A thematic analysis of Moon. Basically what the visuals, dialogue, motifs, and general subtext all lead to, summed up in a simple, to-the-point and concise visual essay.
If you believe I'm wrong please discuss in the comments below. This is (hopefully) some sort of learning experience. I don't claim to know everything and would hate to lead someone else to a wrong conclusion. So if you can prove a film is saying something else based on evidence, please share.
Thank you.

One beautiful aspect of this film is how heartbreakingly kind the AI (Gerty) is instead of being deceitful or evil.

If you look at the video logs, there are at least 15 years of clones. If you can predict how the clones will respond then you can control even a scenario where they realize they are clones. Sam fell for GERTY just like we all did. "GERTY is a good robot and just wants to help." Programming is simple: Follow his lead and help and he stays calm and doesnt break everything on his way out lol

Dennis Daenekas To be fair, being "evil" or "good" isn't merely intention but action. Even if GERTY is neither by intentional programming of said ethics, his actions in helping Sam Bell make him "Good" by default. What he does for Sam ends up bringing about the downfall of Lunar Industries as is revealed in the audio at the end of 'Moon' and from brief background scenes shown in the sequel 'Mute'..

Let me preface, I love this movie and enjoy your videos, but the difference in Sam reactions is explained in the movie. The older Sam Bell changed from his time spent on the Moon; in the movie and is even mentioned how the old Sam remembered his temper whilst the new Sam still had it. They are different because the new Sam has not spent 3 years to change and progress on the person he thought he was. They were all implanted with the same pasts and identities but will still progress like a human would during three years. Reflecting on their decisions and changing for the better or worse.
@Dontuse77

came to write exactly this. they *ARE* clones, perfect copies of one another. the _changes_ seen are how time has affected the older Sam. presumably, under the same circumstances, each & every Sam ages (including a personality mellowing) the same way since he's left by himself for 3 years. thats a long time to reflect on things your past actions. but this time with having two Sams interact... that's a whole new scenario

C0Opd0g I have no idea why all of u loved this movie! I just watched it and it was confusing af! I've so many questions right now! Q1) if they are clones why is there a rescue mission to take them back home? Coz technically they don't have a home.. it's the real Sam's home. Q2) GERTY is supposed to help the company not the clones, isn't it? Q3) What exactly is the need for these clones? What work do they do? Why put these memories in them? Why not put such memories that makes them more productive n not damaging to the company's plan? Q4) if the sam who spend almost 3 years was so ill why wasn't he given any medication? Q5) wasn't this movie supposed to be a sci-fi? Why is this a philosophical movie?? (It sucks according to me coz my expectations were totally different especially after seeing movies like Martian and Interstellar) If anyone can answer these Questions I'll be very grateful!

Even though all the Sams are genetically identical, they can develop in different directions. Two Sams, who have just been woken up, would indeed be identical in every way. But two Sams, who have spent a couple of years on the Moon, could be quite different due to different events that happen to them.
@dennisdaenekas3209
@dennisdaenekas3209 6 лет назад
1) It was a lie. They had guns. They were going to exterminate them and just reboot a new clone and leave. 2)GERTY to me felt like he was following a programming of "If the clone/s figured out they were clones." Better to work with them getting off the ship rather than risk them breaking everything. Every clone would come up with the same escape plan since they are copies. GERTY rebooting would also serve its purpose of a redundancy error in the computer. The clone wouldnt matter since he would probably be executed when he lands. 3)The real Sam was back on Earth with his daughter. He probably signed a contact to have his DNA taken to make clones since training a new human to do his job would require years of training in a facility as well as an updating paycheck. The clones work for free and the system is automated. He is a repair guy. Memories would keep the clone focused and not distracted on "why am i here?" Cloning would probably recreate his hippo-campus that stored his memories and this movie is trying to stay closer to "this is probable sci-fi" and creating solid "fake" memories inside an organic hippocampus is kind of "out there." 4)the clones only last 3 years before they die. all of them. even the one that escaped. he will die in hawaii in 3 years if he actually gets there. 5)it is sci-fi. if you stretch this you can make it philosophical but the movie wasnt going there.if you have a philosophical mind you yourself can start asking yourself questions but they never touched base on that at all in the movie. I actually came cause I wanted to understand the ending dialogue when he was entering orbit. was this company doing something illegal and they got in trouble? it was an ok movie in my opinion.
@jftt42
@jftt42 6 лет назад
Dennis Daenekas it said that the company's stock value dropped by 32%, which would be either because he exposed them when he got to earth, or because he opened the live chat thing in the moon base before he left by reprogramming one of the harvesters to crash into the tower, most likely it's both. Anyway, their customers found out what they were doing with the clones , thought it was clearly inhumane and unethical, and switched to getting their energy from another company (the movie hinted at some point that there might be other companies doing the same thing).

The ending, It had my mind going- The Clone made it to earth, and caused a shit storm of controversy. He was called a refugee/crazy person that needs to be locked away in a asylum; which I took it to mean how the government/media works in covering up a disaster/controversial situations to protect the bigger picture. Amazing movie, and very well directed/acted- 6 ppl at most in the entire movie, 2 ppl carrying the weight of the movie; amazing job!

But they are probably different though because they are at different time stages. The older Sam has spent years on the moon and the younger Sam has basically "just" arrived. I just want to add that the clones ARE copies, the differences between the first sam we meet and the one who rescues him are due to the fact that the first clone has already been working on the moon for 3 years. the differences in their personality are there to highlight the changes to ones psyche after that much time in isolation.

It's often that after watching a good movie, I want to discuss its meaning or at least listen or read someone else's analysis of it. I easily find channels that are consistent in movie reviews, but not many offer a breakdown, so thanks for offering your take on these so far, can't wait to see more! :D I'll just suggest that you try giving your voice a little more of a personality. the reason the sams are different are not because free will exists, but because one has 3 years more of memories and experiences than the other, it is implied that the sam will go through the exact same development over the course of the 3 years every time he is woken up. The reason that this 5th sam (or whatever number he was) breaks the pattern is because he found the previous sam outside.

Soo, incidentally... Maybe the real Sam Bell became Zen like, before the death of his wife, giving him a better chance at raising his daughter, incidentally freeing himselfs from their cycle?

Don't get me wrong, I loved Moon. Still one thing about the movie, I don't understand. If the rover accident was only an implant in a new clones mind, how was the new Sam able to rescue the old Sam from a rover accident? Was this just in his mind. If so then never would have been able to rescue the old Sam. If it was just a coincidence, it's a fairly large one. I'm sure there is a logical explanation for this, but I don't see it.
@Gangsta0wns456
@Gangsta0wns456 5 лет назад
Although the new Sam also had the memory of the accident implanted in him, that didn’t stop him from finding the old Sam (the old clone) in the crashed rover. The new Sam found him by mere happenstance after he walked in on the “live” video chat that Gerty was having with the company higher-ups; making him curious to figure out what was going on. Eventually he convinced Gerty to let him leave the station where he found the “old” Sam in the crashed rover (where he probably should’ve died like the other Sam’s before him) by straight luck, and then was able to communicate to the old clone before he died. By doing so, they both discovered the secret room with all of the clones. From that, the new Sam broke the cycle and went back to Earth as a whistleblower. That is how I interpreted things.
@davidhunternyc1

@Gangsta0wns456 But then why did Lunar Industries send a rescue "assassination" squad to the Moon if Lunar knew there was a possibility for any of the Sam's to escape back to Earth via the H3 pod?
@austin78993
@austin78993 4 года назад
@@Gangsta0wns456 Agreed. It's luck maybe, but part of me wonders if the lesson of this movie is that AI is "programmed to help." In much the same way Sam grows and changes into a peaceful guy with hobbies after 3 years in isolation, maybe Gerty started to develop and change it's opinion on what is 'right.' In much the same way maybe you interpret the bible differently over time, maybe Gerty changes its interpretation of what it means to help. It no longer views helping the mission as helping. Maybe it ultimately wants to be caught. In a way, Gerty knows what Sam is capable of. Maybe what breaks the loop is Gerty wants to be caught, wants to help, and knows the Sams will take care of the rest if they only knew what was going on.
@austin78993
@austin78993 4 года назад
@@davidhunternyc1 Stupidity and laziness. I think what it ultimately boils down to is they underestimated Gerty. The Sams would never have any idea of what was going on if it weren't for Gerty. It's almost like Gerty is laying the framework the whole movie. Trying to get caught on the live call. Asking to have it's memory wiped so Sam can escape at the end. I found myself wondering the whole movie "Gerty has to have some security tape to be able to watch Sam sneak out, cut that gasline, etc, but nonetheless he's never once stopped." I think Gerty learns that if they're going to block live communication, than it's mission can change. This movie could have gone totally different, but Gerty allows Sam to solve the puzzle. I think this movie is as much a lesson in human growth over time as it is in the growth of AI over time. Gerty learns that real "helping" is not cutting Sam's hair and going about the mission. Gerty learns empathy and ultimately chooses to interpret its mission statement of "I'm here to help" as a far greater mission than just providing data and being Sam's personal assistant day to day. I think what the ultimate lesson here is like most movies about AI: We underestimate how intelligent it can grow to become. Unlike most movies, I think the brilliance of Moon is that it flips the script. People aren't always good and not all AI is bad. I think the brilliance of this movie is that you see Sam change in three years when seeing both Sams interact and that covers up the real theme of the movie that basically asserts that AI will have the potential to grow and better itself just as humanity can. If a person can change in three years, imagine how much a machine can change in 15-20.

Great movie. But I see no reason to believe the Sams are anything but copies in the beginning. The reason they act differently is because they are, at the same time, unique subjects, experiencing different things, shaping them differently. The second Sam was presented with something that make hon doubt his sanity - the sight of himself. This, and everything it implied, got to him, fast. He got high-strung and mildly aggressive, whereas the first Sam was cooler due to his longer time at the station. He was in a state of more like "I'll be going home soon, this is soon behind me, whatever it is." That's my take on it. They're copies genetically, but not in any other way.

I will say this, I feel like the personalities of the 2 Sams should’ve been flipped around, I think that the older Sam should’ve been the one who wanted to investigate everything that was going on and the new, younger Sam should’ve been the one that was like “No, that doesn’t matter” Because the younger one doesn’t have all the experience and emotional baggage that the older one does and therefore he should’ve been the one that was just focused on the mission

Dude. Determinism? You’re overthinking this story. The differences between the two Sams are a result of experience and time. The first Sam that we meet in the movie has three more years of experience and has been in isolation during that time. The second one has just “arrived” on the moon. This accounts for the differences. The theme you should be exploring is maturity.

No, both Sams are acting as "Sam" would according to the situations. Their situations are different. There was an unexpected and unforseen change in their environment. New input. New reality . New reactions - still predetermined to react to them in the same way. Two identical Sams, dealing with two different situations. Also both in different physical and mental states because of their deterioration. The film asks if we ALL have illusions of free will. And that are actions and thoughts are all determined. What Jung called HERD MENTALITY (about as much difference between one human and another than one sheep and another). All Samm Bells , All with the illusion of uniqueness - so easily smashed. Alexander ; What are you looking at ? Aristotle(I think?) "Im trying to see the difference between the Kings bones and those of his slaves" Very simple ; Did you do or think anything today which you wouldnt think or do ? Would you kill and eat another human ? *No* ? Most will if the circumstances dictate it. How often do you hear "I have no choice" We need "Ego" / illusion of free will / illusion of "me" / illusion of consciousness " in order to maintain self preservation and self interest. The more complex a species, the more individualistic we think we are. But try to pretend that youre unique among millions , or in fact all 8 billion of us are unique ?. All 8 billion of us do the *EXACT SAME THINGS* with slight differences based on the environment we grew up in. *The only thing that disturbs Sam is the IDEA that hes not unique* He was perfectly content before that. So were all the other Sams. The only thing that actually changed was his perception of himself. His anger is deliberately incorporated as an indication of a strong ego. Whats great about this film is that it argues a timeless , ancient debate in a new way.

Determinism isn't necessarily the belief that different decisions result in the same ultimate outcome, but rather that the decisions themselves are predetermined. So the different Sams having different characteristics, despite being biologically identical (nature), is a result of their different lived experiences (nurture). Neither nature nor nurture leaves room for free will, as one has no personal, conscious control over them.

What I’m gonna think and do next… I really don’t have control over it. It just sort of happens… our thoughts suddenly appear. In order for us to have control, wouldn’t we have to be able to choose our thoughts & such completely which would be a paradox? Because who decided the first thought? It’s kinda like the paradox of the chicken or the egg or who created the creator?

Then wait, if the old family videos that are fake are just for business plans and repetition for each clone of Sam Bell, is Sam Bell a man created BY Lunar Industries? Or was there an original Sam Bell that died on the moon and was actually cloned for many years until the events of this movie where they decide to take control of their own lives? My brain hurts so much, Moon and Enemy are by far the most confusing movies ever made.

i think the original sam bell is a normal guy from earth, if lunar industries could've created him why would they give him a reason to want to go back to earth? ive watched this movie a long time ago so i might have missed something

+Ctrl A my understanding was the original Sam Bell from Earth did his three years and his wife sent him those videos then, so when his term was up he went home and he is the dad you hear in the background of the live video of their daughter. So after he left they just kept using a clone for three years and reusing the same videos of the wife.

Nice video. i Love this movie, seen it a few times, and now i will seeit again cause you and me had such a different understanding so i have to check. That is regarding the different personalities of two Sams. I thought that the difference came from the first guy spending almost three years alone after the cloning/birth process, so from an angry guy he became way more mellow. Not like you suggested that its a difference in dna/decision making or whatever.
@leogothisoscar271

+UchihaDualStorm That was my interpretation, that he original Sam was probably a bit more gruff and all of the Sams start off that way, but slowly over the course of three years they become more serene through their loneliness and desire to be home as well as calming hobbies, such as carving the little town and taking care of the plants.
@SolusBatty
@SolusBatty 8 лет назад
+Browncoat Soprano Yeah and i've seen it again and that is how it is, so it is not just an interpretation. That is why his wife says in a recording that this trip will be good for him, as probably he had a rage outburst (again). Uhm, if you like these one actor in a closed set kind of movies i reccomend Locke (2013), if you haven't seen it already. I've really started to like these kind of movies the most. They focus on a single idea and so they can pull it off "tight". :)

@WhatitallMeant

I only know each term broadly so they seem almost synonymous to me, but I only used determinism as a buzz word to discuss what the film was saying. In the future I will research a little more than I have for this though.

@EdwardDavian1 9 лет назад
+mooseclamps He did use the right term: Determinism is the belief that all events, INCLUDING HUMAN ACTION, are ultimately determined by causes external to the will. Fatalism is the belief that all EVENTS are predetermined and therefore inevitable. Fatalism really doesn't have much to do with this discussion because at the start of the video it clearly mentioned how these movies have a predetermined human action element to them, which is Determinism. Please take your own advice and learn the difference between these two terms before you groundlessly become critical of someone else.

I have no idea why all of u loved this movie!
@jonvthvnx5729
@jonvthvnx5729 6 лет назад
Sharon D'souza 1) It wasn’t a real rescue mission. They were sent to tie up loose ends, and fix the vehicle that was destroyed. 2) Gerty is programmed to help Sam, which he states multiple times. 3) The clones are there to maintain operations, and launch canisters of helium-3 to earth. You may be right about the memories, but that’s a plot-hole I’m willing to overlook otherwise there wouldn’t be a movie. 4) The clones are deliberately designed to die of illness at the end of their three year contract. 5) The film *is* sci-fi. The genre is usually philosophical in nature. It isn’t really confusing at all. Most of your points are explicitly mentioned or explained in the film. The only way you could ask these questions is if you weren’t paying much attention- no offense.

Osterman Firstly I would like to thank u for answering all my Questions.. I'm really grateful.. I gave the movie my undivided attention as I do with all movies.. I guess i just wasnt able to comprehend and understand what was actually happening coz I'm really not that bright and my expectations were totally different. Once again thank you so much.. the movie actually seems nice now 😊

I took it, that the clones had a shelf life of 3 years because of the radiation, hence the need for the new clone. What I wish had been answered, was, what was the purpose of the chamber he got into. Was that prolonging his life as long as they could get him to last, like a chemo, but that doesn't make sense either, because he still had his hair. Maybe I missed something in your answer, or the movie. That was the only unanswered thing that I was stumped over. Unless someone has already covered that here. I'll have to review again. Anyway, enjoyed the movie. Love when there is a plot twist you never see coming.

@@benjiarehart2878 the chamber was a dumpster (coffin), every clone goes there in the end and dies, they store him in the basement or dispose him otherwise.
