Mop flies get a bad rap. They are thought of as too simple, or "cheating" by some. However I think there are ways to make simple and effective mop flies that aren't what I would call cheating. This mop grub fly is very easy to tie, yet its not much different than some other flies using wrapped chenille that Ive seen. However I think the mop actually works better and is easier to tie on. To fish small creeks for sunfish, there probably isn't a better style fly, at least the trip I took. Being simple and quick to tie, it won't hurt too bad if you snag on a branch and loose one because you can tie dozens of them in an hour on the vice.
As you all know, I work closely withwww.risenfly.com and they have offered every one of my subscribers a discount. So go to their shop, and type in "McFly" at checkout for 15% off of anything you buy on their site.

I don't understand why people are against it unless they just dislike the simplicity. The material looks like the fingers some microfiber towels have.

I think most people are against something that is too easy because they want to think it’s complicated.

I have been a "lurker" watching your videos for some time and like your tying videos very much. I've been tying for years but am always seeking out new or different ways of doing things. I find your tying videos not overly long or detailed and I like the fly selections you have done. Even after tying for years, I still have questions about material selection such as deer hair/bucktails, maribou, peacock, various glues, chenille....the list goes on. You have covered some but keep them coming. I have to order a lot of materials online as there isn't a fly shop nearby and many shops near streams & lakes don't have a big selection.

Sweet looking fly. I Went to our local Dollar Tree and picked up a couple of those car wash mitts, in chartreuse and in blue. Now i need to try and tie some lol. Thanks for sharing with us

Awesome! Do you have much luck with blue?

@@McFlyAngler i have never tied mops before. The only fly i have ever tied was two San Juan Worms lol. Oh and i just looked and they are light blue and the other one is chartreuse. Do you have to use a bead on those or can you tie them with out the bead.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler Год назад
You can tie without a bead for sure! Well I’m glad your getting into tying though! Give this fly a try I think you will find them fun to tie and effective

@@McFlyAngler oh cool! Thanks it is going to be fun once i am able to get to it. Ryan from Risen gave me a little bit of dubbing to try and make a walts worm. So i have the easy ones to start out on.

@@McFlyAngler i got a couple sunfish on one of the San Juan worms i tied. Man was i a happy camper lol.

I only tie in the material at the head. It gives the worm a really good action. With a tungsten head it has a good jiggy action
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler Год назад
Yes you totally could do that. I was noticing short strikes even with the longer hook and tail tied in. The one Roger tied actually had a longer tail. Anyway I was thinking of getting it a bit shorter so there would be less short strikes. But for sure I see the benefit in many situations with that tail moving more

Cool leg material. For trib browns I tie a small clown egg for the head and go with a chartreuse or orange body. Blue or pink works too. Egg sucking hellgrammite?

I think there's still some purest mentality at play with the derision of mop flies. A pattern with 10 materials that takes an hour to tie just has to be better than a super cheap n easy pattern. And when did "it works too well" become a negative? And mop flies are mostly used for pan fish. Maybe that's beneath some anglers. To my not too experienced eye mop flies are similar to small zonkers with the mop replacing the rabbit strip.
@McFlyAngler
@McFlyAngler Год назад
I agree with you. And no they aren't "only used for pan fish" they are used for all sorts of fish with great results for sure. I believe all you said there. Works to well is not a negative. Im far from a purist at all. There are some guys who only fish streamers, some only dry flies. To me I will fish anything that catches me fish. Heck I even conventionally fish sometimes and even occasionally bait fish. Fishing is something we should do for fun, not as a status symbol. That being said, I do find the most enjoyment from catching fish on a dry fly as its fun seeing them hit the top. However all types of fishing are fun and I am with you. Do what is enjoyable.

Well maybe just the area you fish. Cause mop flies work amazingly most anywhere I’ve fished them.
