Thanks so much for the great video. It’s perfect for learning the Moogs but I wish I had seen it when I first started because it applies to all synths and the way you guys presented the explanation and then implementation would have saved me years of trying to figure the EG knob out. I really dug the piece that you created. That’s the beauty of these machines. To me they are like a cross between a chemistry set and your favorite pet. Thanks for the pro tip about the 4 tier rack. I had an extra 2 tier after I bought my 3 tier for the trio like you guys presented. I’m going to get an extra empty Moog skiff and put some modular gear up there. Thanks to both of you again for all the education.

This is a great video. I've been using it as a tutorial and playing along with my gear, but I noticed that when I use the Assignable output of the M32, it didn't work. I used the Gate output instead and it did. After I RTFM for the M32, it seems the default Assignable output setting "outputs a 0 to +5v filtered pulse signals from Accented pattern steps only". I had to go into setup mode and change the assignable output to Clock and then everything worked as in the video. Thanks and please do more of the SUBH/DFAM/M32 videos!

@jackduxbury1632

DFAM and Mother are in mono running into Radial Pro DI boxes then a UA Apollo X8. The Subharmonicon comes out mono in the the Empress reverb then that goes in stereo through the DI boxes in to the interface. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching mate
@direhavok8732

@@jackduxbury1632 I'm not familiar with the Radial Pro's, those are just to filter out excessive noise? And I would assume you have 2 ProDI's (1 for DFAM & 1 for Mother) then 1 ProD2 for the Stereo aspect. Hope I got that correct.

@13:50 THANK YOU for the question, and of course the answer. I really was wondering while playing with my unit how really it worked. I'm still a bit confused sometimes as the results I get are not always what I was expecting, but this explanation helped me a lot. Though there's a thing I still don't properly get. My understanding is that attack and decay of the VCF are tweaking the filter (the Cutoff) as if I was tweaking it myself. What I don't get is: from what position does it "turn" the knob, and at what speed ? If my cutoff sits mid from example, and I dial a short decay on the VCF, what does it "make the Cutoff" do if we were to imagine its physical movement? Would it start from the bottom left position and rise (if the EG is set to a positive position), or start from its current position (middle) and rise ? Thank you very much in advance for this info, and all the ones that are contained in this great vid!

@TristanBaldi
@TristanBaldi 2 года назад
@@MrScarabey hi, yes if you have the answer that'd be neat!
@MrScarabey
@MrScarabey 2 года назад
@@TristanBaldi So as we know, the ADSR is a function curve, generally applied to amplitude of sound, aka loudness. If there’s a second ADSR, usually it controls the filter, that’s right. So what it’s doing is copying the behavior of amplitude ADSR, but applying it to filter cutoff knob. It’s easier to explain on DFAM or Mother since they have AR and ASR. For example, you have 0 attack, so the sound starts right away, and then goes slow long decay / release. And on filter we have 0 attack, and fast release. Therefore we will hear long decaying sound with fast filter sweep down (if positive amount EG engaged). Filters sweep is never longer than the main duration of the sound. Filter EG can close filter longer than amp EG would close overall sound with set settings, but it wil still retrigger on the next note. And finally, any filter action normally leads us to the point of positioning of your filter knob. If we take DFAM as a simplest of EG principles, it goes like this. For example, our note is one second note and our filter EG set like this: maximum positive portion on VCF EG amount and some clockwise portion on vcf decay. We will hear one second decaying sound with fraction of a second of a filter sweep going down. So the filter sweep will start from max open filter position and end on your cutoff frequency position. If you open your filter cutoff (turn it fully clockwise), you will hear no filter sweep as it’s nowhere to go for filter EG. If you set Filter decay knob further clockwise, and amp decay short, filter move will not make it in time to the Filter cutoff position point. Phew, that’s all I know about filter sweeps)
@TristanBaldi
@TristanBaldi 2 года назад
@@MrScarabey Thanks a lot for your answer. I am aware of enveloppes and filter enveloppes on a simple ADSR synth, but was confused specifically on the Subharmonicon. The second part of your answer helps in that matter, thanks very much

@medardfischer

I was super skeptical of the DFAM when it was first released. It seemed like a half-baked drum machine with a limited 8-step sequencer and no midi. I’m happy to admit that I was very wrong with that initial impression. After watching more vids (including by Mylar Melodies) I became intrigued by how enthusiastic everyone seemed. Anyway, I bought one last month. I can honestly say it’s the most fun I’ve had with a piece of gear in a long time. I don’t expect that I’ll write many complete tracks with it, but I walk away from an hour of noodling with a big smile on my face and feeling super positive about music making generally. It’s heaps of fun and really immediate and inspiring. I recommend playing one for a few minutes in a store if possible and you may be surprised by how much you like it.
