Moonwalker is an experimental film from the anthological musical and scientific fantasy genres starring the singer Michael Jackson, released in 1988 during his Bad World Tour tour, containing excerpts from various clips of the star. Rather than presenting a continuous narrative, the film expresses fandom influence and innocence through a selection of short films about Michael Jackson, several of which are music videos for songs from Jackson's Bad album. The name of the film comes from the dance technique known as the moonwalk, for which Jackson was known for performing it in his performances.
Moonwalker's release was originally scheduled to coincide with that of Jackson's 1987 Bad album. During Moonwalker's theatrical release, Michael Jackson was also starting the Bad World Tour, his first tour as a solo artist. The film was released in theaters in Europe and South America, but Warner Bros. canceled plans for a broad theatrical release on Christmas 1988 in the United States. Moonwalker was released on home video in the United States and Canada on January 10, 1989, as soon as the Bad World Tour ended (the tour was supposed to end before that, but its closure was postponed due to a slight vocal problem with Michael, causing it continued only after the last week of January 1989).
By April 17, 1989, the home video release of the film in the United States had managed to sell more than eight hundred thousand copies of the film; for this feat, Moonwalker was honored with a certification of 800,000 copies sold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). In the UK, Moonwalker has been certified nine times with Platinum. Moonwalker was released on VHS and stayed at number one on the Billboard video chart for 22 weeks. [
