Moose hunting in Sweden , Norway and Finland has got long and extraordinary traditions. In fact for as long as mans history in the Scandinavian countries.
The moose has mainly been important for early man`s survival during harsh winter conditions.
Today the hunting for moose is big industry in Scandinavia and around 100 000 moose are shot every year....

Very good film! These are allways nice and entertaining to watch. Could someone tell me what happened 12:30-12:50?? Also the shot 13.08 is a bit risky in my opinion...

This is the most excellent film I have seen on the process of hunting, the total concept which included a brilliant safety instruction is totally absorbing. I look forward to the day when I will hunt a moose in Scandinavian.

Sure, moose hunting in Sweden is very well organized in most cases but it is very common to hunt by yourself and call for help when you've shot one. It is also common to cary a shotgun with you aswell to shoot whatever small game you'll find.

Some shocking shooting in this film. If people shot like that where i hunt they would not be allowed to hunt there again.

Its interesting to see traditions in different countries, and I've enjoyed hunting in many continents and countries. Having said that, I don't think I would last too long in a micro-managed situation like this. Draw for stand, stand here, don't move, wait until someone blows a horn. Could a typical Scandinavian hunter even find a moose by himself or would he be allowed to try? Just wondering.

Yes but you have to own the woods where you hunt (or ask the owner). Each "hunting team/land owner" gets a certain number of moose per year to shoot, it's the goverment who decides the amount of mooses that the hunters are allowed to shoot every year. So bottom line is that every hunting area got a moose-license to fill, the same for red stag, bear, lynx, wolf. If you own land and want to hunt by your self, go right ahead, but most hunters hunt in a "team" when it comes to the license-animals. But it's quite usual for a hunter just to let the dog go and find the moose, then try to get in shooting range. Sorry about the english, hope you get what I mean.

***** Thanks. Our system is sort of confusing, some of the province has draw seasons, some has over the counter tags, much of the land is public where anyone can go and owning private land doesn't grant the landowner a licence for his own moose if his land is in a draw area. My own situation is that I can seldom hunt the moose on my own land, but by moving a few kilometers north I can. White-tail deer, elk, bear, all fur-bearers and birds are OK. I am used to very unstructured hunting, there is little that would pass for organization.

You can hunt alone here aswell, but it's very common that a group of friends come together and cooperate to bring down more game then you probably could alone.

Watching the video with the sounds on makes more sense :D Allthought I can't understand what the hunter is thinking ( or not thinking at all) in situation with the calf and cow...

is the 6.5x55 really as popular for moose over there as people make it out to be?
@MrWildlifefilm
@MrWildlifefilm 10 лет назад
The reason why the 6,5 is so popular is because it is an old military round and so could be used in the old military/civil mausers. The 30-06 and 308 Winch are the most popular nowadays. Though we also use the 6,5 a lot on the winter hunt for capercaille.

Erik Fernström do you find the 6.5 swede to be as effective as the .308/06? providing proper lung shot/heart shot is made? Is there a minimum bullet weight that you legally have to use with the 6.5 Swede? 140gr - 160gr maybe? Sorry for all the questions! Im in Northern Alberta, Canada and have just bought a 6.5x55. I plan to use it as an all around rifle for deer - moose. over here when the 6.5 se is brought up as an adequate cartridge for Moose, the responses is, "the Swedes have been using it for 100 years to drop moose" we don't have a minimum bullet weight requirement here.. The smallest legal caliber to hunt moose with is a 243. I'm considering using the 120gr barnes ttsx or 130gr tsx as both penetrate deeper than even the 160gr bullets. the 308/06 are amongst the most popular here too.

1HeavyHitr To hunt big game like moose and bears in Sweden the 6,5 with a 9g bullet (138grain) has to bring 2700J in energy at 100m. Or a 10g bullet (2000J) has to deliver 2000J at 100m. Of course with a soft nose bullet. It has a flat trajectory and so is good on big game up to around 200m. As I said we even use the 6,5 a lot on small game like roe deer , beaver , fox and capercaille. But as always it´s all up to the one behind the gun. Myself I use the 30-06 on moose but wouldn´t criticise anyone that uses the 6,5 , as I know it is the most used round through history in Sweden on any game.

+Erik Fernström Is the 8x57mm still used much over there ? Question from another northern Albertan.

I would say this Video is quite old.. A lot of things are he same but a lot of things are modernised since this video was made. Some questionable shooting in this film. In my hunting team we have very much safety thinking. No posts so close to each other that its possible to shoot at one an other. But in southern Sweden there are smaller areals to hunt so that´s why they post so closei think.
