Ah the good times. It was a different time, different artists. I was in the eighth grade. For me, it was a time of ambition, that ultimately saw its doom. And in that moment, I really needed that ambition to keep me going through the year. The Best of 2015 album is perhaps my favorite compilation of all time, extremely close to Best of 2016. It was a different time, different music. We saw the label get launched from a small to medium-sized one. And as we saw the label grow, we also saw the music and albums grow as well. As 2017 had just began, a saga of telling a story through album cover art had ended. A journey of 6 years, come to a close. I saw that there were some songs that extremely resembled the mood of the cover art. Perhaps those artists were always in a guessing game, trying to decide how the next album's mood will be. We could never completely accurately guess the next song and its mood, purpose, and even sometimes theme that came from Monstercat. Nevertheless, those years largely came to a close as 030 was launched. I remembered so many emotions and questions running through my mind as I saw what the cover art could have possibly entailed: was this really the end? I had simultaneously mourned the ending of a by-gone age and waited excitedly for the next one. We then saw that there were much variety to the songs posted, much to many of our gratitude. I had counted the songs released since the last album one day, and realized it was more than the standard 30. It was at that moment, I knew something big was coming. It was right after the 40th song was released (the mega-collab that was Unity) that we finally got a sneak-peek of the next album. I remember waiting for the message to finally come: "Our new album has arrived!" And alas, the day had finally come. It was Monstercat: Uncaged Vol. 1. It was great. But in that greatness, I had come to realize that the album cover stories weren't coming back. Over the next few Uncaged albums, the next different sounding than the last, we had heard a great variety of songs. I remember anxiously waiting for Best of 2017 to come out. And it had finally come. I had so many expectations in regards to the mix I was expecting: How were they going to do it this time? What kind of story were they going to tell us with their mix, like they did with 2015 and 2016? I was expecting to, at the very least, to have one of the great emotional rollercoasters of my life. The day had finally come, only to realize that the album didn't have a mix in it. I looked on the RU-vid video mix later, to find out that there was no "story" to it, not even a structure at all. The next year, in 2018, there was the announcement of splitting up the label in two. My first reaction was anger, because what kept me listening for so long was the fact that there was so much variety that could go into a single album. Alas, I kept on as usual, excited at the new but mourning to see the old again. I subscribed to the second channel - "Monstercat: Instinct" - instantly. From there, I discovered that the music posted there was mainly geared towards "radio" music. Which I kindof liked. It was again in Best of 2018 that I was disappointed. Not only were there not any mixes in the "purchaseable" album, but the mix on RU-vid was split in two - "Instinct" and "Uncaged." It was from this point forward, that I've constantly grown to like more the individual pieces of music but growing more disappointed in each new compilation. So, here we are, in 2020. Most of us are probably at home more because of the pandemic (Me as well). I've seen that there were more new comments than usual regarding the old music, and I decided that that can't be a coincidence (I wanna take this chance to say "Hi"). I've had this duality of emotion for a long time, listening to the old music while simultaneously enjoying the new music. I've enjoyed each and every artist in 2020 while enjoying the old compilations more than the current ones. It's nice to see, other than numbers, that there are other people like me. It makes me feel not alone in this sentiment. Nevertheless, we are all here to enjoy the music we love, whether it be of new or old.
