This is a very rough and sloppily played tribute to seb17320's excellent "Mos-Lab 15 demo" video. I wanted to see if I could pull-off something close using three Moog Mother-32s. The playing is really rough (due to attempting to play a solo on the little buttons instead of keys) the sequence is not very close to the original, and the video editing in general is crap (I couldn't figure out how to do Seb's 4-way split screen) but I hope everyone can appreciate the spirit that this demo was intended in! I used a touch of Valhalla VintageVerb on each part.
Seb's original video can be found here (I highly recommend watching it) - • MOS-LAB system 15 (cus...

I find it interesting that most of the 'big stuff' in this kind of composition is in the minor key. Far more moody - perhaps because you can jump into major for that special 'uplifting change' then revert to minor for the mood again.

@Genshi
@Genshi 8 лет назад
+A Million Orange Dolphins Thanks! And yes, the very start is just the one Mother-32 with a touch of Valhalla VintageVerb in Ableton Live. When I perform out live, I either have the Mothers running through the effects of my Elektron Octatrack, or through a Strymon blueSky and/or Eventide H9... but in the studio, I get lazy and just use the Valhalla plugin.
@amillionorangedolphins9663
@amillionorangedolphins9663 8 лет назад
Thank you for your answer! Would you say that the Mo32 is designed to actually be used in triplets? Or do you feel it's valuable also as a "stand alone"? Taken module per module it's rather limited compared to corresponding rack-modules. I.e the number of waveforms etc. Taken together however I can se a specific use with two or three units that would need an insane amount of modules If I should have built the same setup in separate euroracks.
@Genshi
@Genshi 8 лет назад
+A Million Orange Dolphins I think many people, for some reason, are put off by the one Oscillator of the Mother-32, but there have been quite a few great, powerful synths with only one Oscillator. And if you look at most of my videos, I use each one as it's on self contained synth. So the Bottom Mother-32 is usually doing Bass duties on it's own, the Middle is doing the Lead part, and the top one is usually doing an interesting sequence pattern. So you can easily get just one Mother-32 and still have a very powerful synth (remember, that patch bay is very usual, even if you don't have other gear to patch with the Mother-32, you can patch one Mother-32 to use both Waveforms of the Oscillator, and other nifty tricks.)
@amillionorangedolphins9663
@amillionorangedolphins9663 8 лет назад
I'm not so worried by the single oscillator (have some "single oscillators" in the studio). I'm more concerned with the limited waveforms and ADSR - if they in the end will feel like limitations compared to the other gear. I had hoped to be able to sell of some euro-modules when/if I buy these. But it would have been nice to have som sinusshapes there. Anyway - thanks for nice demos!

I loved this so fucking much. A lot of questions : 1) So, if you patch one onto the next one... do you have 3 VCOs? 2) Can you have different lengths of sequence? 3) Could you use the three if you did not have a mixer? Thank you. It sounds beautiful. Also, it reminded me somehow of the first five minutes of Drive... and it's years since last I saw that movie.
@Genshi
@Genshi 8 лет назад
Thank you, I appreciate that! 1) Yes exactly, you can basically create a 3 VCO synth this way. 2) Definitely, I have another video (somewhere) that shows this. 3) You can by patching the VCA OUT of one mother-32 into the EXT IN of another, and then that VCA OUT into the EXT IN of the third Mother-32. Thanks again for the kind words (especially the "Drive" comment as Cliff Martinez is one of my favorite composers!)

Damn, that was nice regardless of what you say. This confirms to me that the Mother can make great pad and lead sounds for use with a keyboard and not just blippy sequences. This is the only demo that shows me that this is a better piece than t Roland System 1M. would you agree? Thanks
@Genshi
@Genshi 8 лет назад
+modcraft13 Thanks, I appreciate that! And compared to the Roland 1M? While normally I think all tools are useful, whether they are analog or digital, I actually don't like the Roland System 1m at all. The fact that it's a digital synth, but they limit you so much, for example, voice wise (only 4 voices? It's digital! It can and should have 25 voices!) The Waldorf Blofeld is a much better synth and value for the money over the Roland. It's digital too, but has many more voices, tons of modulation points, can sound very analog, etc. But the Mother-32, which is pure analog, actually sound more vintage analog than even my Moog Sub 37. I would take a Mother-32 over the Roland System 1m any day of the week! Just my own personal taste/opinion.
@viruslived
@viruslived 8 лет назад
Did you run into any problems with your moog 3-tier rack kit? I heard the alignment was off on some.
@Genshi
@Genshi 8 лет назад
+viruslived Nope, no problems. The Rack Kit seems weird at first as you only screw in the top two screws of the Moog and not the bottom; as the rack holes are too big, so the bottom screws on the Mother-32s end-cheeeks just kind of rest on the hole. But once it's all screwed in there, the whole "structure" becomes very stable and rigid. Works surprisingly well.
@viruslived
@viruslived 8 лет назад
+Genshi Media Group That's good to know, thanks. Also, I must say your Mother-32 videos are very good. Quite pleasing to the ears. What interface/pres are you running those beauties through?

@dukeofpearl
@dukeofpearl 8 лет назад
I'm thinking of investing in this three tier system rather than mixing and matching other companies units in a Eurorack. This sounds epic! But is it limiting them all being Moog? I'm new to the Modular game. Thanks. ;)
@Genshi
@Genshi 8 лет назад
Thanks! I don't think it's limiting, but it also depends on what you are wanting to do. I also have two rows of Eurorack for more experimental stuff, but I specifically wanted the three Mother-32s so I can be more musical, and to do that "Berlin School" style. It's like having a big Moog Modular but on a budget!
@greganderson5972
@greganderson5972 7 лет назад
dukeofpearl I'd like to see how this could be done on a Moog modular, or a modeled Moog like the Arturia Modular V. The Mother was my first dip into modular gear and it's fantastic, but I never heard what 3 can do tuned to chords and played like a full keyboard. Great stuff genshi!
@Genshi
@Genshi 7 лет назад
Thank you! There is a little video that shows, in a simple way, how to patch a Moog System 55 modular, unfortunately he doesn't show a detuned chord, but you can see quickly enough how much more easier that would be on a bigger Moog Modular (especially considering the System 55 has 7 Oscillators!) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OYf941en_iI.html

@Genshi
@Genshi 8 лет назад
Just saw the comment... Have you got it working yet? Are you trying to output sound from the rear output of the Mother-32 to your sound interface? Also, make sure you are using a TS cable on the far, NOT a TRS (people get confused with this sometimes.) Even though the jack is made for both, the TRS is for stereo headphones (which is why your headphones work with it) but needs a mono cable if you are going to one channel of your audio interface, thus a TS cable.
@magadan4626
@magadan4626 8 лет назад
Hi. I can not understand - all of this is played live or recorded some parts? 1:20 min. you play your hands, then sequence played itself. And you're playing solo hands, while the sequence continues to play. This sequence which is sampled and then played as a loop? Right?
@Genshi
@Genshi 8 лет назад
Yes, I multitrack/recorded this into Ableton Live. By the time I start with the solo, the first part I had played had then been recorded and playing back. But a lot of it was live since, thanks to the three Mother-32s, I had 3 sequencers to work with... if you look at the original video by Seb (which I link to in the description) his piece is all multitrack.

I was offered a EMS Synthi 100 for free in the 80's. A bitch in admin at the Sydney conservatory of music decided to throw out all the electronic studio because classical music was better. I was told if i could get a van there in 4 hours and had someone to load it up with me I could have it and "other stuff" my friends were all either unemployed musicians or working and not available. I was able to get in touch with someone who promised to tell one of the managers to stop her. they lost alot of stuff, because she sent a load to the dump. She was sacked . And i would dream about what it was like to play one

This is a great thing, but 3 Mothers could buy you a lot of modular stuff, I think one is enough...
@Genshi
@Genshi 8 лет назад
With one, you couldn't pull off what I did here. I wanted 3 Mother-32s specifically to do this kind of stuff in a self-contained system (for way less than a Mos-Lab or Moog Model 15.) But I also have Eurorack modules as a separate system (see my other videos.) They're two different things for different reasons... and yet can all work together. Best of all worlds!
