The erupting volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma has blown open new fissures, sending more lava streaking across the island. Authorities are monitoring air quality along the shoreline - where lava has reached the Atlantic ocean. The Spanish Government has committed to re-building the island, and is providing millions for those who lose houses and livelihoods.

Journalists should give some background about the eruption. It´s the third in this island in the last 73 years. La Palma is not a big island, but there is some distance from the North to the South, all historic eruptions in La Palma, last 600 years, happened in the South of the island like now. Dominant winds in Canarias are the Alisios winds, coming from NE and blowing to SW, so they´re pushing the smoke towards the open sea. Most of people living in the northern half of the island. The peninsula created by the lava falling into the sea 72 years ago is now producing bananas near the ocean. Lets hope the best.

Live in the south, and a Hurricane might get you. We all have something. 2: The San Andreas is gigantic. It goes from Mexico city to San Francisco. I think most of us hope that when it goes, it just doesn't happen near us. Sounds cold, but again, everyone does this with their natural disasters. But yeah, when the San Andreas finally goes off, it's going to be bad. They say it will be worse than a nuke.

@ronnie-being-ronnie
@ronnie-being-ronnie 2 года назад
Victim implies no choice. People made the choice to live there, despite knowing the volcano has been very recently active. That was gamble, and now some people have lost. That is a consequence of the choice they made, not happenstance making them victims. I will never understand why people choose to build their homes where there is known risk: flood zones, seashores, on top of freaking volcanos…I seriously don’t get it. I saw an interview of a woman whose house had flooded. Aw, sad….ah…wait a minute! Turns out the house had flooded just years before and she chose to use the insurance money to rebuild. 🤦‍♀️ The second flood was far worse than the first, which had been very bad. Governments should establish funds to buy out properties in disaster prone areas. It saves us all, as a society, money in the long run. The city I live near has a flood prone valley. The local citizens, in cooperation with local governments, established a foundation that buys out the properties along the river that flows through several municipalities. The land is restored to a natural state, improved with a walking/biking trail that follows the river, and larger sections have public parks created. It improves the quality of life for residents and is quite lovely. They just completed a new section that connected two others, so one can walk for miles along the river. When the river floods, as is expected for rivers to do, no homes or businesses are affected there, now. The walkway gets covered with mud and the parks are flooded for a few days. When the water recedes, the walkway is cleaned off and life goes back to normal.

The bottom of the ocean is almost 7 km (4 mi) and the highest peak is about 2,4 km (8000 ft). That's a lot of lava. This relatively minor eruption, if it doesn't continue for years, won't add that much. Furthermore, there are different ways a volcano can erupt. This is a spatter cone with a basalt lava stream. Creating new land. There are calderas that show very explosive eruptions in the past. The kind of explosions that like mt. St. Helens can blow a part of the mountain off. So yeah, it takes millions of years. Furthermore, volcanic rock is the best for radiometric dating. So there's that.

It's in many ways amusing. If you live on a small island with active volcanos then you benefit vastly from it (farming and tourism) but also suffer when eruptions take place. Therefore no need to play the the role of a naive victime of nature. It's not force majeur. Just check your house insurance when you live near the volcano.
