Damn, the rubber feet on the Model 1 SEGA CD are no joke. That shit ain't goin' NOWHERE.

I can't tell you how many systems I've lost to insufficient rubber footing. Without proper sticking power, consoles will just leap off your shelf and crash onto the floor.

Man, I just plain _LOVE_ hacks and homebrews. Simply the best way of keeping classic consoles alive. And thanks to emulation, it opens these platforms up more since anyone who doesn't, say, own an NES or Genesis could download an emulator and get a few ROMs, (how is up to them), and maybe that might encourage them to track down the real deal! As for the Link to the Past MSU patch, my only gripe is that the opening cutscene has Link mentioned by name! The reason this bothers me is LttP was the first game where your name was used in place of Link's. The instruction manual even went out of its way to use the pronoun "you" in reference to Link to drive home the fact that YOU _ARE_ LINK! Other than that, the FMV was pretty cool, and did feel like something that might've happened had the SNES Play Station actually happened and not the CD-i. The FM patch for the SMS version of Sonic the Hedgehog was pretty impressive too! I'd love to see more FM hacks! It actually reminded me of when I used to cover video game music, and Sonic the Hedgehog was one of my first covers using FamiTracker for NES sound. But that's a different topic. ;3

Homebrew software is a game or app made by independent group of people for a console without any publishers or permissions from the company that developed the said console. Indie game is just any game made by independent group of people - some indie games are even being published or funded by the first party (like "Ori and The Blind Forest"), and the main criteria of being "independent" is a total creative control on the side of developers, without any interference from executives. Every homebrew game is technically an indie game, but not every indie game is a homebrew game. Here's my take on it c:
@AgentDanielCross

I would more define it that homebrews are targeted to specific consoles or PCs(Amiga 500 or Genesis), while indie games are meant for the latest consoles and PCs

Mario 3 Mix is SO GREAT! Would also recommend checking out the homebrew port of Leisure Suit Larry for NES (that even comes with a mail-in for a NES port of Atari's E.T.) and the hack Rockman 4 Minus Infinity. Tons of great hacks and homebrews out there.

The coolest retro homebrew scene is the Colecovision. Opcode Games has released the previously cancelled Super Game Module which makes the Colecovision as powerful as the MSX computer. Companies such as Team Pixelboy and Collecotorvision have already released dozens of games that support the module. A real treasure trove for anyone who enjoys classic 8 bit gaming.

This is by far my favorite episode. There are some nifty conversions in the pipeline like Megaman 2 and Gradius for the Master System. There is also a port of Gradius 2 for the Megadrive being worked on. These are great times to be a gamer! On another note, thanks for giving Pyron a shout out, he's been working hard on these games and it's nice to see he's getting recognition.

There's really great Sega Genesis hack for Mortal Kombat 3 called Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Trilogy. It combines all of the characters from previous titles into one game. It also replaces all of the sound effects with the arcade and updates the animations to make them more fluid.

18:55 Indie: mid-size production, official, (usually) original material or licensed, commercial Homebrew: small production, unofficial, usually (but not necessarily) makes use of other commercial material (like existing game engines, sprites, music, levels, design etc.), underground, no licenses (sometimes illegal), free, not advertised I would draw the line here: If you can purchase it from a company/market - it's an Indie. If the plan exists to sell it in the future - it's an Indie. If it is kickstarted - it's an Indie. Homebrews may turn into indies, but not vice versa.

What if an indie game ends up being ported to various consoles via homebrew? Kinda like the obligatory Doom Port. The Indie-scene still is pretty young and a lot of developers won't allow something like this to happen nowadays, but in like 15 or so years it might happen.

IMHO, Having a commercial presence (whatever that means these days) might be what differentiates most between "Homebrew" and "Indie". Glad you had nice things to say about the bleep bloops from Justice Beaver. That means a lot to me coming from you guys.
@pinmike8666
@pinmike8666 8 лет назад
Homebrew design and indie design kinda go hand-in-hand; "homebrew" originates from making new alcohol from one's residence than a corporate environment, which was especially popular during the Prohibition-Era, so do most self-focused indie developers like Locomalito. I think most (including myself) separate the two terms by considering indie designers as making a new game from scratch that's not intended to be on an actual game console that inspired the game's design, while homebrewers typically design games from scratch or hack source codes with intention to play on actual old consoles or emulators based on them. Solid episode!
@pinmike8666
@pinmike8666 8 лет назад
As far as homebrew games y'all might want to try, I'd check out Princess Rescue, Zippy the Porcupine, and Stay Frosty 2 for the Atari Video Computer System/2600; with the exception of Stay Frosty 2, which is an original platformer-puzzle game, the former two are Mario and Sonic demakes that can be played on the actual console. All three games use the Sega Genesis controller's unique compatibility with the console. Stay Frosty 2 and Zippy carts can be acquired through AtariAge, but Nintendo C&D'd Princess Rescue, so no cart can be obtained; however, there is an Atari 2600 flash cart called the Harmony Cart Encore, which can play every Atari 2600 ROM, including the more advanced hombrews like Star Castle Arcade, which can't be played on the original Harmony Cart and there is a complete ROM of Princess Rescue that the author posted on the AtariAge forums.

While the TurboGrafx system really doesn't get much credit or attention as the other classic systems, seeing a rather interesting mode 7 style hack for the system while retaining both the look and most importantly, the speed of F-Zero on the SNES to see in action is just mind blowing! I hope to see more.clever hardware tricks from the little system that I never regretted once buying when it was first released.

If you ask me then Homebrew is software released for a games console or handheld through inofficial channels with or without approval by the original console manufacturer, for example if you use unlicensed repro-cartridges, modified official carts or a rom file to distribute the game. If the developers contacted the console manufacturer and they allow you to release it through the official retail channels like any other game for the system (for example on disk, an official cartridge or their digital storefronts like the eShop), then it's Indie.

Despite it's obvious problems (mostly slowdown and the Mario Galaxy gravity gimmick not working all the time during that part of the game), it was one of the few ROMHacks/homebrew games I've really enjoyed and felt like it could've been an actual Nintendo product rather than something done by a handful of people not directly related to Nintendo.

On the subject of Indie vs Homebrew, I'd say that an Indie game is one released for a console that is still in production at the time, while a homebrew would be a game released for an otherwise dead system.

Best Cartridge Design? Ooh, that's a tough one... The first thing that comes to my mind is the HuCard / Turbo Chip for obvious reasons: They're small, thin and they come in CD-style jewel-cases which I highly approve! But I also really like the Game Boy Advance cartridges because they're not only small, but they have a nice grip and sliding them in and out of the GBA feels great! And unlike HuCards, the contacts of GBA carts aren't fully exposed, but well, GBA games came on cardboard boxes that get damaged pretty easily and other than said boxes you don't really have a place to keep them when you're not playing them... Well, NDS boxes have a place to put a GBA game so that's nice, you can print your own GBA game cover with the DS's box's proportions and put that in there instead and store your GBA games that way so that's something... But well if you gotta do some extra work just to store your GBA games I'm gonna have to go with the HuCards just because of the CD Jewel Cases they come in... They're both great though! Honourable mentions: SNES, Game Boy/Colour, Sega Genesis and Neo Geo AES
