No, definitely the strongest climbing family. Mom and Dad were not just pro climbers, but highly distinguished professional climbers. Even the family dog boulders V2.
Jaw dropped on Brooke's flash of Eye on the Beast, god damn, can't tell you how many times that heel hook slipped and I clipped my knee on a nearby hold from it, but to see her casually do it first go. Mind blown! Shawn's flash of Dark Arts and Check in Now was insane to me, as a fellow shortie, its so hard to keep tension in those far extensions and to be able to power off of them, especially on the first go, god damn! I knew before, but goddamn you two are insane!
The first climbing comp I ever saw was the Olympics. I knew nothing about the sport, or the competitors, but I can spell U.S.A., so I was watching Brooke. Her smile at the top of W2 in the Semi's, which I don't think anyone else had yet topped, made me a real fan of hers on the spot. Neither of you is old enough to remember when, in 1972, Olga Korbut did a full back bend and grinned at the world on TV, from between her ankles, but it was the moment that put gymnastics on the map. That next summer tons of kids, including my sister and I, were in gymnastics class. Four years later Nadia dropped the perfect 10, but the only reason anyone in the US was watching, or cared was Olga. Brooke's grin at the top of that boulder was the 'Olga Korbut' moment for comp climbing. If it were up to me, that photo would have been the cover of the Wheaties box. It's only because Brooke drew me in, and sold me on the sport, that I now know who Janja Garnbret is and can appreciate how amazing she is. The same is true for Natalia Grossman, Chaehyun Seo, Ai Mori, Miho Nonaka, Jessie Pills, Oriane Bertone, and a half dozen more women from around the world, whom I recognize by sight when they come on stage. I know and appreciate them all because: Brooke. One other person I know because of Brooke, is Shawn. Shawn, your videos have shown me the different world that is outdoor bouldering. Where in Brooke's sport you have 4-6 min to figure it out, or not; you have shown me what it is to project a climb and figure it out literally one finger tip placement at at time, over weeks, months, or perhaps years to get it. Through your videos I see the tribe/community/collaborative aspect of climbing, although it's very apparent in the comp game too. It is a very different vibe. The love, genuine respect, and admiration that shows on your face, and in your voice every time you speak about your little sister is so cool to see, and speaks volumes about you. You are both outstanding ambassador's of your sports. Yes, I'd love to see more videos of you two together. My thanks to you both.
ah omg same! i just turned on the tv one day and saw the women’s semis at the olympics and first person i saw was brooke and i just knew after she did that boulder that i was about to fall in love with the sport
As someone who’s been following comp climbing since 2018, this is one of the most wholesome climbing comments I’ve read. Glad you’re in the community! It needs people with a positive attitude like this.
Yeah I was like "ok if I work hard I can do this one", then they proceed to not just flash, but obliterate that series of V10s. I will never not be impressed by and in awe of these two
SHAWN. We need more vids. You inspire me to try hard as hell. Your style is so intoxicating because it makes impossible rock seem so casual. You can try hard as hell and still be shaka. Please consider posting more of your ‘mellow’ sessions
Just watched this earlier with my daughter .. she's 7 and currently nursing a broken Radius and Ulna after falling off a boulder problem and taking a 16 foot fall and landing sideways. She finds you both a big inspiration so it's been great to watch this for the motivation and feel good powers! Absolute beast mode engaged throughout. We started putting out a few climbing video's on youTube so appreciate the work and effort that goes into these!!
Just back to watch this a third time…this time watching closely for technical tips and gained so much out of watching you guys move on the board. Make more when you find the time! They’re fun, inspiring, and informational.
This is the best video on the internet. There's nothing better than a surf sesh with one of my brothers. Loved watching you guys just do your thing and casually crush together.
This was awesome thanks. I'd love to see more of you and Brooke climbing together. Would also love a climbing session and q and A with your parents. You are all inspiring with your power, commitment to hard work and zen attitudes. Love it!
I’ve been addicted to the moon board recently so more vids of the 2019 would be sooooo sick 🔥 this vid was such an amazing surprise out of nowhere today ❤
I can barely figure out v5s so watching this is actually crazy lmao...seeing the strength, dexterity, and precision required is so mind boggling. Makes it even more humbling when I jokingly get on v8s and understand just how small some of these holds are, and how little you have to even grab
Cool vid, if you were going to do another board vid together, would be fun to see you each set a problem that you could do but thought the other would struggle on.
So inspiring and humbling to watch you two climb more problems at this grade in one night than I will climb in my lifetime! And I am so hyped for this collab. Very curious to hear your take on the similarities and differences between training for comps and training for outdoors. Also what's your favorite climbing memory of 2023?
That was sick. I love board videos because I actually know what those holds are like. All those outdoor project while definitely cooler than a MB problem are so out of touch (literally) it is hard to know what it is like. This was like being there and witnessing what could be a life proj getting flashed. So sick. More of it all please!
