I am absolutely loving Moon Girl and I can feel my inner child beaming while watching it. It’s really frustrating as a teacher in this day and age where so much legislation is going against teaching accurate history and race in schools. Heck, it’s already bad that they won’t even let teachers support lgbt students by teaching inclusivity. I went from teaching in a school where they admin actively named antiracism and dismantling white supremacy, now I’m at a school that serves predominantly black students and are teaching them white and Hispanic history and barely any black history. It’s so sad to see these kids know more about the ppl who colonized their ancestors (the white and Spanish) than their own ancestry. It really feels like the world is going so many steps back after all the work to take a few steps further. At these schools we see black kids being ruled over by white teachers and white admin who do not truly care about them. I try my best to teach my kids their history on the down low but it’s a shame I even have to do it that way. And this school butchered black history month for these kids. A whole mess. It’s so frustrating.

Ugh! 😩 That's awful. Thank you for doing what you can for their development and self-image! 💞 I remember being in middle school during my first year of history class in 6th grade. We talked about prehistory. Then moved to the dawn of human habitation. And I got excited, because I was SO ready to learn about the birth of "civilization" and early African culture. But, my nerdy little Black ass got reality checked hard. This was 1996. I didn't have the language to call it out, but that year I learned more about institutional racism than anything else. I didn't have a teacher like you. Everyone looking out for my healthy Black mental growth were Black women outside institutional settings.

Nice video. I did notice that many cartoons fans were angry moon girl got a funky pop and called it out because amphiba and the owl house characters did not get one. They were also angry about the promo it’s getting too. I’m very annoyed about this because when other shows with non white characters (anime, or shows like amphiba and owl house) air they get so much support. But when it comes to black main characters they complain? They are always saying we need new black characters and not race swaps, but look at moon girl she’s a original black marvel character and all they do is hate on her already. Black people go through so much. Anyway moon girl is SO good!

About the negative discourse in animation, I've had a legitimate argument with a white dude about Avatar the Last Airbender because I said that none of the characters are white and was venting about how much I hated that the live action version white washed everyone (and made the antagonist dark skinned). Someone told me "there's no way you can tell me they're not white", but there ISN'T. A. SINGLE. WHITE. PERSON. IN. THAT. SHOW. (Or black for that matter, which I'm cool with, show me Tibetan and Indigenous inspired people in western media, lord knows they never get a spotlight). The thing that bothers me the most is that the writers for these sort of shows, especially Avatar, go out of their way to draw influence from non-white and non-western cultures, but people just insist they must be white because a character has pale skin and/or they just can't relate to people who don't look like them. Which is frankly pathetic. Then there's the excuse that they're drawn to resemble white people. They're not. One, they're stylised, and two, they're drawn, and are fictional, and in the case of Avatar live in a reality where people can make water, air, fire and earth move at their own will, we shouldn't rely on the shape of their eyes or skin tone to determine their ethnicities. -__- (I've seen people say the same thing about anime characters, nevermind that the characters speak japanese, live in japanese inspired settings, practise japanese customs and everything else.) To white people, if they're pale, or rich, or royal, or have any generally postive trait, they MUST be white. I'm sick of the general assumption and general expectation of cishet whiteness that surrounds media, I just want to see stories I can relate to and just genuine *-constructive-* diversity because the straight white dude trope is tired as fuck. I wish I could've gotten a show like Moon Girl when I was a teenager. It would've totally changed my outlook on my blackness. I would've come to love it instead of wishing I could be like the white people I see in media.

The "But anime characters look white!" argument pisses me off so much as an Asian person. Most of the time anime characters don't even look realistically human, let alone white! What white person has natural rainbow-colored hair and eyes that take up 3/4 of their faces? If people can look at a character that straight up looks like an alien and go "Oh this character looks white!" then it's not because the character looks white, it's because those people have a white defaultism problem. And it's pretty disgusting how, for once, a non-white group is actually being the center of attention in mainstream media, but white people will whitewash the group every chance they get. They can't leave us alone I swear
@FlLoser7960
@FlLoser7960 Год назад
@@whatever5401 It's an excuse, they will either defend it with that bullshit or say Asians are white which is hilarious. If Asians are white why are you racists towards, mock them, stereotype and hate crime them. If Asians and whites are interchangeable then can an Indian Man play reed Richards. Indians are Asian too, or only light skinneds? Then fine let a Korean actor play a famous white character like James bond and get the white girl at the end. They won't, they just like anime since it detached enough from reality and no effort is out into making white characters distinctly white so the light skin tone in there minds is white unless they'd meet in real life. One they find out they asian its too late and they already are addicted to the show and conveniently ignore for all future anime. I'm sorry you have to go thru this bullshit. They love your culture but hate the people. Happens every time. Chin up my fellow Subscriber 👍🏽❤️

@@whatever5401 bro what? If a character has a pale, lighter skin tone is it wrong of me to say they’re white? The same thing applies if they have a darker skin tone I would say they’re black. Ethnicity and race are 2 different things, there’s a ton of different ethnic groups but only 2 races, white and black and if a character isn’t black and has a pale skin tone then they’re white, regardless of their ethnicity.
@whatever5401
@whatever5401 5 месяцев назад
@@nero474 There are so many things wrong with your reply lol First of all, "white" doesn't mean pale, it means NATIVE EUROPEAN DESCENT. A fully German or Irish person would be considered white even if they're tanned, but a fully Chinese or Korean person would NOT even if their skin is whiter than snow, because they are NOT native to Europe. Second of all, that's not how race works. Skin color is irrelevant to determining race. Race is all about phenotypes. A black person can have white skin and blond hair due to albinism and their race would still be "black". A South Asian can be as dark as your average black person and they still would be considered part of the "brown" race. An East Asian can be paler than a white person and their race would still be "East Asian" instead of "white" And finally, I don't know if you've been living under a rock for the entirety of your life, but white and black aren't the only races that exist. Every single racial classification that I can find classifies humans into at least 3 races and categorizes East Asians (even the pale ones) as non-white. What you're describing is "skin color", not "race".

As a white person who lives in a prominently white country that is slowly starting to become more diverse, you and many other black creators made me realize than just because I am surrounded by white people most of my time, it doesn't mean I should never draw black people, because that's just an excuse. I want to learn of different cultures, stories of people to get inspired, stories of many people and maybe one day be able to write story with people of color that will be seen positively, not because 'I am trying as a white person', but because I want to tell stories, and not everyone is white and/or cis. We also have rock and roll, Chuck Berry invented the genre. I feel like black people forget about it and I just wish we had more notable artists in today's music industry that do rock and roll. Edit: not to say we can't do many other genres
@donttalktomeyoureannoying8736
I feel like Little Richard should be credited and also I hate to say it, Ike Turner as well. If you do research on rock music, it was directed influenced by the blues, but Little Richard and Ike shaped the sound of what we know today. And Chuck Berry is a p3d0file who served prison time for being with a 14 year old girl and he often denounced his black heritage by saying he was Native American. So ion know about him.

Another companion book for paradigm-changing badasses: A great partner to When the World was Black 1&2 is Rutger Bregman’s “Humankind,” an easy read that’s sure to help you win debates, and just might help us all sleep a little better at night. With additional evidence on how chill humans were pre-patriarchy, and how different modern criminal justice systems or schools ARE in places like the Netherlands... Gotta love how much he clues his readership into the wisdom of our original peoples (like Iturians, Khoi, Aeta, etc…), feminist awareness of how matriarchies were once the norm, and why things changed. His sections on justice reform or economics paired so well with Michelle Alexander’s “The New Jim Crow” imo! Really gives a sense of how beautiful societies can be, once more people are aware of the *fuller and un-edited* science and history.

I've noticed that those in power (race, class, gender, etc) have this NEED to have their voices heard in EVERY situation no matter how much it does not involve nor include them. It's something I've been working on myself when in POC spaces or speaking about POC issues, knowing when to keep my mouth shut and when to use my voice as someone with privilege. They seem to believe that because they got the system working for them that automatically means they're right and they know what they're talking about because they 'succeeded' in a game that was rigged in their favor. Yet, they don't see themselves as privileged in part cuz they were brought up by the system to believe they got everything on their own merit. It's a cycle that is designed to perpetuate itself. We as those with privilege HAVE to do all that we can to support, and that starts with listening and acknowledge where you do have privilege and how it benefits you. Learning and exposure are the best tools, but as you said, we are not taught it. I got MAD lucky that I went to fairly 'liberal' schools up north that was a lot more honest in elementary school than any high school I went to in the south...and even then there is SO much that I never knew until even after college that didn't teach as much as it should have. Before the internet we had to go out of our way to learn more, but now it's so easy to learn the truth that there's just no excuse for ignorance anymore. Part of that ignorance is the belief that if the oppressed are allowed equality that the roles will be reversed and the privileged will be treated the way they treated others in the most extreme ways.

Something that many people don't realize is that things like gender and race are a huge part of out identity most of the time. I know as a trans man I will have the true male experience I've never dealt with all the issues men face and possibly never will. Being born and raised female has heavily formed my identity. It would be awesome for young black trans boys or afabs to see themselves in these characters better especially making them protagonists. I'm not sure what to name him yet bit I would be thankful if anyone would recommend me an name for an insecure younger nerdy sibling who hates being protected by his older sis all the time.

Eaton itay not fit the description but it was my friends name. Just throwing it out there. If you don't take it it's fine it s a gift you make of it as you wish respectfully decline or accept and all. I do however appreciate what your doing for young black boys trans or not. There stories where they can be sensitive and vulnerable need to be told. I hope you like the name btw but you again don't have to use it. My friend is a great guy tho si I'd love to immortalize him if you don't mind. Regardless have a great day and God bless you for your work. 👍🏽🏳️‍⚧️ 🙏🏽

@5:46 I have heard of this case before and not only does the lack of justice or proper acknowledgment infuriate me, but it reminds me of a less large scale and violent event in Canadian history. The main event that comes to mind is Africville , a despite government trying to prevent it, thriving Black community formed after the end of legal slavery in Canada. You can find “old” articles and news broadcasts from (still running companies like CBC), where they try to convince the residents that the entire town being bulldozed was for the residents benefit. Many families who had lived there for generations, but couldn’t find a document like leases, ended up homeless and stuck in predominantly white communities Africville citizens had tried to avoid due to the heavy discrimination. I can’t explain this the best, but if anyone is interested they can look up the story! (Side note Canadian kindness stereotypes really overshadow the EXTENSIVE history of racism and GENOCIDE. Such as hate crimes, legal/justice system discrimination, medical discrimination, police using excessive force, government still ignoring and mistreating Indigenous populations, happen at noticeable/disturbing consistency, but it is ignored and sugar coated.)

Hi Harriyanna. I am a random white dude with blonde hair who just was informed about the incident in Tulsa by you. My main take is that if I were to come into a black community alone, and my decisions are as benign as can be, would it still disturb the peace? Cause I really don't want to disturb the peace at all. I know I am seeming shady but I am trying my best. Cause let me just say, I was appalled about a white mob destroying a black community like that. Two days straight a prosperous black community just in shambles. I don't want to associate myself with people like that, even if the entire race is to blame. I'm not to be guilty of anything because there is more I have done for POCs with love rather than hate and I am so glad I was educated on this and that people of my skin color have made history of subjugation. Sad thing is we aren't living in a time of peace because there are still older people who lived through times like this who think it was the peak of their life (news flash, uneducated rednecks who peaked in high school, cough my grandmother who is racist beyond my own terms). Most of the leaders are people who are those types of people, which is why nothing is getting done. And honestly, I'd rather see to the next generation and see what happens because we now live in a progressive era that will keep progressing and the more we progress, the more we give each other rights. I am going to stop here because honestly I am very insecure about how I speak of this topic because I am white and am not trying at all to do anything bad. Just know I am appalled and I hope that we as people can finally progress and encourage diversity once and for all. 😊

Some additional history relating to the video Atlanta's Black community was very intentional in how they created solidarity in Black business and that got them access to banks that otherwise were trying to exclude them but when the White banks saw the money the Black businesses were making they wanted in on it. Another Black community that was destroyed by similar means to what happened with Tulsa happened where Lake Lanier in Georgia resides today. It was a place called Oscarville in 1912, a thriving community that was used as a scapegoat when a White woman died. The church was specifically targeted as it was the safe haven in the town. I also think it's always important to remember that segregation wasn't that long ago. My dad grew up during segregation and was in highschool during integration. That's living history but I definitely think it's treated as if it were the distant past. And that's probably intentional because most photographs of that time are in black and white but color photos definitely existed.

Very nice video, and I appreciate you givin me some knowledge. As a black man, I should know this stuff, but like you said, they don’t teach this stuff in school. Btw I know this probably very unoriginal to say, but has anyone told you that you look kinda like Moon Girl? Not trying to be a jerk, just making an observation 😇👍🏾

I feel like there should be a cultural appropriation class in school where different people from commonly appropriate d cultures come and tell how to appreciate instead of appropriate because people aren't even aware what they're doing is wrong sometimes which isn't an excuse they just need to be taught not to do that shit
