@johanes alberto No, WHITE MAN! We want to go watch it in cinema to SUPPORT OUR BLACK BROTHERS & SISTERS. We'll only pirate movies by white people if we'll even watch them at all. Thanks.
I know Mahershala Ali is getting a lot of credit for his acting, but people need to not forget to give credit to Andre Holland. I loved Andre Halland's acting in the movie.
Everyone is right but I'll butt in and defiantly say I think people are rly counting out Naomie Harris and to a point Ashton Sanders as well especially when they played the most emotionally traumatised / socially beleaguered characters. Not surprised but still disappointed. They were truthful, transparent, gorgeous, AND excellent while the others were excellent all by themselves, by all means
His portrayal of adult Kevin was refreshing... mainly because he came to a point in his life where was ready to “BE HIMSELF” and not worry about what everyone else thought of him. Kevin came to grips that he always LOVED Chiron and was finally ready to embrace it. The timing of the song “One Step Ahead” playing in the diner when their eyes met was brilliant.
I love that this was a very subtle and nuanced film. Andre's explanation of what masculinity represents to him is utterly eye-opening. Simple yet poignant.
Many Asian and Oriental people have their own huge Homophobias in their own culture, same thing, the image of what is Masculine and expected to marry and have even MORE kids and over populate.
Eiko M Also echoing the asmr comment which made me remember recently wondering why there aren't enough black men in asmr, considering their deep voices and beard (coz I love beard scratching asmr), sigh.
Loved Moonlight and Holland was fantastic in it. Best movie of the year, in my opinion. I love what he said here too, right on point. I understand where our historical image of masculinity comes from, but Black communities still need to become more open about what masculinity is and allow personal interpretations of it to exist within our landscape. I grew up gay in a Southern Baptist household and, needless to say, I was so repressed and filled with self hate that I didn't find my way to coming out until I was almost 30. There's just no reason for that kind of shame to be heaped onto people at such a young age. It ruins lives and even ends some. It's past time for the Black church, in particular, to stop the ignorance. Also, if you haven't already seen it, check Andre out in The Knick on Cinemax. It's one of the best shows of recent years.
D LG lol OMG THAT'S where I first saw him. he's great in that also. Sadly I'm behind on the later seasons and have some catching up to do. I love your comment also btw.
+Wolfpack That's the dumbest, most ignorant thing I've read today and given the level of inane stupidity on the internet, that's saying something! Just so you know, homosexuality has always existed across all cultures, even many members of the animal kingdom exhibit homosexual behavior. If you weren't so committed to such absurdly ignorant beliefs and were open minded, you'd know better. In any case, it is most definitely your right to be ignorant, even willfully so, but don't expect a lot of folks to validate your nonsense, in this day and age.
I have to check out more of your movies. To me Kevin was Chiron's only hope in this world and you delivered the expectation. It was so satisfying with your calm, quiet, but firm presence. Thank you Andre for the Kevin you bring to the screen. Good job.
"Vulnerability is power". Well-blended concepts and film extractions translated gracefully for the common man to understand.....I would hope we are more a sophisticated people to accept what he is saying, too. He nailed this. Beautiful, Andre. Beautiful.
I am neither black nor male, and this movie absolutely spoke to me. It's universal and it's genius. Watching this makes me miss The Knick, Andre Holland was incredible in it, I wish it would've gone on :(
@scross Saw MEDICINE FOR MELANCHOLY. Saw the MOONLIGHT in theaters 5 times and bought the dvd. And cant wait to see IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK. Tell me about love. I think I am in love forever.
The movie was great. I love Andre's explanation of when a black man reveals his homosexuality that it makes others afraid that people will view them in that manner. That's an amazing revelation!
A PROFOUNDLY moving film! It deftly challenges the "performance of masculinity" we as Black males are called to enact...For many of us masculinity becomes a mask--a warrior's mask worn whether one likes it or not... Moonlight bears WITNESS to the discontents of this behavior and BOLDY offers an alternative that proves to be --at once--more balanced...
I agree with him totally.......He could not have said it any better!!!.... What does masculinity really mean in our community???????..Gender and Sexual identity have never challenged our masculinity or manhood.....
Masculinity in communities in the USA is different from how its viewed globally. Whats the real reason behind putting so many black Men in dresses and parading all over media? I don't see white Men being portrayed the same way. Same for black women in movies in lesbian roles. The black woman is always the aggressor in those roles. Wake up people.
I loved this film. Some people have said that it is about homosexuality, but it really is about vulnerability and masculinity. So thank you for pointing that out.
His character eased so much of the breaks in my heart. He was trying so well to get Chiron to come around and he succeeded. His character deserved an Oscar.
Probably the best interview so far! I love how open-minded and comfortable he seems to be when talking about subjects that are sensitive for some people. He's immaculately intelligent and it was such a pleasure listening to him speak 👏👏
Amazing movie just watched it and loved it the actors are so moving they quite literally tapped into the core emotions for me. I haven't had a film do that in awhile
Saw this post the oscars. Holland's performance was grossly overlooked. Incredible amount of sensitivity, nuance, strength and ability to portray the multiple facets of true manhood. Outstanding!
Masculinity and sexuality are two different things, yet many people act out they think is expected of them.. In the 80's I went to a gay bar in Texas; I was just visiting.. Except for the lack of females.. I had no idea it was as gay bar.. All the guys acted like Broke Back Mountain.. straight, 'normal'.. etc.. In NYC gay men often think they have to 'flame' and act weird, and be a freak.. Personally I have learned that let people express themselves the way they want.. Hopefully along the way they will learn. I think this movie and how well everyone acted was great.. It had a lot of nuance, it didn't go for shock value. Andre you put it out there really well..
Beautiful. It's so important for one to truly identify with one's self. Andre Holland's explanation was so inspiring and strong willed. You are who your are, make the best of it, be proud and love yourself. Self defeat should never be an option.
He has a very strong point about reglion being a major block for not accepting gay ppl, even though Christianity is all about love and acceptance. Just goes to show you they are Hypocrites
I agree... Us blacks are not going to make it. If we don't allow acceptance, repair, and growth in our communities. Men, if you are not clear-headed enough to lead, let someone who does take way. I'm getting sleepy thinking about this.
For a movie that won the Oscar, I haven't seen the actors in any prominent films. It saddens me that these great actors are underutilized because of religion.
This man is the hottest man in all of Hollywood, heck all of the world. And he never ages, wow. And what a talent! Had he been white, he would've won a million Oscars, SMH Hollyweird. He is such a great talent and I always look forward to the projects he picks.
Great, great film. Relatable on so many levels. However, I never understood why many gay black men talk about masculinity being challenged in the black community as if that's not something challenged to all gay people once they reveal that they're gay. As a white gay male, I've felt compelled many times go prove my masculinity to straight guys who appear more "softer" than me. This isn't a race thing, rather, a gay thing. The gay community itself places such an importance on hyper masculinity.. idk! Sexy and intelligent man though
Great André, and great movie, but the end of the film was a little bit disapionting for me. And when I read the script it was that what I was missing. And I would like to asked André if it was a "bridge too far", for him and Trevante, to do such a scene as a straight man.
The substance of this interview sets forth a very different message from the homosexual role in the show, and from the agenda that wants to make black men wear dresses and accept men masquerading as women acceptable as women. Also, why is the black man and black woman always the poster child for these alternative lifestyles?
As a gay person this interview makes me just so incredibly sad. The initital question addresses homophobia which he dismissis, arguing we are more sophisticated than that. It is obvious he has't experienced much being met with the unease, uncomfort, harassment or violence from stranger on the street, fam or friends. He answers from such an intellectual and blind point of view that he just erased gay history. He basically reproduces the tendency to ignore homophobia and it's very real consquences. This is no way equips me to have a talk with people who aren't "sophisticated enough" to rise above. Like let's actually have these conversations and not sweep them under the rug. On the other hand, when he talks about issues of masculinity there is this three dimensionality he claims in the first minute to want to portray.
Does whoever posted this video know that Prager University, just put an advertisement about Black people using the "black card" before this clip played? Really?!?!
