Moose Burgers in Paradise + Fly fishing Gulf Hagas, Maine (Tailgate Cooking)

Today I’m headed out to Gulf Hagas otherwise known as the grand canyon of Maine to explore the area and of course go fishing. Overall the fishing was pretty slow today. Although I did manage to catch a few smallmouths out of the river I never managed to catch a brook trout. So I found a place to camp for the night and instead of having fish I luckily brought along some moose meat and cooked up some moose burgers on the bed of my truck for dinner.

I had moose sliders the other day. I formed the meat into cupcake pan and filled them with mozzarella and bacon! Very delicious!

Great video! Moose, venison, elk... I'll take it over beef any day. I'm all in on the asparagus. That's a first class meal right there! Yeah, the humidity is tough back east along with the dang black flies! 👍

Yeah I tried some smallmouth the other week 👌 it was great little more firm then largemouth but still pretty flaky I could see it being a great fried fish

It doesn't get any better than moose meat and especially burgers. They are lean but if you use an egg it helps to hold them together when cooking. For the asparagus if you bend them until they break you will get rid of the "woody" bottom sections and be left with the maximum yield of good section. Good luck on the moose hunt, we have 2 tags and I'm itching to fill the freezer

Never caught much down low you gotta cross at the hermitage walk upstream first deep pool is about 1/4 mile up

@@MainelyOutDoors Not the biggest fish there anymore I won't lie used to go there 20 years ago when I was a teenager catch 16" brookies now a 12"er is a good catch. Beautiful spot though!

The fish you thought was a cub, was actually a fallfish. They fight just like trout. And they're good fried. I have a catch and cook video, on fallfish.

I had my first moose burger in Greenville Me. Very good not gamey at all . We have a camp at Wilson Pond, love the North woods of Maine. Great videos! Keep them coming. 👍

Exactly catching fish is just a bonus. We have zone 2, my old stomping grounds should be able to get one no problem

@@MainelyOutDoors Zone 2 is a great zone. All across the top of the state is good. I am most familiar with 4, 1, 6 up that way. I hunt mostly 7 for moose but have also hunted 19 and 28. I have fished all through the NMW over the years

I hope you will fish the gorge at Gulf Hagas. I’ve always been curious about it but now can’t walk far enough to try it. If you want to try more smallie fishing, I recommend trying the West Branch of the Penobscot, East Branch or Dolby Flowage below Millinockett. The fishing is fabulous from a canoe using streamers or poppers. Don’t eat your catch though due to pollutants from former paper mills upriver. There are smallies upwards of 5 pounds & the fishing can be fast & furious if the time is right. I usually fish for salmon & trout above town but if they are being persnickety, smallmouths provide a welcome alternative.

Thanks for the tips I did fish the gorge a bit but because it rained the next day I couldn’t do as much because of a fear of slipping or getting rim rocked I’m definitely going back one day I need to find out how it is down there.

Another great video! I had the same problem around the Bangor area with bass and chub in the streams and rivers, I think the water was too warm in July when we had that summer heat finally settle in. I did manage a some trout in KIW but I was using garden tackle and had to walk a long ways through some really thick woods. Also I wouldn't mind seeing a gear rundown as I am debating getting into this type of thing myself. You have inspired me to attempt to film and edit our ruff grouse hunt next month but all I have is my cell phone for now.

You should definitely get into it its a fun hobby and ends up being much like a diary. I'll put out a gear video this winter to go over the set up ive ended up with so far to help you out. Dont worry about only have a cell phone the cameras are quite good now and the most important thing is learning how to edit and film yourself. Looking forward to that grout hunt. Good luck!

@@MainelyOutDoors As luck would have it the weather didn't cooperate and I couldn't take the chance of destroying my phone. Will have to come up with a plan for Ice Fishing or do a late season Grouse hunt. Thinking about getting the GoPro Hero 7 Black if it drops in price.

Got a river like that in nh where I could catch hundreds of little smallmouth on the fly a day and there’s also trout and salmon

Nice vid, EXCEPT, very misleading title. What happened to Gulf Hagas? You went as far as the old Katahdin Iron Works kiln but never made it to Gulf Hagas itself. If you had, you would most likely have caught brook trout as well as salmon. ( And experienced some of the most impressive scenery in the state). I've been there several times in the past myself. About due for another visit.
