As a group or as soloists...all members of Mamamoo are always strong in authenticity...we no longer wonder on that...and thank you for bringing these two songs back...the whole album of Dark Side of the Moon is a phenomenon of itself since everything is so Moonbyul, that is gender-breaking norm...
a crazy thing about "absence" is that she wrote it based on a k-drama she was watching at the time, a couple in it had broken up because the guy cheated, then got back together but the woman never really fully trusted him since then. this was written from her point of view, or what byul thought of it. just can't believe she managed to pour so much emotion into a song based on a drama... again, the fandom absolutely loved (and still love) this song since it was vocalist moonbyul at her best... there are others from her, such as "in my room" and the songs she's been releasing on her birthday, "snow" and "a miracle 3 days ago" as mentioned, the choreographer for "eclipse" came back to work on this song. and byul actually tends to use male dancers in her solo segments during the live performances of their songs. the only exceptions i recall are a few studio choom dances and a handful of year-end award show performances where they weren't using their usual dancers but some supplied to them
Actually, I just want to say that the POV was from that of the mistress/the person he was cheating with! She mentioned in a fansign that it’s not who we think, and that it’s actually from the POV of “a young person with long hair.” Still, the emotions apply. Wanting a married man that refuses to leave his wife and love you fully even though he keeps saying that he loves you.
Not devisive at all. It's moonbyul being moonbyul and we love her. She doesn't believe there should be a divide between masculine and feminine in music... its just music.
oh yeah, byul purposefully went with what is generally considered 'boy group' territory because that's her preferred style... she actually talked a bit about that in interviews, esp the one with jae jae (if you know who she is), where she said she doesn't believe there should be a dividing line between 'boy group' music and 'girl group' music... everyone should be able to do whatever they want. she also said to expect more like this from her in the future as for the mv itself, each outfit represented a different aspect of her persona, with the two main ones actually being mentioned in the lyrics. 'moonstar the defender' is the one dressed all in white, talking about wanting to protect everybody she knows, while the all black outfit you (and many moos) loved was 'monster the devourer', her darker impulses. (also note that even here she does something against expected gender roles, since protecting/defending is usually expected of men while women tend to be the ones expected to need defending) the outfit only seen a few times, where she's got both black and white and is pulling on (or being pulled by) ropes is another important aspect... she explained this one to a fan that asked her to sign a picture of her in the outfit. this one is the her struggling to keep a balance between the former two the brown outfit is 'regular' or 'neutral' her, the natural version everyone sees from the outside she never did explain what the soldier outfit meant, or if she did tell a fan, they never told it to anyone else, to my knowledge (since she really did only explain the rope one to a single person, precisely because they loved it, had the picture, and asked) i believe pretty much every moo celebrated this song's release precisely because it was so groundbreaking and shattered gender conventions, something moonbyul has been all about pretty much all her life she went so far as to hire a choreographer named kasper, who was known for creating boy group choreo, especially for exo. she was the first female artist he ever worked with and afterwards he had nothing but praise for byul and her backup dancers, both male and female (they released an all-female performance video of the song). and it obviously wasn't just lip service since he came back a month later to create the choreo for "absence" the live stages for this song are quite interesting, too, in that she changed her attitude, her movements somewhat based on the outfit she wore for each performance, as if she was that aspect of herself at the time. it's easiest to see in the monster outfit, where her movements were a lot more chaotic and untamed ...also, alexa did a dance cover of the song that is very much worth checking out oh, and i forgot to mention... she actually used members of both oneus and onewe for backing vocals in the song, one was the deeper male voice you heard occasionally, the other (take a wild guess who) was the crazy amazing higher tones
For the fun fact: Moonbyul wrote Absence completely based on a drama she was watching called "The World Of The Married", angst queen. If you want to hear a bit more of Moonbyul's vocal, I suggest Snow, The Lady from Bumkey she featured on and A Miracle From 3 Days Ago.
Although I dont love everything about RBW (they are a company after all) I do appreciate how much creative liberty they seem to give their artists. Moonbyul was very much going for a style that is normally labeled “masculine” and she said in various interviews that she wishes to eliminate that divide within music. As for getting new solo stuff from her, if im not mistaken in recent fansigns she said there might be something coming for early next year! So not super far off in time.
While Eclipse isn't something I listen to very often, I absolutely love how genuine it feels to Moonbyul. And she has a lot of other songs like ILJIDO, Snow, and Mirror, that I listen to regularly. I'm a huge fan of Mamamoo's solo projects because of the fact that they're able to be 100% themselves. Those releases always feel very special to me.
What I love about Mamamoo's solo releases is that they get to freely show the kind of music and concept that they genuinely want to do. Moonbyul took a risk with going with a style that's often considered 'masculine' but it's what she prefers and is more comfortable with, despite the fact that it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea and I love that about her. I don't know if you recognized those ethereal high notes at 5:27 but yeah, it's Yonghoon and some of the other backup vocals are ONEUS Seoho's too. As for Absence, it's my favorite among all her solos! It's so beautiful. It shows how great of a vocalist and lyricist Moonbyul is. And I love how the choreography for this is lyrical too. The contrast between these two songs really shows off her versatility. Can't wait for you to get to all their solos!
I love fun fact about both song. And while Moonbyul so cool with whit&black tone also dark vibe of Eclipse, in behind to scene of this MV she just sleepy cute hamster. she work so hard for this song. Had to lern choreography winthin 4 or 3 day before shooting and not enought sleep
At the time of release of "Eclipse" i don't rember the fandom being split a the vast majority of us love it.She didn't do a Boy concept. She just do a Moonbyul song, it's truly herself not something she does for the style. I think Eclipse was a bit ahead of it's time for the General Public in Korea but she still got a big success with her album. A lot of people already mentionned other vocal focus song from moonbyul so i'll just say that AleXa did a dance cover of Eclipse AND YOU NEED TO SEE IT !!!
There's so many sides of her, I love that all of her solos are still sides of her! It shows off how talented she is as an artist and I really enjoy her style, songs, voice, and lyrics ! I'm excited for you to see Iljido, Moon Movie, and Say Yes! of course without saying, Selfish is a must
Moonbyul actually even went a step further. This song was based on the POV of a mistress from the drama “The World of the Married.” An uncommon POV, wouldn’t you say? Moonbyul mentioned in a fansign call that it’s about a young person with long hair. Only the mistress fits the bill. She’s in love with a married man who keeps saying he loves her and yet continues to put off leaving his wife. He’s trying to hold onto both. That’s why the mistress comes to fear his words and doesn’t feel like he’s really always with her even though they’re lying in bed side by side. I like that it’s a more unique perspective than what we usually get. I could listen to Absence and it’s instrumental all day tbh.
Fun fact for Mamamoo soloist albums the smallest the member the tallest the album is, and they are all short 🤣 well you saw it too Mamamoo has energetic song too they don't have a strong "feminine" sounds if we talk about visual we can say Moonbyul had always been more "masculine" style not always but typically here it's amplified but i think moos loved it because it was totally her and the fact that she did it going against the typical it's iconic and that's what Mamamoo does best
I really enjoyed your reaction. Mamamoo is a very successful group in both their group and solo activities. Each member has their own color and none stands out more than the other, they all shine. If you want to hear more vocals from Moonbyul, I really hope you see one of Moonbyul's cover song, "Trying to Say Goodbye", her vocal here is so beautiful
HI, thanks for reacting, these songs is really her style but i personally love "snow", "a miracle 3 days ago" and the cover "let's go see the star" more If you want to see her crazy vocal, can check her cover "trying to say goodbye"
Whenever I watch Eclipse, I always feel so proud of Byul and the choices she made for her solo. Love the chorus on Absence so much too! That rising melody matched with the painful lyrics always gets me. Excited for you to check out more of their solos. Mamamoo’s so so so good together, but they’re also amazing as soloists. I’m so proud to be a moomoo. Discovering them a few years back was the best thing that happened to me at that time
While I do like Eclipse, it's not something I listen to often. Not 100% my taste. Absence on the other hand I love. I much prefer that song in terms of her vocals, the composition and the choreo.
Yay! Loved your reaction to these and I'm glad you enjoyed both songs! Eclipse was one of my most listened to songs last year because I would listen to it all the time whenever I got frustrated at my old job...which was frequent haha. Absence is absolutely gorgeous though and it completely blew me away the first time I heard it. Definitely got chills at the same part you did. Moonbyul has a lot of different sides to her and her music that we don't always get to see in Mamamoo's music, so that's part of the reason why I chose these particular songs this time around. Will probably request some of her other solo songs eventually :) Thanks for the awesome reaction!
Yessss!!! I loved Eclipse, Moonbyul really took on the “masculine” part like the dance and the song. I can’t explain it but Form of therapy did react to it and it explain things better than I could. But like it’s really Moonbyul. She looked like a ✨badass queen✨. And the scene were she like look the crown up to the moon, it was also an eclipse!! 🤩 (5:08) like it’s the same as (5:49)
Hi! Yonghoon and Seoho took part in the backing vocals for Eclipse. I'm guessing (not really sure) Seoho did the high part? :) Byul might have another solo project next year
Myyyy favorite rapper and dancer Moonbyul 😍❤️💓💓 love you Moonbyul 😍 my only one bias 🥰🥇 Moonbyul 😎😎😎🖤🤟🤟🤟🌋🌋🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇 thank you for reaction Moonbyul 🤟🤟🖤🖤😆😆😆🥰🤧🥰 please reaction more Moonbyul mv's please 🥺😍
I love how much you love Moonstar’s work. I’m excited for you to see some of solar’s solos, there’s also “it’s been a long time” which baby onewe are in. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TfGTtUPKY2M.html Thank you for doing some moonbyul solo stuff I’m so excited for you to listen to more of her solo work as she is just so multidimensional just like the other girls. You really do see why she belongs in Mamamoo and how she can hold her own as a vocalist aswell as everything else. Btw the photo book is epic!! She and RBW really did the most with her album
Yes! I love both songs. I agree with you that Absence is (for me) more listenable than Eclipse, but when I do listen to Eclipse it’s just 👌 I actually feel that all the solos of mmm members suit each one perfectly
I loved jour reaction ! I love your honesty I loved Eclipse but indeed it can get too much with times. Whereas I can listen to Absence & in my room on a daily basis over and over.
Her album was just awesome. All member’s solo songs are just amazing. I really love to listen to every song of Mamamoo. I recommend you You in my dream and I miss u /ost/ by Mamamoo
I hope one day you can check out Moonbyuls song Iljido (its a bside from her album) and it also has a performance video. One of my most favourite songs from her, lyrics relatable af and the dance video is so good!
Not to beat up on you but I beg to differ on a couple things. As far as I know moomoos universally love Eclipse, just like they love it when MMM does rock versions of their songs. It sounds like you think people listen to girl groups because they prefer softer sounding music. Maybe that's true for some people but imo soft vs hard is irrelevant in music, speaking as a former roadie and sound engineer for punk and hardcore bands. I listen to Mamamoo because I think their music is fantastic. You called Eclipse a boy group concept but I think it's a groundbreaking gender neutral concept. There have been plenty of bad girl, tough girl or badass bitch concepts by female idols but nothing quite like Eclipse, in which Moonbyul seems to ignore her gender altogether. She made several comments during promotions about not wanting a dividing line between masculine and feminine in music and I think that's what she achieved in this song and MV.
I think it depends on the person. Based on the comments to this video alone, there seem to be quite a few people who enjoy "Eclipse" but don't have it on repeat everyday. I'm someone who loves lighter fair along with the hardest stuff you can throw at me, but I have seen many others, including other reactors who just can't do more aggressive concepts. I'm all for this barrier breaking stuff, yet gender focused styles seem very much alive in Korean culture. Only recently has the "girl crush" wave hit and I don't even think we've seen many true gender neutral examples in that bunch. "Eclipse" and EVERGLOW's "First" fit that category imo though.
@@KpopPrince I listen to Eclipse regularly, along with the rest of her album. Last year I burned a cd that includes Dark Side of the Moon, Hwasa's Maria EP, Solar's Spit It Out and Mamamoo's Blue;S EP and it's become the one I listen to most often while driving. Of course kpop is very divided by gender, that's why Eclipse was groundbreaking. Female idols ignoring gender isn't a trend and isn't likely to become one but I think Moonbyul's example helped to expand the range of possibilities for women. I hadn't thought of First that way but if that's what Everglow had in mind then good for them. I'd put AleXa in that category but she's an American so kpop gender norms don't really apply to her. But none of this matters if an artist's music doesn't appeal to you, which is the case for me with Everglow and AleXa.
you speak my mind! i was watching this while wearing my SOAD t-shirt and i was like "huh? wait, what am i then gasps" lol and funny how one of the reasons i love mamamoo so much is because i despise "soft" K-Pop song with thin high-pitch voices lol edit: typos
@@bananagomm GGs with shrill voices are nails on chalkboard to my ears but I find most boy groups unlistenable too. The glossy production style & heavily compressed, auto-tuned and processed vocals in most kpop (and western pop) usually turns me off. Whether I listen to music that crunches hard as hell or softly turns me into a puddle of tears is just a matter of mood. But I thought his opinion was interesting because it was a totally different perspective than mine.
@@kudgeond755 Yup, truly not to beat up on him. Interestingly, I found that the majority of people around me who don't listen to kpop and only got exposed to the stereotypes of it always assume that I enjoy that kind of nails on chalkboard sound. And about the BG, yeah, same... that's why I honestly, for instance, don't really listen to ALL of ONEUS' songs, while TBONTB and Valkyrie (rock ver.) are the favorite ones. Sometimes I wish I could enjoy other types of sound, but oh well, to each their own I guess :))
hey i didnt know where else to ask this but in your patreon description it says it has red velvet level up on it but I've gone through the posts and I didn't see that you have done any of it? is that just wrong or are you going to start it soon?
I think I was using it as examples of the type of content I would want to do. At the time, Level Up Season 1 was one of the few reality series I had watched. I desperately want to continue and watch Season 2, but I just don't have many Reveluvs on my Patreon or RU-vid 😔. I'll probably say screw it and start S2 leading up to the comeback this month tbh
I have a love hate relationship with Eclipse bc after a while it just seems repetitive to me. There is one verse in total and most of the song was the chorus. I could listen to it once a month but I couldn’t listen to it on repeat
