More Flowers Means More Money! But Can She Make It While Sick?

Ranunculus are still producing in large quantities, and we have used them to make the ulitimate bouquet recipe, a rainbow ranunculus bouquet. This got people buying like never before, and our roadside stand sold massive amounts of bouquets before the farmers market even arrived. Unfortunately this week, Serina is still feeling bad, and will have to persevere through a long and challenging day, of harvesting, processing, and arranging enough bouquets to break our personal best sales record. If you want to sell a lot, you have to bring a lot, so Serina will be working another late night to make it happen. Lots of times this year already, we have gone to the farmers market with lots of flowers, but they sell out in the first few hours, before the busiest time of day is complete. This week, the plan is to bring so many bouquets that we can sell till the end. How much will we sell this week? You have to watch to find out.

In our town the flower farmer makes the bouquets at the market for his customers. You walk up and say I want a $10 or $20 and you tell them the general colors or flowers you want and they make it on the spot. People line up for the bouquets. Perhaps this is a technique you could use so Serina is not up all night making them. Maybe you could have a volunteer or two that can wrap the flowers once a bouquet is made. Just a suggestion. I know you are both burning the candle at both ends! Feel better soon!

I admire how good hard workers you are to strive for that goal. but you won't make it if you don't find a balance between work and taking care of yourself! I have been in the greenhouse business for 13 years so I understand the workload involved. Just being concerned for you both and your children. so much you can miss they grow so fast!!! praying for you all.

Just a thought, but something to consider....In the event your regular location changes, maybe you can erect something like a flag with your branding on it that way people can easily see where you are located. You consistently produce a high quality product and generally speaking, the outgrowth of that is LOYALTY. Other vendors may be an option, but regular customers will prefer and want your product. Truly admirable what you are doing. Much, much respect to you. Your flowers are breathtaking.

The rainbow bouquets are gorgeous! Please take care of Serena. It’s worth it sometimes to not push it to the limit to make the money that week. You are incredibly creative people and will find the places to make up what you maybe didn’t take into account when planning the year. I hope Serena feels better soon! It could be an idea to look into increasing your efficiency of movement - you could save a lot of effort and your energy if your streamlined work process more. Maybe certain steps, like the wrapping of bouquets, could be batched. Or consciously holding more stems before putting them into your bucket. Learning about the 80/20 rule can really give back a lot of your time.

Just want to say, we ran a home based business for 20 years. I had to push myself like you Serina. We reached our financial goals and raised our 3 kids to successful adulthood! But now I'm suffering chronic health issues which SUCKS and I can't fully enjoy retirement...but I would do it all again to see my kids do well like ours are. TOTALLY WORTH IT! ❤

So sorry you are not feeling well again, Serina. I hope you are better now. The bouquets were gorgeous. Hope they sold in the farm stand. Do you gargle with lightly salted warm water when you have a sore throat? That does help. I found Fisherman’s Friend cough drops several years ago and found them to give a lot of relief for sore throats and colds. They are not the sticky sugary type cough drops and they work. Also, for a cold my acupuncturist recommended Cold Quell which I have used ever since he told me about it. It dries up and knocks out a cold quickly. Honey and lemon tea helps and you can add any herbs and ginger (especially the fresh root). That’s the mom in me coming out. By the way, Ian, a weed is not necessarily a weed….it could be looked upon as a gift from nature. Last year I was weeding an area and saw a clump of large leaves. I thought it might be something special. This year it produced several 5 1/2’ tall foxglove blooms. Not a weed….a precious gift from nature or a wild plant as some people refer to them. LOL😊💕🦋

You are a trouper Serena!! Have you seen the floret mini course on market bouquets? She was talking about being able to do something like 50 or 60 bouquets/hour! You do such a beautiful job with your blooms. But I feel for you in this moment. Hope you healed up quickly!

Have you considered doing a plywood cutout of your back seat to set on top of 2x4 or 4x4 legs to add a second tier? Might come in very handy once veggies start arriving too!

Love these videos! Maybe you can put some buckets on the ground, too. Right in front of your stand. On the sides. They will be more visible. That is what they do where I live. They also have buckets with just flowers, no bouquets. You pick the ones you want and take them home and make your own arrangement. Just adding ideas 😁 Get well soon

She and Ian do work very, very hard and have come a lomg way in a short period of time. I think in time they will find their groove and working smarter not harder with taking time for themselves will occur. We all are concerned for Serenas health but usually there comes a point when no matter what we say she has to be the one that makes the changes. My spouse 5 yrs ago just never slowed down and it almost killed her, literally. She learned and it took 5 yrs to climb back from injuries and poor health. Thank goodness I studied, making herbal tinctures and changed her (our) diets-now life is even better. We are all on our respective journeys for sure. I am in awe with seeing the aerial shots of all the red roof farm has going on!

As someone who went from chronically ill to disabled, please take time to take care of yourself! I so respect your drive, but sheer force of will and personality can only push you so far. I wish I had more intensively looked for solutions when I was sick, but still mostly able bodied. It’s really hard to work back to functional levels once certain health issues progress. In the end, lost revenue for a week or two is a lot more manageable than lost revenue for a year or more. Best wishes for better health! I hope you feel better soon 💛

Your stand is amazing, the market manager is a fool for not wanting you in a prominent place. Sad you didn't do the 2K but it was still a great day. If you can sell 30 from the roadside, there's an argument for not doing a market. I think it would make your workflow batter and improve you quilty of life.

You two did it! So worried about Serina pushing it so hard while sick. The market looked gorgeous. Those beautiful flowers, in those bright colors, so stunning they almost seemed fake! Have you ever watched the video of Erin from Floret making her market bouquets? She basically does an assembly line and can knock out 30 bouquets in less than an hour. Check it out if you haven’t! It might help out your bouquet making system 😊
