...no matter what you explain - it is a distinct pleasure to watch your videos. Why ? : permanent index on the left, funny, very deep but also high level, not EGO focussed but TOPIC focussed, well mixed (synths NOT louder than voice !! ), cam, scene management, and lightning : professional. - I am a tutorial addict - and I have not found anything better in youtube so far .... a big Thank You from Germany for your work.

You're right. And I especially agree regarding the "synths not louder than the voice" - as you know that's a VERY common fault of MANY RU-vid audio tutorials and reviews.

@@loopop Actually in a couple of places the sounds *were* louder than the voice - at least on my laptop speakers. But most of it was very good, and I agree with all the other praise for the video format as well. Thank you for sharing this amazing machine with us!

@@loopop Hey great video : but , are the frequencies of the bands fixed or is the interval between each band that is fixed ? . I find that the fixed frequencies like on the Moog MURF are really boring , as you always end up with the same sound , isn't it the same on the Spectravox ?

The frequencies applied to incoming audio are fixed. The Filters applied to the carrier can be moved as one or removed using the faders.

Martin Brown probably because the m32 and dfam are still relatively broad pleasing instruments where as this is even niche within a niche

@@martinbrown6652 id guess it's a perk reserved only for those willing to buy a pricy moogfest "builders workshop" ticket , which gets the individual the chance to build their own moog instrument (which may or may not become publicly available) , the dfam was 1st a moogfest build i've heard, then it became a official release, but the moog subharmonicon (or somthing spelled like that) & a m32 looking moog sequencer wasn't released. 💩💩💩💩

The rapidity with which you get these tutorials up and running is nothing short of remarkable! I have not seen a lot of commentary on this as of yet, but wonder if there is any overlap with the MidiMurf. If this ever is actually released and comes in around the price point of a Mother or DFAM, it would seem like quite the steal given all the features outlined here.

Wow! Apparently the Engineering Workshop was worth the price this year. Moogfest has become more focused on academics and theory, and less focused on performance since moving from Asheville to Durham (earlier Moogfests and Mountain Oasis festivals) a few years ago. That wouldn’t be a bad thing if the technical sessions weren’t so expensive. I stopped paying attention to their increasingly thin promotional materials this year, but had I known they were building this, I might have attended. Excellent walkthrough as usual! Thanks for this video, I hope I can find a Spectravox kit somewhere. Maybe they’ll have them for sale at Moogfest next year.

Can the waveform output of the HOLD function on an analog vocoder like this be used as the continuously running oscillator waveform of an analog synth and played across a keyboard in a volt per octave type fashion instead of just droning? If this is a common feature that I’m just not aware of can you tell me which synths do this? I’m imagining a synth with a structure like a Juno60 but before it will make sound you need to sing into a little microphone and press the hold button for each oscillator.

The hold function freezes the levels of the band pass filters - what produces the actual sound is the oscillators you feed into them, whether from the vocoder or an external source. You can modulate the frequency of the bandpass filters here, which sounds very cool but isn't like pitching an oscillator. I think what you're looking for can be accomplished with a simple sampler across a limited pitch range, and a more complex sampler with formant controls if you want an extended range.

Thank you. This does seem to be the consensus of most forums. But in a less marketable, less efficient, and definitely more romantic sense, is it possible to do this with analog circuitry? Can any continuous signal source replace an analog oscillator circuit?

Technically any digital algorithm can be built with analog circuitry, it’s just a matter of how many circuits you’re willing to throw at the problem. I’ve made a different video about using a sample and hold circuit and switch as ram. Use enough of those and you’re good to go ;)

Very good, but the vocoder sounds are not clear enough. Is it the quality of the microphone? By the way... Do you need a dynamic or a condenser type of microphone for vocoding, do you know?

You need to hit very specific settings to make the vocoder legible and I agree that even then it’s not perfect by any means. IMHO what makes this special is its filter bank as a synth and treating the vocoder as a modulator rather than just for speech

The microphone isn't really that important. In order to get more legible sounds when vocoding voice, really you need more filter bands than this, you would probably be looking at 16 bands instead of the spectravox's 8. However, that gets very expensive very quickly with analog circuitry, which is why there are so few analog vocoders around. Digital allows for more filters for cheaper, so most modern vocoders are digital but much clearer. Hope this helps.

Hi, I use MOscilloscope and MAnalyzer by a company called Melda - they’re free with some limitations in the MFreeFXBundle. Occasionaly I’ll use scopes by VCV

This one. You can build a subharmonicon with dedicated Doepfer modules (the Trautonium modules) which sound just like the original trautonium. But it is a gimmick in my opinion - in terms of practical use this little vocoder strikes me as far more useful.

Loopop, Please help, I have begged moog to sell me one of these, there was only ever one on reverb and it was 4k and it sold in 3 hours. My question is this. A fixed filter bank wont do the same formanty vowely type stuff you can do with this filter bank as a filter bank doesn't have an envelope or a spectral shift knob i would assume??? do you know any modules that can do something similar to this spectravox? like an analog filter bank dynamically controlled? does the 16ch moog vocoder do the same thing that the spectravox does? even though its price tag is 5K I just need to be able to make these sounds in an analog fashion, alternatively can i buy your spectravox? haha jk
