More CN C40-8 Locomotives Scrapped at Chicago Heights Processing!

On April 23rd, 2022, I revisited Chicago Heights Processing in Chicago Heights, Illinois to see if anymore Canadian National Dash 8 series locomotives had been scrapped. I flew my drone over the facility and found more engines that had been cut up since my last visit. Two more C40-8Ms had met their fate, with one of them being completely cut in half horizontally! A few more ex-Santa Fe C40-8Ws were also scrapped. Soon enough, the whole facility will be filled to the brim with locomotive remnants!

What a sight. Interesting to see 2199 there, as I actually have the bell to that unit after winning an eBay auction for it. Tested it and still works. Deep down, it's sad to see. Once hauling freight at 70MPH for the ATSF. Now retired and being scrapped. But that's just the cycle these things go through.

Looks like they might've set the cab on fire on the 2408 when they were cutting her up. Sad to see the unique Draper Taper C40-8M's getting the torch. I hope at least IRM is able to get one, or even one or two Canadian museums, before they're all gone. GE didn't make very many cowl units overall, and not a single one of the earlier granddaddy cowls, the U30CG's or the P30CH's were saved. I hope that mistake isn't repeated again.

@Ntwadumela84
@Ntwadumela84 2 года назад
Can I just interject a little logic in the comment section? First off, these locomotives are all around 30yrs old, and CN just bought 75 former Citirail CREX ES44ACs. A locomotive will only last around 10-15yrs before it essentially needs completely overhauled/rebuilt. CN bought these locomotives 10yrs ago. They are probably due for a major overhaul and being taken out of service as they have serious failures, like prime mover, alternator, etc. When CN bought the old CNW C40-8s from UP, they got them at scrap value because they were worn out and nobody else wanted them. All of the Class 1 railroads have embraced the Precision Scheduled Railroad mantra, which essentially equals monster trains pulled by as few locomotives as possible. DC locomotives, like these Dash-8s, have no future in a world like that because the railroads want to go 100% AC power on their main line trains. That way you can run a massive, under-powered land barge and not worry about burning up DC traction motors. There has been a huge glut of old locomotives getting dumped by the Class One railroads in the past few years, way more than the used locomotive market can handle. Many short lines have no interest in acquiring used GEs when they have all the SD40-2s they want. Hypothetically, these Dash-8s could be rebuilt and last another 30yrs, but if nobody wants them, they are going to go to scrap. I personally helped scrap/part out 4 CN locomotives here at Chicago Heights Processing back in 2009, 3 SD40-2Ws and a SD50F, when I worked for Bonnett Locomotive Salvage. I've also worked for Railserve and had the opportunity to operate some BNSF Dash-8s.

Thanks for the insight, as sad as it is to see them go (I especially loved the ex CNW standard cab dash 8s you mentioned) it is interesting to hear that they were quite buggered when CN bought them in the first place.

@@8HumblePie I said all usable parts. Dash 8 prime movers are not usable parts. No one wants or needs them. When an sd40-2 gets scrapped, anything worth keeping is salvaged. I watched a video where a scrapper goes through the whole process of scrapping an sd40-2. Quite informative.
@Ntwadumela84
@Ntwadumela84 2 года назад
@@8HumblePie I used to scrap/part out locomotives with a company called Bonnet Locomotive Salvage. We helped cut up 4 locomotives here at Chicago Heights Processing in 2009. We never saved the truck frames on any locomotives we ever scrapped. As far as the prime movers, GE FDL cast iron crank cases cannot be rebuilt forever like a fabricated steel EMD block can. With the glut of recently retired Dash-8s, parts demand is probably low, meaning the scrap yards won't bother stripping prime movers for parts if they aren't worth the time.

Years ago they did the same thing in Tacoma Washington on the tideflats (the industrial area) but they had dozens lined up ready to scrap and they disappeared pretty quickly. It was a busy place! You'd think they'd have a shredder of some kind setup as they don't do anything without machines. Huh, what? There are ZERO 100 year-old steam locomotives operating outside of museums, and the vast majority of steam locomotives were scrapped more than 60 years ago. The Dash 8s in this video are 30+ years old - an entirely respectable service life.

@@GTKCF2023 I am going to tell you a truth about General Electric, their locomotives are disposable and have a period of time. It is sad to see a Dash 8 being scrapped but it is the reality, the good thing is that all the parts are taken to the foundry to make new locomotives and cars

If any of you had to spend hours on end in the cab of one of these, I'm sure you'd be singing a different tune. My brother is a hogger for CN, along with many of his colleagues are happy to see these go. A lot of the crews I've talked to prefer the ES44AC and Tier 4 locomotives due to the fact they are more comfortable a ride and they do what they are supposed to.... pull tonnage. Railways aren't in the business of appeasing to railfans because they want a certain locomotive to run, they're there to run a business. Get over it!

I have spent time in them and they are a lot more comfortable and quiet than most of the older units. Hell they are quieter and more comfortable that an SD70 wich is newer!

@@railroadmike6843 I guess it depends on which of the Dash 8's we are talking about. The BC Rail / CN cowls were apparently knowing for being dubbed "rattlers". One ex-BCR employee mentioned he quite liked the blue C44-9W's that BC Rail later got.
