Hey folks! A lot of you are bringing up the Moon's rotation (near vs. far side). I didn't cover it in this episode, which is just about phases, but I'll be talking about it in a later episode about gravity, and again about the Moon itself.

Will you be doing any talks about Gravity at some point? It's just so perplexing and interesting to me... I have so many questions (I don't know anything about astronomy really, but I'm super excited about starting some at Uni) Like what is it’s speed? Is it faster than light (logically: no) how do you even measure it’s speed if it slows down time? do you have to measure it separate from time? (can they be separated?) How does it affect us immediately and long-term, and what are it's far-reaching effects, on the universe, it's origins, its existence, appearance and functioning. As I said, I have lots of questions, it's all a bit of a mystery to me (I don't expect that'll change, since our knowledge of what we don't know increases faster than our knowledge of what we do know) But I LOVE your channel... space, the universe, all it's perplexities are just awe-inspiring!! I feel small, but it's great to admire it all :)

The phrase "dark side of the moon" often used to refer to the far side of the moon, so Phil was making the terminology clear to avoid confusion and put this obsolete usage to rest. I'm sure he wasn't doing it to illicit snarky comments from a smart-alec like you.

Moon doesn't lit so it is dark all the time. It is the reflecting portion and non-reflecting portion.

This video is great but i'm ever so slightly disappointed that he didn't explain any of the odd things that commonly happen to the moon, like eclipses, or when it turns red-ish-orange, or when it's huge and looks like it's crashing into Earth. Perhaps that will come in another episode.

CrashCourse Excellent! I was just thinking we'd have to wait for Astronomy 2 for this. Hope to see some excellent animations of it's inclination. I don't think a lot of people realize how extreme the Moon's inclination is with Earth and how it relates to the frequency of eclipses.

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but to answer your question about the moon appearing to look huge. It is always the same size, it's just an optical illusion. It only looks big because our brains compare it to reference objects on the horizon such as tress or buildings.

I've been fascinated by the moon ever since I was a child, I even have a tattoo of it, so even though I knew everything that was mentioned in this video, I still liked it a lot! One thing I didn't know was the word 'earthshine', what a lovely word for that wonderful phenomenon!

I'm finding Phil's voice more and more soothing the more I listen to him. He was overly nerdy to begin with, but then again so was Hank. He obviously loves his field of expertise which makes it all the more enjoyable! Speaking of the moon, where I live, tonight (September 27th, 2015), there was a total lunar eclipse (therefore it was a Blood Moon) AND it was a supermoon (the point when it looks the largest because it's the closest to Earth in it's orbit)! It's about 6am for me, so it's still out, and actually, it's shining directly into my bedroom window (though the actual eclipse started at a little after 7pm, reaching totality a little after 9pm. It stayed in the total phase until about 10:20pm, and was full again at about 12:30am). But I don't think think I've ever seen a supermoon before!!! Also got really lucky because it's super, super clear out. Not a cloud in the sky. And light pollution where I live is a bit less than it normally is, and I can see the Milky Way too!! And it's still soooo big and bright! It's really bizarre and cool looking. I just can't put into words how beautiful and awesome and cool and weird and strange and bright and bizarre it is.

Oh! Also, I got a really cool pic just before it reached totality, so it's red on the left side (from where I was standing) and silvery white on the right side, with a black stripe down the middle. Super awesome. Seriously though, it's bright. I also took a picture about 2 hours ago and it looks like I tried taking a picture of the sun, but everything else is dark and it looks really strange and COOL!!!

On looking at the Moon with binoculars or a telescope, it's interesting that you only see the "face" on the Moon if you look at it with your naked eyes, but that face disappears when you use such a device to see it in more detail :) . It's also nice that technology has progressed enough that gaming technology can replicate this appearance of the Moon :) . (In at least one recent game i've played, possibly GTA V, you can see this effect of seeing the face on the Moon when you simply looks up at it, then the face disappears when you zoom in on it :) .)

I don't understand how there can be a full moon when the earth is in between the sun and the moon... shouldn't the moon be completely within the earth's shadow and not appear lit at all?

That's because the earth is flat and the phases of the moon are caused by the sun being behind the moon then slowing moving directly in front of the moon. Lunar eclipses do not happen...

I'm 23 years old and I have never really "gotten" the phases of the moon before, I understood the phenomenon that was causing it, but I couldn't wrap my head around it in a way that made it intuitive. This video fixed that. Thanks!

this was an awesome video. interpretation is based on perception...so for me..this was super spiritual. I thank the universe for your cogent explanation.
