbed like the Beatles were. I’m a longtime collector of their music and memorabilia worldwide and have met Justin several times. Working on writing a price guide. Been on all the cruises 2013+. Next one April2024 and going gold this time (search OnTheBlue). He doesn’t wander the ship to meet fans but John Lodge did. There’s lots of other famous bands he invited and it’s a blast rubbing elbows in the buffet lines. Now John and Justin just do solo shows. Wish they had done a BlueJays tour performing that album. I don’t think it’s bad blood but they have different goals now. RIP Ray Thomas and Graeme Edge. 🥰🇬🇧🇺🇸🎸🎶❤️ (Minnetonka Minnesota)

Be sure to catch John Lodges show....It's a great night! Saw him twice solo. Perhaps he will do an interview? 🎸

I love his humility. I agree with his thoughts on what folks are interested in. The intricacies of their lives do not really interest me as much as the creations they make. Thanks Justin.

I owned the 7 core albums after acquiring them while I was in the Navy. The Moody Blues were rather popular on my first ship. After I got back to the states, I went to a record store and they happened to have all 7 in stock. I was burglarized in the early 80s and my entire record collection was stolen, including the Moody Blues.

Great guy, great songwriter. I had a couple hundred albums in my collection by the time I was 20 (65 now), but I only truly connected with two groups: The Moody Blues and Led Zeppelin.

Hey Justin, We understand you don't want to be in a tribute band. But how about you, John and Mike get together for one more Moodie Blues album? You guys produced some really profound music as young men, imaging what you could do with lifetimes of LIFE under your belts? Surely you could inspire each other to create some more wonderful music to show the Candle of Life Still Burns Bright!

Not gonna happen, Justin has said he has no desire to do that, and Mike is in poor health. He's quite happy doing his solo tours.

Justin is such a sweet, unassuming man who doesn't dwell on his importance as a musician. Interesting that he doesn't see himself as a celebrity and that he believes most people wouldn't know who he is in a public context. I think I would but I love him, his songs, and The Moody Blues. And I agree, it can't be The Moody Blues with just him and John. He addressed that question actually in the 70s when Blue Jays came out by saying it would be seen as a version of The Moody Blues.

The Moody Blues are my favorite band and I have most of their albums. Their music is unique! Saw them in concert about 10 years ago and of course they were fantastic!

This undoubtedly has been shared before somewhere by one of my moody friends. I only happened on it because I sawr Forever Autumn and Dreadlock Holiday mentioned in the same video and wanted to go find the story about the second one again. Nice and different interview.

Were you told not to ask Justin about him and John? I would love to see the two of them back together. Mike's pretty old, but get him back and do one last small tour. The last time I saw the Moodies, I didn't know it was going to be the last time.

If I say him I'd be fan attic. Lol I've always loved his writing and his musicianship, songs and as a lead guitarist! He is modest. And i love that about him too. Moody's are as big as the Beatles to me.

A lovely man indeed and then there's the plethora of unique and beautiful songs he gave all of us. Like the Beatles, I am very grateful to have been alive at the same time as Justin. (and the Moodies). Got to meet him briefly in Vancouver after a Moodies show. What an honour!!

I was 13 in 1970 so the Moody Blues music has formed my consciousness in a big way (!) Spirituality, music , LSD and marijuana- it was all happening at once. And I was there! Thank you Justin. 🕉
