The point is that it does much more than that. Orel retaining his faith is meant to show how much purer he is than his fellow citizens, especially his family. His mother and father both came from abusive homes and they turned into cynical, abusive people themselves. Orel on the other hand, went through just as much, if not more, and never lost his faith in God or goodness. Moral Orel doesn't speak against Christianity so much as religious fundamentalism and only teaching one type of principle.
Sure... the same could be said for the Taliban and Daesh warriors, they spent their childhood in abusive and aprossive places, with extremist people, went through a lot of bad stuff and never lost their faith! How about that?
@@TheAllMightyGodofCod wtf are you talking about? none of that has anything to do with the show or the analysis of it by the OP. you’re just arguing against no one.
After Revernd Putty gets his act together, he gives a pretty touching sermon about how sometimes, it's good that you find "nothing" because it will lead to something greater than what you originally wanted. He uses Mary's not finding Jesus's body as an example.
If you had watched the show, you would have realized that one of the messages of the show is that religion can be a wonderful, helpful thing, as it was for Orel. One of the morals of this show is that it's just religion, it's horrible people who twist religion into their own means.
I don't wanna get into the whole binary "christianity good vs christianity bad" debacle since in practice that argument rarely leads to any enlightenment on either side. I just want to say that the Church can't be so easily parted from The Word itself since that institution spread it across the world. The political finagling that christian evangelists have done throughout the centuries have colored our base understanding of the text so much that we now have to pry it away from their worldview in order to wring anything good out of it. Yes, people do twist religion to their own ends, but that religion in turn goes on to twist the people back. It's a chicken and egg situation. The sin of taking the lord's name in vain begins a generations' long cycle of abuse that rots the institution to the point of either revolution, reformation, or abandonment. In light of this, I don't think it's appropriate to see this as an issue of "horrible people" more than "horrible actions". It's what folks do that matters, not what they are. A bad person's always gonna be terrible, but you can stop someone from doing harm. This way, the perversion of the Church can be a thing that can be resisted and maybe even stopped one day instead of an innate quality to Christianity itself.
@@Sleepy12ftPanda It can be really hard to tell if it's the religion corrupting the people or the other was around. The last year or so my eyes got opened quite a lot to just how much more common the fanatical cult-ish denominations are and those do have a way of twisting people's minds with their thought control and various ways of entrapment. At the same time what I'm seeing in my own Catholicism are Christian Nationalist people trying to take over the universal church, a case of horrible people trying to hijack it. I think it usually does start with people of bad will creating denominations and creating bad cultures.
@@jimbobbyrnes Nope. What morals can anyone possibly have without religion? You may think your sense of morality is entirely original or belongs to you but you're wrong. Even the law system in all of Europe and the entire Western World is based on the morals of the Bible. I'm not even religious but I support Judeo-Christian values. I believe they are moral and without them there is no justice. Someone like you probably doesn't bother to notice this, but the "Christians" in Moral Orel are Protestant. Protestant essentially means "Real Christianity is either to hard to live by or just inconvenient so I'll change it to fit better with my personal beliefs. Protestantism was invented by some European King who wanted to divorce his wife for an invalid reason so he changed the Bible because he had the power to do it. So yeah it's basically a cult, which means it should never be grouped together with Orthodox Christianity since the two are as different from each other as Islam
Orel had a terrible life, I mean his alcoholic in-the-closet-homosexual father shot him, his depressed mother hardly paid attention to him, and there was no one he could ever really turn to. I don't know how you're life is, but this isn't "standard human intuition." The only reason Orel grew up to be the great happy man he did and not like the sad side characters in hid town is because he had faith that everything would turn out right in the end.
@WixkedLovy I agree with everything you said but just have a correction. Clay was a closeted bisexual, he was attracted to/made out with the librarian, hit on the female bartender, hit one many women when he first drank, etc.
@@polishherowitoldpilecki5521 didn’t “turn gay”. That’s not an accurate way of phrasing it but it is true he only seems to have gone for Stopframe when it comes to male partners
I think in large part because of how the show was built. Comedy and Tragedy are very closely related. Both hit much harder when the audience can identify with the show. By Season 3, we were already invested into Orel, knew he was a good kid and didn't deserve the things that happened to him. The emotional investment in Moralton was high enough to facilitate tragic storytelling. I can understand why the show got canceled. If you never were invested in the first 2 seasons, then the third might not grab you at all and just seem depressing.
Moral Orel is good only because it expresses true emotion. It's not just about a boy who get misled into doing cooky things, it's about everyone in the town, and their lives. Why are they are the way they are, and how they "showed" (he figured it out really) Orel how to live. It's an emotional comedy/tragedy.
Don't give up man. Don't ever give up. No matter where you are in life, no matter how difficult it gets, know that you can change it all. You are stronger than you know.
I watched Morel Orel back when i was Hopelessly Lost in an Addiction to Opiates.. its really was a sort of tiny reason that helped me to get help.. i lost hope with life and myself.. well i also met a girl who REALLY helped me out of that pit.. but Morel Orel and his happy ending, even though it was pure fiction sort of always sat in the back of my mind as.. if i fight hard enough for it.. maybe ill have a happy ending too.. its been 2 years and i havent looked back.. Thanks Dino
Moral Orel was a head of it's time With shows like Bojack, inside job and Rick and Morty going into drama and depressing subjects today I think Moral Orel would do super well if it came back now
moral Orel was such a beautiful show, the adult comedy to show the tragedy of the real world through an innocent boy in a fucked up family... there must be MOAR! whos idea was it to cancel such a beautiful show? it was the first show to really make me connect tbh.
adult swim decided to cancel it after the episode "alone" from season three because they deemed it too sad to fit into the adult swim genre . the whole series was so fucking good though I cant believe they did that .
It also sucks How adult swim the first seasons finale as the First Episode aired on tv which if fucked cause the firt season had a lot of build up to the Christmas episode.
TheFourohsix the producer thought it was too depressing so he pulled the plug on it. The creator kinda pushed it tho but it ended working out great. Stupid thing is that the producer still thinks he made the right decision despite every single Moral Orel fan loving the 3rd season.
I don't believe in God, and I don't like the christian religion in general, and I still agree with you because I recognize that faith can actually be a good thing for some people, and that Orel should keep his faith because its what got him through hard times and was a major aspect of his character.
> [Orel] was the only real Christian in the show I was raised in a place very like Moralton, and I think the point is that ALL of the characters are 'real Christians'. Some are kind, others cruel; some are pious, others arrogant; some are tolerant, others hateful; some walk their talk, others just talk... just as in real life. But they all believe the same things; they all identify as 'real' Christians; and they all have opinions about who among the others are not 'real' Christians.
i understand what your old comment is getting at, but what someone identifies as does not make them so. there is truth, and there is delusion. the people who have lost all faith in christ, cease to be christians
That's a bad take All Religious books even give guidelines as to how to attain godliness by following moral conduct, self restraint etc., and only by that do you become religious. The people shown here practice infidelity, unprovoked violence, sex for the sake of pleasure and not reproduction, and they have no restraint in their desires. At least Orel has restraint and a strong will because he brainwashed himself by fixating his thoughts on God, so his brain has very little room for temptation But the rest of these people are not religious/they are not true Christians
But be careful not to confuse physical, short-term happiness over emotional, well-being happiness. Clay and many others in Moreltan were physical happy but they were dissatisfied human beings.
This video is very nostalgic to me. Summer 2021, last year, I was listening to this song and enjoying. I was in my family’s car, on my yearly summer traveling trip. It’s nighttime. I make it to my grandma’s house in Colorado and I’m there on the bed in the peaceful early morning, stumbling upon this video. This is how I got introduced to the show. Yea sure, I could’ve been introduced to it some other time from reviews and stuff but after this experience, this might as well be one of, if not the best possible way for me to find out about the show
.His father Clay when he was a child inadvertently"killed" his mother when he played a prank on her and she had a heart attack .His father already holding resentment at his son never forgave him at with held all emotion.Leading him to seek physical abuse as a form of validation. His wife was raised by a woman who was obsessed with singing. She was a horrid singer and her mother ignored her leading her to cope by drinking. When they met she introduced him to drinking there chances for joy were gone.
I was introduced to this song by a really good documentary about the Heaven's Gate cult. Most people don't realize the cult was around since the 70's and had many well educated members.
i love this show and i truly wish there was more like this on tv. i would actually watch tv. the second and especially the third seasons were truly works of art in my opinion. i especially loved this music video you did a fine job of putting it together and showing off this amazing show!
I'm crying manly tears right now. I'm not even a man. I am an 18 year old girl with a penchant for Morel Orel who has just discovered this beautiful song. This is a beautiful compilation. And, damn it, I am crying manly tears.
Yeah you did. On the last episode, not Before Orel, but the last episode at the very end it shows Orel looking sad as a kid but then he grows up and he's happy and married and has two kids who he loves a lot and his life is all awesome. And he did forgive his parents because there is a picture of them, and of Shapey and Block all grown up, on his wall as well as a cross. So ha! And as for the rest of your comment I'm not even going to respond to that.
I'm fifteen, and I stumbled across this show on a, top darkest adult cartoon episodes list, by a youtuber phantom Strider. And I doubt anyone will be here to answer me but I'm dealing with religious problems as well as being gay, I don't know what to do anymore, if anyone can hear me
i hear you. i know this is old but i still hear you. don’t worry, i’ve struggled with my sexuality and religious identity too. i cope with it by reminding myself that God is simply an idea, and all forms of following said idea are subjective. a lot of religions (or in this instance Christianity) established homophobia within their systems as a way to create power dynamics, not strengthen the relationship with faith. the principals of historical Jesus Christ have been skewed by the church in order to maintain a stagnant hierarchy and use specific groups of people or concepts as easy scapegoats for larger, more abstract issues/questions. so we’ve been screwed over by organized religion; now what? i say that being yourself is the best possible thing you can do to both strengthen your relationship with yourself and with your faith. authenticity is a form of appreciating and utilizing what God gave you. subvert the expectations of the church and challenge it so the church can question itself and return to its sacred principals of justice and love. nobody is exempt from corruption, and freeing yourself from people/institutions that constrict you when they say they care about you is one of the best things you can do. free yourself, and let oppressive systems slowly kill themselves.
Hope you’re doing better, being young and gay can be a very dark and scary time! Just keep your chin up and know that there is an entire world out there filled with people who will embrace and accept you!
The show always had a cult following (it always did well in ratings and was successful enough in reruns that Beforal Orel was greenlit). It's just this last year or two had a HUGE boost in people who were just now discovering it, whether because they weren't born when it came out or they misjudged it on first glance.
I'm confused as to why Orel losing his faith would desecrate the show. Every episode dealt with a social structure in which a child accumulated an experience through a twist of blind faith that he listened to. The specific faith he is under makes no difference to the show. Regardless of what you are bias to, losing his faith and keeping his faith are two stories to tell, both of which can end in ways that are similar.
I wish I wanna be survived like him. My childhood look great from 2000's place and 2010's when I was Teenagehood I'm almost becoming offensive kid than nihilistic and adulthood will I'm so lucky I'm not married man or Job still need alot to learn.
I put off this show for so long because the loud part of Moral Orels fanbase is Fedora tip athiests and it really just put me off. I really love this show
When your world is in a funk and then count on it gettin a little worse ...then the light & the clarity of having a fresh scar nets you another experience. another lesson in life your then rite on top of your game (for a few hours anyway)
I thought I was the only one who noticed. I am a christian and I love this show JUST because morel orel stays faithful through all the crap. No matter what. #MoreRealOrels
But the entire last episode is about him still believing in God and trying to reconcile his faith with the reality of his shitty father. It was only through his own interpretation of faith that he was able to forgive Clay.
The last season does indeed transcend, combining true profundity/comedy, Why isn't this yet available on DVD? Thanks for posting, great choice for audio.
You are right though, about it not being merely a slight at religion. Orel losing his faith would have meant a lot more than just attacking religion. It would mark the transition of Orel from an innocent child trying to learn how to live, into the mindset of a disillusioned adult who has lost faith in the world itself, into a cold-hearted cynic. This would turn Orel into less of a character and more of a conduit of criticism. And like I said earlier, his life wasn't that bad.
boo! I don't think we ever got to see Orel grow up. Just like love, it's easy to see someone who cares about you as naive. I just enjoy how it blasts organized religion in general. One's faith isn't labeled as anything or even in general. It's an abstraction. Either you have faith, or you spend the rest of your life wondering, how things got to be the way they are now.
guess what guys dino stamatopolous has posted on fb and announced the return of moral orel in september 10th (reruns) but heres the good news the prequel before oral will premire november 19th
My mom loved this show. And I used to like it okay when I was a kid. Now that I understand it more. I like it more. Oral is gonna grow up to be a good man. And coming from a gay guy that's saying something.
@@paulbunyangonewild7596 You implied that a boy raised by a gay guy (or gay couple) wasn't likely to grow up to be a good man. I found that to be offensive.
@@DavidLS1 oh nononono. I was talking about how despite being raised around a society thats deeply "religous" and not really favorable to gay men, like myself, Oral was going to rise above and be better than them. Thats all.
@HappyHeathen77 I see your point, but the idea that someone could witness the vast breadth of hypocracy that Orel did and reject it, without rejecting the source of it, defies logic.
