Of course you give the customer the right advice for a good outcome of the job. If they don't accept it, then you can ethically either refuse the job or do it with the probable outcome which you warned of.

My view is that it is not a race to reach the bottom. 1. Don't try to compete with tradesmen who will do anything to make a few quid, regardless of the consequences. 2. Always explain to the client if what they want to do is wrong or dangerous, and don't be afraid to walk away from a job. 3. You live by your reputation, and the quality of your work...any corners that you cut will come back to bite you in the arse at some point. 4. People who want a quick bodge up to rip someone off, are not the kind of people you want as a client. 5. The best way is to build a customer base of clients who see you as a reliable and trustworthy purveyor of high quality workmanship. They will give you repeat work and recommend you to their like minded friends and colleagues. All of that is easy to say, with so many people chasing the work, and customers using that as an excuse to beat the price down...but I couldn't sleep at night if I felt that I had ripped someone off or not done my best work.

Thanks for the comment David, I totally agree with you there and thats they way that I work, I would rather lose out on the money than make money and feel like I had ripped someone off. There have been many times Ive pulled something apart and started again because I would rather be at work till 10 than give people less than my best! Have a great evening!

What goes around comes around. He that screweth.. prepare to be screwed. The moral code is from eternity, love your God and your neighbor as yourself. Simple.

The one thing I wouldn't do is keep my mouth shut. I've always put morales over money, but I've never been desperate. So I can't judge those that bend their's. Great video and question!

Act professionally, the customer isn't just paying you for the product they are purchasing your experience and expertise. And thats why I am expensive and happy to tell my customers so. In many cases it could be said that the customers laziness in not obtaining three quotes is there downfall. Talking to three different tradesman is there opportunity for a free education and the opportunity to avoid getting ripped of.

That's a great way to look at it. I often talk about having to educate the customer as to how things should be done and why they should be done a specific way. We are the same, I happily tell people we are not cheap BUT we will do it properly, explain why we do things and ensure the longevity of everything we do. It takes years to build a business and a couple of bad Jobs to ruin it!
