Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater's sorcerer of synthesis, demos the Moogerfooger MF-101 Lowpass Filter. Check out some of the cool things it can do with your bass lines and drum grooves - it's also sweet in tandem with other Moogerfoogers.

Hi bigblubox, Dr. Robert Moog, who invented these cool toys, pronounced his name that way (rhymes with "vogue"). So it seems natural to pronounce his inventions the same way you'd pronounce his name. But Bob was all about experimentation with sound, so feel free to come up with any pronunciation you like. The products will still work great regardless :-)

Hi SynthBabe, The answer is "Yeah, kinda'" The main issues are: The VAST LowPass Filter can't self oscillate quite the same way as an analog filter. The VAST Filters can't be overdriven in a musically pleasing way like analog. The VAST LFOs start to alias at speeds faster than 8Hz. While I love everything that Kurzweils can do, there are still a number of things that analog can do better (so far). Try it yourself: Triangle LFO -> LP Filter with Resonance. Sweep Filter downward.

love this filter so much i just added a second one in white to my setup. shoppers be smart about your needs/budget when grabbing different moogerfooger models and remember that slim phattys process external audio and run you about 600 used

What you're desribing is LFO oscillation of the cutoff. Yup you could do that if your phaser was the m103, and/or had cv out for the LFO. Or, if you have another LFO out (cp251, m102 both also have lfo outs)

True! Not a workday goes by that I'm not grateful to work at Sweetwater. A building full of really sharp people who dig the same things you do is a great place to work. That, and being surrounded by "toys", being visited and trained by the experts who make the toys, and meeting and helping lots of famous people who play the toys is kinda' like living at the North Pole ;-) But the weather is a lot nicer in the Spring, Summer, and Fall.

@DiederikYBaan Sure, but try modulating a digital filter with an LFO going at audio speeds. Or make it snap open and shut within a few milliseconds. Then you'll hear the difference.

You can modulate it in other ways, but to do it that way you need an envelope generator of some sort. You could use a second 101 if you had one, or anything that has a cv out for an envelope generator (analog synth, etc.)

I see 5 moogerfoogers, from left to right, lowpass filter, freqbox, X, ring modulator, and Y. You keep tweeking X throughout the video, but don't mention which one it is. Was it needed to make the Frankenstein sound, or just the other three?

x=m104z delay and you don't *need* it to generate the tone, but it won't sound the same without a little delay on it. Analog delay tends to make anything moog sound moogier (and most anything else out there sound "better"). Also, believe Y=murf but he's not using it.

i have been looking for something like this, a type of resonant filter to do exactly what you messing with the filter and resonance knobs. I know that with an expression pedal i can control the sweep or do the knob-messing with my foot. If i fed a phaser into the cv inputs, could the sweep of the phaser drive the sweep at a steady rate as if i was rocking back and forth consistently on an expression pedal? @7:04 - could you reiterate what youre doing here to get that sound? The envelope follower CV from the MF-101 into a moog ring modulator (which CV input). And is the audio from the MF-101 going straight into that ring modulator? Thanks in advance.

Great Demo! I play electric guitar for an indie rock electronica band. I really want to buy the MF-101 to give that classic dancey 'opening up' sound to an intro riff to one of our songs. I have found that the best way is to start with resonance full and cutoff at zero, and turn them in opositte directions, how does this sound with the mf-101, and could i control that with 2 expression pedals?

Can you use a y cable to convert back the mf-101 to the mixer effects in? (i know you can't do that the opposite way as you should need to solder a resistor in the cable, right?)

Hi K Q. That's a Low-Pass Filter with its Resonance at 100%, creating a pure Sine wave. The frequency of that Sine wave is being swept via the Filter Cutoff knob, and the sweeping frequency is echoed via the Delay with Feedback. Thanks for watching!

Hey Man How can i connect a moogerfooger delay to a mackie mixer 1640i, i have connected thru aux send return , but the send of the mixer its a TRS cable and the input of moogerfooger it's TS, have then connected with a TS cable , it works but do u think there is an issue with this connection, or can u advice me one better Thanks.

Its always great to have new gear, but couldnt a lot of the effects you produced using the MFs been recreated just using V.A.S.T.? It would have been interesting to hear the difference between Kurzweils simulation of an analog LPF with the MF-101. My guess is some slick programming would make any difference negligible for most

I have a Nord Stage 2... Would it compliment the synth section of the Nord to add this filter? I want to make it sound less digital.

Hi Jit Strike, an analog Moog Ladder Filter is an excellent tool to make any digital instrument sound less so. If I could only have one section of a synth be analog, it would be the filter. Thanks for watching!

Hi Danielle, there are Control Voltage In jacks for Cutoff Frequency, as well as Mix, Resonance, and Amount. So you can connect the out of an external envelope to any of those. The MF-101 also has a built-in Envelope Follower, which creates a Filter Cutoff envelope based on the the amplitude of the incoming audio signal. So... if the sound you're playing into the MF-101 has an Amplitude Envelope, the Filter Cutoff will track that envelope shape. Thanks for watching!

Nice example, but that example with the drums or various other, a digital filter like abletons autofilter will do fine for such fx.

Great vid! I was wondering if this could be used with a dj mixer that only has stereo send return? Like the Rane Empath. This review states it doesn't work with mono fx [no links allowed: google search "rane empath mono send return" top result] Would there be a way to make it work or would it just be too wierd to switch from stereo to mono? Be great if you could advice, i really kind find any other info on the interwebz :)

Is the TRS stereo? meaning can I go dj mixer(send RCA)-MF 101(input TRS stereo output)-(return RCA)dj mixer?

Hi Goce, the MF-101 is Mono In - Mono Out. The two Moogerfoogers that have Stereo Outs are the MF-103 Phaser and the MF-108M Cluster Flux Chorus/Flanger. And both of those are Mono In. Thanks for watching!

Hi Ama Zeus, the MF-101 has a beautiful self-oscillation, and you can certainly use its CUTOFF voltage control jack to control its frequency. Depending on the CV source, you may need a potentiometer in between to dial in accurate tuning for the desired range. Thanks for watching!

Hi Thomas, there are CUTOFF, RESONANCE, AMOUNT, and MIX CV inputs, all of which are stereo 1/4" jacks that accept moogerfooger EP1 (or equivalent) expression pedals, or control voltages from either two-circuit or three-circuit 1/4" jacks. There's also an ENVELOPE CV output jack for sending to other control voltage devices. Thanks for watching!

Hi tasss550. Given that the MF-101 is fully analog, you would basically have to have almost all of the components duplicated to have stereo ins and outs, which would significantly raise the price. Thanks for watching!

I am probably just being ignorant here, and I'm prefectly ready to accept that .... ... but what does all that playing around with sweeping "woosh" have to do with music? It seems more like the fun in this is playing around with gadgets rather than serving a melody or a rhythm.
