A ring of 250k particles made of different minerals collapses into moons which collide and interact with each other, eventually only leaving a few moons left.
This is not my first attempt at a moon-forming / circumplanetary disk. It is the second major project of this type for me, I'm doing much more with the first project and hence I am still working on it, while this one I feel comfortable posting as-is. Check my community post that I put up around the release time of this video for more info on the first project. One major difference is the materials, this project has more materials, although the older one included water while this one does not.
Each mineral is represented by a different color. The different minerals have different densities, so denser ones tend to sink toward the center of the moons that form, this is why although the minerals are represented by vastly different colors, the majority of them are denser and thus locked up inside the moons, resulting in the overall yellowish color of the moons' exteriors, owing to a majority presence of basalt (yellow) on the surface, with less common but similar colors green and cyan (representing quartz and enstatite respectively) also often being on the surface, giving the yellowish color a greensish tint as well. I've included below a table of which colors represent each mineral and the densities they got in the simulation, getting the densities right is tricky so while I've tried to give them close to real life densities, they are not perfect. In the table I also include how much mass each material got, the mass numbers are very arbitrary since I wasn't such how much of each there should realistically be. If you know of resources on this subject please let me know. After the setup of this sim I did find that the ratio of iron to nickel should have 5-7% nickel, so I can use the going forward, but I'm not sure what the others should be.
Minerals table, ordered by density:
Mineral | Color | Density | Total Mass
Quartz | Green | 2.65251 g/cm^3 | 0.0005 M_Earth
Basalt | Yellow | 2.95857 g/cm^3 | 0.005 M_Earth
Enstatite | Cyan | 3.23886 g/cm^3 | 0.002 M_Earth
Olivine | Pink | 3.77072 g/cm^3 | 0.005 M_Earth
Perovskite | Dark Green | 3.91465 g/cm^3 | 0.005 M_Earth
Iron | Blue | 7.84927 g/cm^3 | 0.001 M_Earth
Nickel | Purple | 8.91343 g/cm^3 | 0.0005 M_Earth
The time elapsed in-simulation during this video is 14 days, 13 hours, 18 minutes. 250k particles were used, and by the end of the simulation there were 32766 bodies left, most particles had become incorporated into the moons.
