There was confusion all around as Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced the wrong best picture winner at the 2017 Oscars- saying 'La La Land' had won when Moonlight was the actual winner.
@@rajend8 he tried showing the card to dunaway to be like yo this is wrong but she just says it bc shes like what r u doing. theyre also standing in front of like a zillion people so theres probably a lot a of pressure. the real mistake happened behind the scenes
@@drakelai3502 if it’s staged it won’t be a risk they now what they are doing, the oscars have been dead for a while so to get many fews they let something happen that will get people their attention, they always did things like that. I'm just imagining like 15 people's heads snapping up in management when he said "la la land" and suddenly they've sent people running across the building to sort it out
Let's face it. The producer of La La Land did everything in his hands to make it look at least awkward for everyone involved as possible. Much respect!
@@sippysipsip idk if your comment is sarcasm or not… if not let me explain. if you haven’t heard about will smith slapping chris rock, will smith said after that “KEEP MY WIFE’S NAME OUT OF YOUR FRICKING MOUTH” so yrah my comment was a joke to that. hopefully what you’re saying is sarcasm tho😭
@@ewew9684 Chris rock replies "It was a GI Jane joke." after and will smith repeats. I've seen the clip, I was just trying to quote it back lol 😅. That's why my reply has quotation marks.
The producer for "La La Land" did the right thing by holding the correct card up to the cameras. That action eliminated a lot of phony conspiracy theories.
Jonathon Myska Did you miss the part where he snatched the card when Warren was opening the new envelope? I understand being upset but the others didn’t react like that. It wasn’t Warren’s fault he was given the wrong card.
When Kimmel, in his nervousness, tries to keep "La La Land" up there, joking, "Aren't there enough awards to go around?" the La La Land producer saved that moment of diminishing the winners by just saying, "I look forward to handing this [statue] to my 'Moonlight' friends." We know Kimmel was joking, but it's like, no, Jimmy, we're not even jokingly "sharing" the win just because of a mistake. Moonlight won. Feel sorry for everyone in this. No one's fault.
@@tagaway6173 It's not in this video, but on the following Monday night, Kimmel said on his show that Denzel was yelling to Kimmel, "Barry!" and pointing to Barry to encourage Kimmel to make sure there was a transition to the real winners. Denzel knew the speech would break the confusing dead space, I'm sure. Kimmel admits he just didn't know what to do, but it's nice and lighthearted. He recaps it funny.
I feel so so bad for Warren, it wasn't his fault at all he even tried to understand and show the card to Faye... he felt so embarrassed when he finally got it
For those who don't know what actually happened, here it is: There were two Price Waterhouse people present, one on each side of the stage in order to accomodate presenters who would show up on one side or the other. Each held a full set of envelopes. As one would hand as envelope to a presenter, the other would place the duplicate in his briefcase. The award just before Best Picture was Best Actress. That went to Emma Stone. The Price Waterhouse guy with the duplicate, however, failed to put his duplicate back in the briefcase. So, he held both that envelope and the Best Picture envelope in his hand as Beatty approached him to get the envelope for the Best Picture. He (the accountant) then showed Beatty the easiest way to open the envelope. During this demonstration, the envelopes got switched. So, when Beatty open his on stage, it said "Emma Stone La La Land." Beatty was confused and just focused on the La La Land. So, the blame rests with the accountant. As for Beatty, should he have had the presence of mind to say " Hey, we have a problem here. This is the wrong envelope"? Maybe. But its a high pressure situation, so I'm not going to presume to say that he bears the blame and whether his age factors in. The blame clearly rests with the Price Waterhouse guy.
All of that is right. But actually Warren didn’t announce anything. He got confused by the card and froze, so he tried to show it to Faye Dunaway who then proceeded to read out La La Land.
It was very uncomfortable to watch. Felt really bad and embarrassed for the La La Land crew but they handled the situation with extreme class and grace. Props to them!
Stephen James “I’m going to continue to make this moment about me and do the LITERAL JOB of the HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS on stage next to me.” What a chap? For what? Giving back an award he didn’t win, acting like a douche to a legend that could be his grandpa and then acting like he was graciously giving them his award?
@evilSWA - beyond pandora films why don’t you go ahead and win best picture only to find out you didn’t actually win it. Come back to the Internet when you’ve grown a brain
@Jeepman89 he does actually they both were on the road together promoting their films and were very close. If you ask me how I know this look it up, ask an oscar insider
Jordan gave a speech all about humility and kindness, and a few seconds later he gave an unbelievably powerful demonstration of how to actually ACT out of humility and kindness.
Jordan Horowitz deserves a lot of credit for handling the situation as best he could. He announced Moonlight had won, grabbed the card and showed it for a long time so the cameras could focus on it, and was extremely humble and gracious as he showed real joy for Moonlight to have won.
100000% agree! My blood boils every time ppl give him crap for snatching the card from Beatty. He was up there and stood up like a pro and accepted defeat like a pro! Kudos to him!
It was also unclear to him how the error had been made. At this point, he probably thought Warren had goofed and was understandably angry! But even, so, he pulled this off with much grace and humility.
@@user-ir1vt6gr6h If you listen closely at 3:11 you would hear that he actually did apologize to Warren when he said "Oh Warren, I'm sorry".. At 3:17 you'd see that Warren had the card again. So he DID apologize off screen and handed Warren back the card.. Not only that, also notice how he held the card high up to make sure that the camera zooms in on it to show the world the correct winner, instead of trying to hide the fact that they lost.. Most sore losers out there would have wanted to hide that. This guy was an absolute class act under a very painful situatuon and handled defeat like a pro. I sincerely hope to god that he wins this award one day. I wish we had more people like him.
I still put this one on top, because Smith/Rock wasn't about the Oscars... this was all about the Oscars, and was literally the biggest mix-up one could have at the ceremony, for Best Picture. There are so many interesting moments in the clip, as you see different people realize something is wrong, the audience reactions, everything about it. It's more rewatchable than the Zapruder film. I watch this clip every year; the Smith/Rock thing just depresses me.
Gives me anxiety lol. I'm a show producer, and while I've certainly never produced anything this big... I've definitely had moments where I am standing in the wings watching something go wrong on stage and I have to figure out how to stop it before it gets worse. Freaking out is definitely the right term.
@@PowerDiva Please, lets all pretend like some goblin in hollywood comes out of the Oscar hole every year and prints out the winners... it was set up this way. A "humiliation ritual" of sorts, for the people who worked on Moonlight. Who printed the card that said "emma stone moonlight?" Did no one see that before they put it in the envelope ? This is a humiliation ritual, hollywood style.
@@blackleague212 so if you actually read up on the details of this, you'll learn exactly how it happened. But first you have to know how this whole process works. There are actually two people in charge, one on each side of the stage and each of them have a set of printed envelopes for the winners. So there are two sets of envelopes out there with identical results on each one. Emma Stone won Best Actress a few moments before this happened, and the envelope that was read with her name came from the person on the left side of the stage. Which means the guy on the right side of the stage still had a Best Actress envelope that said Emma Stone inside. When it was time for Best Picture... this envelope was handed to the presenters on their way to the stage, instead of the Best Picture results. The card said Emma Stone - Lala Land... but on the outside it said Actress in a Leading Role and no one noticed until after it was read on air. If you pause this video at the right moment you can see that. You can also see producers coming onto the stage to look at the card, realizing what happened and then bringing the actual results onto the stage. This is what the producer of Lala Land holds up to the camera as the cast of Moonlight is coming up to the stage. It was a royal f*ck up from the people who are supposed to be in charge of making sure f*ck ups don't happen. It was not an intentional thing by the Oscars... because the Oscars do not control that part of the ceremony. It's actually a completely separate company in charge of the results and the envelopes. So they have no reason to screw Moonlight. They have no stake in the results. I'm not sure why anyone would want to humiliate Moonlight anyway - but if that is the case, as you suggest it didn't work. The only people humiliated by this snafu are the Oscars and perhaps Lala Land for winning, then getting it taken away. You're looking for a villain, in a situation where it was simply an unfortunate mistake, brought on by carelessness.
[Gawdammit, I may never get another chance to make The Speech, so...]"Ladies and Gentlemen of the Academy, it is my pleasure to accept..." [reality--oh well!]
Very confusing situation but really well handled and resolved by all on the stage. Kisses for Warren Beatty who had the worst part but did all he could to straighten things out!
daile alexander thanks 4 saying it girl!!! I'm like where the shit talking & bashing that they did to Steve but when these Europeans do it oh it's just a simple mistake...
He was trying to take control of the situation. He wasn’t rude. Maybe a little frustrated in the moment, his mannerisms were quick, but probably because he was confused. He’s also a big guy and his presence reads off as a little buff. He handled it pretty good considering. He seemed a little mad at the situation but was very gracious and supportive of Moonlight.
+Underquaker Nope, you're just a psychopath who doesn't understand how human beings actually experience emotions. This was an unprecedented screw-up by AMPAS and everyone on stage handled it as best they could under the circumstances.
I only actually watched “La La Land” because of the absolute class they all showed during this, and it was well worth it. A positive from a negative, and both wonderful films.
The moment where the dude grabs the card and says MOONLIGHT BEST PICTURE and the Cameraman cuts to the close up of the card was just iconic. Epic moment.
@@roybatty9663 Agreed. It was actually incredibly rude. Warren was so embarrassed and shaking already- and the aggressive way he snatched the card from his hands... you can see Warren was shaken up a tad through nerves and embrrassment.
@@sallourussell2271 I think he just wanted to clear it up as quickly as possible. He had a right to be pissed off to be fair. It didn't really look like it was meant to be rude to Warren, he just wanted to quickly show the card so people would believe him. Personally I think he was very professional how he handled that. He had every right to put the oscar on the ground and storm off. Perhaps in the heat of the moment he grabbed it a little too roughly, but with emotions running like that, it didn't seem malicious, just frustration most likely.
Wow, they let the man deliver a whole speech and have the proudest moment of his life in front of millions of people before they told him it was a mistake. That must have been such a painful, embarrassing thing to go through, and he handled it with the utmost respect, holding up the Moonlight card himself. Props to him, but wow I'm sorry he had to go through that
Катя Лищина oh please don't be so dramatic. A musical about white people with jazz music (black music) is also a popular thing. White people kill themselves all the time, even the rich ones.
Miss Universe debacle was the most cringeworthy. Especially when the Colombian girl had to stoop so that the crown could be yanked from head and placed in the Filipino girl's head. Chile the embarrassment!! Lol after gliding and waving across the stage, believing she was the most beautiful... "Mirror Mirror on the wall"
Every time I watch this my heart sink a little for Warren Beatty! He really tried to figure out and prevent this mistake from happening. Hate that they said “read the wrong thing”. It’s unfair for him. His sorry guilty face really saddens me. You can tell he took it personally and felt bad when it wasn’t even his fault to begin with!
blackfemme theirs* and it would be awkward to be handed something you think is yours but it's really not. You give your thanks and everything and find out while you're on stage that you did not win. Embarrassing for La La crew more I think.
In a survey that was done recently with tribal people living in remote islands in amazon and Andaman Nicobar islands the tribes had responded, though they don't speak english or watch Hollywood, they felt this was the most awkward moment in the human history, where everyones guts came out of their mouths. However they gave credit to every one that straightened it out eventually.
I feel so terrible for every person from lala land. What a horrible public humiliation. I still can’t get over this. I hope they all got personal apologies.
Since Beatty admits that he read "Emma Stone in 'La La Land,'" wouldn't you think he'd have realized that he had the wrong envelope? He certainly stared at it long enough. Dunaway just glanced at it, saw "La La Land," and announced it as the winner.
@@adikaputra8471 You can't really see it at the angle of this video. He thought someone was hurt during the initial panic, but when he realized it was just because of a mixup he started laughing
No one is talking about that guy, Producer Fred Burger. Before he even started his speech, he knew there was some kind of issue. He shouldn't have started talking. He came off as very entitled.
Yeah but she makes a good point though, one that even professional movie critics agree with, which is that La La Land tops moonlight in every considerable way, it's not even close.
The way whoever the hell he is was trying "Can't we all just get Oscars." And the director for LaLa Land was like "nah, my friends earned this." THATS WHAT YOURE SUPPOSED TO DO. ❤
completely agree, but just so you that wasn't la la lands director, idk who the ppl who spoke were ahahaha but la la lands director was damien chazelle, i guess they planed it so that he would speak last, but ofc, didnt get to
This is still ridiculous. This wasnt stopped until the third person was giving an acceptance speech. Someone right near the stage shouldve been there or maybe contact the production room in a few seconds to say something isnt right. This took over 2 minutes- which isnt long but longer than needed
The auditors who handed out the envelopes were found responsible and are never able to work there again. TLDR: they simply failed to sound the klaxon which would kickstart the damage limitation process. Story detailed here:- www.theguardian.com/film/2017/mar/01/oscars-president-accountants-banned-best-picture-envelope
Your expectations aren't in line with reality. The fact that it was even picked up whilst the others were on stage surprises me. You don't really know much about the realities of event management. It takes time for realisations to be made and for action to actually happen.
Very few people knew who the correct winner was supposed to be, it was all kept a secret. There were only a couple people in that building that realized there was a mistake
@@chuckychuck8318 it was the first film with an all black cast to win best picture. i think they just wanted to capture the reactions of black actors and actresses in such a milestone in the film industry.
Damn!! Faye Dunaway did the best disappearing act that no magician has ever done and that is disappearing from everyone's memories because nobody remembers that she was the one that read the card and everyone is blaming Warren Beatty
Krolliox either way it wouldn't have been her fault either .. they only read the card that's given .. someone handed them the wrong card. so they have to read it
if it had been manchester by the sea by mistake jimmy kimmel would have taken an oscar away from matt damon since he was a producer of manchester by the sea
@abba & peach @abba & peach No it doesn't fit the moment. It shows a fundamental lack of character and immaturity. That's why Warren didn't do it back.
"WHAT DID YOU DO?!" Seriously Jimmy? Poor Warren. He was given the wrong card and he even tried to indicate to say to Faye that it was wrong. And she read it out.
Yeah I thought that was a bit of a cruel joke. You could see warren was feeling guilty even though it wasn’t his fault, and it wasn’t necessary for Jimmy to make him feel even worse again for something he didn’t do wrong himself.
after Faye announces la la land as the winner...Warren tries to correct her.... 0:19-0:22 you can hear Warren Beatty telling Faye Dunaway "it says to Emma Stone" she says "What?"
Yes, I've heard that. Besides, Warren knew that something was wrong, he grabbed in the envelope searching for another card, just to be sure. But that stupass woman read it aloud!
“I’m going to be really proud to hand this to my friend’s from Moonlight.” Such a statement absolutely made my day. So much humility in that man that it brings a tear to my eye :,)
He's busy trying to make light of the situation with tasteless and ill-timed jokes, rather than just keeping his mouth shut and getting off stage. I don't really care what his role was that night, he should've just waited till it was his time to speak again rather than try to insert himself where he wasn't needed.
