The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is the god of zoom for smartphones, and the Galaxy flagships have been like this for a very long time. The question is, can it match up to the Nikon Coolpix P1000? In a world where smartphone cameras are getting better and better each year, the S23 Ultra is definitely a phone to watch out for. Leave a comment on your thoughts!

Hmmm... I have S23 Ultra and used it to take photos of my son during his graduation ceremony which was done at a stadium. So I was quite far away and had to go up to 43x zoom at times in order to capture his facial shot. The photos came out quite sharp and detailed and it was indoor. @MJ-uk6lu
@MJ-uk6lu 11 месяцев назад
@@popovicialincatalin Even if they don't use more than 30x, then S Ultra only has tiny 1/4" quad bayer sensor with actual color resolution of 2.5 megapixels and uses AI to upscale images. And that's at 10x optical zoom. At 30x zoom you are essentially only getting a third of that, which is 0.83 MP image. Meanwhile, K Zoom had 20.7 MP classical bayer camera with 1/2.3" sensor and 10x optical zoom. So you get all full 20.7MP at 10x zoom and if that phone had 100x digital zoom mode, then you would still get 2.07MP pictures. And if you think that K zoom is downgrade at no zoom shots, then you are also wrong, because it has way superior optics that allow smaller sensor to be utilized better by letting in more light and by having sharper glass. Also when S Ultra has to take pics at like 6x zoom, it has to crop it digitally, meanwhile K zoom only adjusts optics, but doesn't sacrifice resolution. So K zoom wins in all cases. The only way it loses is by not having ultrawide camera, but I would argue that having great zoom is way more valuable. Ironically, K Zoom is also lighter by 34 grams and is way shorter and more narrower, but thicker. So actual brick is still S Ultra and S Ultra is harder to fit into pockets while having inferior cameras. Let's be serious and just admit that K Zoom is more pocketable and better photographic device
@popovicialincatalin
@popovicialincatalin 11 месяцев назад
@@MJ-uk6lu I trully appreciate your detailed answer, but I still believe Galaxy K is not for an average consumer. Consumer don't want a literal camera in their pockets, they just want a phone good enough to capture moments they want to remember at a reasonable price. As a whole, the concept of the K was not entirely bad, but the consumer class didn't really like it. The Galaxy K didn't sell well. Let's not forget that this is a smartphone and not a real professional-grade camera. Consumers don't use their phones as professional-grade cameras. They just scroll on social media, watch movies/videos, possibly play music, maybe even play a few games. The Galaxy K was too specialized - it targeted people that want good cameras. But people that want good cameras buy *real* cameras. Not smartphones.

Weird how so many of the 100x s23 photos are blurry and then suddenly the moon (at night) is relatively sharp, almost like a stock texture is being overlaid in software. I wonder how the images would compare if the P1000 spotted a new crater? Would it be visible on the S23?
@josephnevin
@josephnevin Год назад
S23 Ultra is definitely overlaying extra details and sharpness on the moon shots and I've confirmed that. But the thing is that, the software does a pretty convincing job of doing that cause you can frame the shot with a leaf in front of the moon and still have that overlay placed pretty accurately. I never had this experience with my previous phone the mi 11 ultra even with the dedicated moon mode. The second a leaf is placed in front of the leaf and the photo turns out to be a white dough like blob with no details at all.

the whole premise is it being unfair, smaller sensors, smaller lenses, ai proccessed, but mobile and easy to use, vs great sensors, great lenses but very raw photos and cumbersome. its meant to simulate a one and done point and shoot scenario on both platforms cause you can get external zoom lenses on phones, and you can use external laptop/hardware for post proccessing cameras but that wont really work would it

I enjoyed your comparisson again. I love my P1000. It will always beat Samsung and every other smartphone on zoom battles. Not only because of the bigger,but because of the sharper lens as well. To be fair,there are a lot of smartphones these days with bigger image sensors than the P1000. So,at night,you will always take brighter images with them. That's a fact. But you know something? I made another test by myself. I shoot a ship,at night,with my P1000 and the Vivo X80 Pro of my wife. With the X80 you had brighter image than the P1000. And more details,because of the bigger sensor. BUT the parts of the ship that were visible at both images were sharper on the P1000 than on the X80 because of the sharper lens. I'm telling that to highlight what you gain and what you loose between a dedicated camera and a smartphone. I also liked that , this time , you called it bridge camera. Because this is what it is. Not a professional camera. Although I'd wish that wasn't the case. :)

Yea imagine if they took it up real seriously. Combining the best of smartphone sensor and processing tech, Something like a Samsung HP3 1/1.4in 200mp sensor (binned to 50mp and 12.5mp if needed). Vivo X100pro plus is expected to have that sensor with 5x optical zoom, and it can probably pull off a fairly impressive 20x zoom with that. So if Nikon uses the same sensor and processing, but adds an 80x optical lens, one could get impressive 320x(4x of 80x) out of that. Then they could refine the optics further too with better coatings etc. as done for smartphone lenses, And have far better stabilization, shooting ability of 8k 30fps and 4k 60fps. Processing features for multi-stack frames can be added, that can also remove atmospheric distortion, or perform focus stacking for macros.

Want to come here and note as a 27 year photo industry kid: there is absolutely nothing professional about the P900/1000 series cameras. They cannot come anywhere near matching the quality output of even 1" sensor cams like the Sony RX series, let alone APS-C or 35mm format product. But. They do at least have a real optical zoom. Sadly, the sensor equipped by the Nikon is subpar and even though it wins this shootout at every level, it could be so much better if Nikon would license better architecture. PS Samsung's added sharpness lowers detail and dynamic range. The Nikon shows you a file that has greater post production potential. The Samsung is producing an image designed to look better immediately on screen. Put your P series product through basic Snapseed or PSX and it will outshoot the S23+, every single time.

It’s important to note that the P1000 isn’t really a “professional” piece of equipment. It’s a four year-old point and shoot model that’s essentially using a (by the standard of 2019) really nice 16mp cell phone sensor. It’s primary gimmick is it’s 3,000mm zoom which is what makes it so unique.

@philipchesleyiii
@philipchesleyiii Год назад
Professional probably not. Hobbyists piece of equipment, yes. It's actually a bridge camera. I'd say most point and shoots don't let you experiment with aperture/shutter speed modes, nor do point and shoot camera layouts, while holding, even remotely resemble a dsrl/mirrorless.. You just point and shoot, and hope for the best, with a point and shoot. Thats not the case with the P1000. While I don't see many people using them for weddings or family portraits, as it's not made for that. Which I'm sure that's what you would define as professional, its ability to make money. I've seen many enthusiasts & hobbyists, me included (not the only "camera" I own), use them for wildlife or landscape photography. I would say the zoom, which at super far ranges is meh(not its fault-atmosphere), but when used on closer up objects is nice to have. Making it a good starter camera. Not having to swap out lenses, while still having control of the settings is nice. That said.... "It's important to note" -No it isn't. Seems like the title irked you enough to make a comment bashing the camera. As a user of the P1000 your comment equally irked me. That said take your snootie ass elsewhere.😁
@jwebcoding7289
@jwebcoding7289 Год назад
@@philipchesleyiii I totally agree with your points about the P1000 as a bridge camera. I wouldn't call my comment snooty since I didn't have that goal in mind when I wrote it but, in hindsight, I can see how you read it like that. The P1000 is by no means a bad camera. I haven't used one personally but I also know that lots of people really like them and I have looked at it in the past as a possible investment. My argument was more meant to say that I don't think it's a proper "apples to apples' comparison to compare the image quality of an older camera that wasn't exactly using the highest quality sensor on the market in the first place to a modern flagship smartphone camera. One that doesn't have a shabby optical zoom of it's own even it's not in the same league as a P1000 specifically. I personally feel that if it weren't for the immense optical zoom of the P1000 then this contest wouldn't be nearly as close when it comes to capturing distant objects. I think the comparison would have been more interesting with a more traditional pro camera equipped with a lens with the same optical zoom as the phone itself for a direct comparison of image quality at roughly similar distances and focal length even if that has its own problems too.
