Sculptured Moravian workbench on another level.
It’s different with a shipwrights take of this crazy carpenters workbench, incorporating radius legs and carved stretcher’s . The bench is completely assembled with pigmented epoxy resin in laminated solid yellow pine and oak suggesting the appearance of a boats deck.

Beautiful workmanship. I've recently finished my version of the Moravian workbench,but not as nice as yours. Split top with central planing stop, similar metal face vice wrapped in oak, pop up bench dogs, and a sliding deadman. I've also added kick-up wheels so i can wheel it around, drop it down on its legs and work on a rock solid bench or take it apart to make space in my garage. I like your lower tool tray, i may have to borrow that idea and make a similar addition to mine.

That what was fantastic, love the build and the aesthetic considerations, hopefully my take on the Moravian (currently got the bench top half done) will be half as worthy as yours. Looking forward to seeing more! 😊
@benconstruct
@benconstruct 16 дней назад
Thank you Ross, that was a lovely thing to say, but maybe yours will be better. I would very much like to see it when it’s done, but what would be really nice if you ve thought of something different to include with yours. That s why I offen take on projects if there is a slight improvement to be made or you can add something not realised before, it is the essence of the Moravian bench, which that clever man Mr Myles (Will), picked up on. Possibly you could say “this is not the end of the the Moravian, nor is it the start of the end, but it might be the end of the start of the beginning “, 😉😝

@@benconstruct “onward and upward to infinity and beyond” hah! yes it’s become a thing this workbench. Waiting on my book by Schwarz “Ingenious Mechanicks” where he is all over ancient bench’s from Roman/Helenium/medieval to current, but the Moravian has won my heart for all the reasons you state and then some. Sadly I’m just starting a massive house rebuild so can’t realistically put in the time to procrastinate too much over it, if it’s not done by next week, I’ll be in trouble, but when done I’ll post it up somewhere, lumps and all, and let you know. Cheers and thanks again!

Nice nice comment Sir, it is a great bench to work on, I assure you. One of the other reasons i went with the Moravian is i can drop it completely & re-erect it in less than 4 minutes outside under my sun sail¬thus ensuring the best light possible & working outside dust free in the milder mouths here in UK...if we ever get a summer that is (not sure yet if we ve had a week over 20 degrees C yet, & its mid June.) 🙂 Thanks Benc

@@benconstruct Those are certainly additional benefits. Portability, to me, is the main reason for having a Moravian bench. Interesting that you mention your local temps being low. Thanks for that, real nice comment 👍, case of me carrying on in chaotic way behind the scenes (not enough prep done), & from both points, the the camera guy getting to know the product (only got to see an hour before he got started filming), with to many side distractions going on & only a few hours to make 5 different videos about the table, he was a cool customer believe me. (Slightly different for me as well-first time I managed to get someone on the other side of the camera, not just me videoing myself off a mobile phone). He got the brief of making the bench look well & would definitely use him again, great guy to work with. We will improve I assure you. V please you like it anyway & do take your point. 👍

I've been thinking about doing the exact thing, bent lamination curved legs on a Moravian bench! Can you tell me what the radius is on the legs?
@benconstruct
@benconstruct 14 дней назад
Yes, sure. There is approximately 100 mm on the legs(4 inch) with the bench height top off worktop 840mm(33 inch), with stretchers having only 40mm(1.5 inch) in them. (Bench thickness being 3.5 inch) 👍Benc

I'd be interested to know which epoxy system you used. Seems expensive to use full marine grade with non marine woods? Any experience with roofing grade epoxy?
@benconstruct
@benconstruct 15 дней назад
That’s a good question Tom, and to give you first an idea of cost, for 5kg of EL2 laminating epoxy (supplied by Easycomposite s in uk) =£110- approx. (Only used 1/2) & it’s possibly less than $US 100- in the states. It’s a similar grade epoxy as your better known marine West system or SP. & i believe actually made in 🇺🇸 US. So there is an additional cost, but this pales in significance to the assured quality of the bond & its strength. Some people don’t like using it, because a careful mixing regime & temperature controlled environment is required to ensure its best capability’s. And there is a little bit extra time to prepare the resin, ie it’s not something you can just squeeze out of a tube. This really where the cost lies, that said once your used to dealing with it, the quality assurance additional strengths it brings to the table, that goes with it when used correctly, to my mind is worth the effort. Please see the new video being released today which talks about the lamination effect on a workbench. Thank you for your comment Tom & maybe give me a comment after seeing that one. 👍 Benc
@tomedom5107
@tomedom5107 14 дней назад
I use West and have used Mass and SP in the past, so not afraid of playing with epoxy. The EL2 you used is intended for fibre and cloth lamination. Not to say it won't work with wood but I guess you thickened it as well as colouring it black? BTW I'm in the UK.
@benconstruct
@benconstruct 14 дней назад
@@tomedom5107 no additive Tom, other than the prescribed pigment to use + you might have a good argument on your hands if you chat to them over at Easycomposites (Staffordshire way), if you were to suggest sp or West were better than their stuff with wood, but they are a great little company you can call & chat to them anytime about uses or technical stuff. They are really helpful. The main thing I know about the EL2 is, it is recommended for use with wood bonding or lamination purposes & the only reason you might not use it for finished surface coating purposes, which you can do, is they have a better one (XCR) for that, which has ridiculously clear clarity properties & only 15% more in cost. If something’s good Tom, I have no problem at all recommending it or them, link ⬇️ www.easycomposites.co.uk/#!/cart Follow their guides on how to use, & you won’t go wrong 👍

We use German or Scandinavian type of bench , called a ,,PONK" but with straight legs this crocket ones must be one of kind fantasmagory of some american inventot or re-purposing of some different project , and I recon, as-is usual in tradition of anglo-saxson pirates or colonial insurgence they give it some super supid name for marketing purposes. I recomend YOU to get real bench not that cripple leg experiment, also you will find out that set of drawers is much practical under the bench or what is that.
