Father had an actual DROP THE MIC moment for me when he said that few Catholics live the faith and continue a life of habitual sin and as a result, they cannot expect that Priest, bishops and the Pope to be men of outstanding character because it’s not the leaders that they deserve!!!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏. BRAVO Father. Once again You hit it out if the Park. 😂😂😂. I soooooo needed this. Thank you as always. 🥰. Steve, you just gut punched with this one!!

This is such an important and underrated topic, so many young teens and even adults have taken their own lives as a result of detraction. It’s a serious problem especially in the age of social media. It’s a very pernicious sin. Depending on the degree of detraction or calumny, it can even feel like a slow and painful death.

Yep. My sibling (golden child) has been doing it to me since grade school with it getting worse & worse with age. Only spoken/been around the sibling 6 or 7 times since 1996 and they still speak to folks like they see me, are over at my home regularly. The lies have cost me lots, more then I can type here because people think I’m a junkie they shouldn’t associate with :(

Detraction St. Thomas - Summa - sometimes translated as 'backbiting' However, detraction is saying something that is true in order to harm someone's good name or reputation. It is different from calumny which involves saying something false to the same end. Murmuring - talking behind someone's back to destroy someone's reputation Contumacious - saying something that harms someone's good name to their face. Directly or Indirectly 4 Direct Ways: 1. Saying that which is false about him. 2. Stating his sin to be greater than it is. 3. Revealing something unknown about him. 4. Ascribing his good deeds to a bad intention. Indirectly: 1. Speaking against his good. 2. Maliciously concealing a good of him. 3. Diminishing the good of someone. Is it a grave matter to detract? Grave to blacken someone's good name. Restitution - if this was the case, you should strive to make restitution. However, it may be venial if: 1. Done from a light motive Not detraction to reveal a hidden sin so that a brother may amend his life. Sometimes, you can do this in a group setting for the good of public justice (charity in mind). Keeping someone from an evil situation. No right to ruin someone's name given the past acts they have since amended. Things that hinge on one's good name: 1. Reputation 2. Business affairs ruined 3. Charity Should we listen to people who detract? If a person is detracting and we listen without resisting it, we participate in their sin. Careful not to induce others to detract, gossip or probing through our questioning. What happens if we are detracted against? If you're good, remember it might be a test from God for you to grow in patience. "If they persecuted me, they will persecute you" At times, we should defend ourselves. Other times, just grow in virtue. Does that mean that every time we say a true thing that harms a reputation is a detraction? Conditions for it NOT to be a detraction: 1. What we say has to be just (neither greatly nor lower) and proportionate. 2. Detachment from saying bad things about others (it should pain us). Constant detraction against priests, bishops, and the pope. Lack of certitude about things these people have said due to news media - ALWAYS go to the source video/transcript or refrain from commenting at all. We get the leaders we deserve. Straighten your behavior first, instead of going around detracting. (Take the plank out of your own eye...) When to do it: 1. Only do it for the good of the person you're talking about (fraternal correction) 2. For the good of someone that might fall for the trap/snares of this person. When not: To feel smug or superior (malice) Government involvement in our lives is extreme. And it's the vast majority of the news. Stop paying attention to them. Start reading more (Scripture, Catechism, Organon, Ethics, Saints lives, etc.) Always avoid taking delight when revealing info. Necessary: when someone unjustly has a good name that can be used to cause great harm. Counsels: - Should be infrequent. - Check the appetites (do not habituate to delight in evil - malice) - Avoid constant negativity, focus primarily on God - *Charity above all*

Excellent talk, as per usual! Thank you, Father, and Steve. Full disclosure, this is one final (but not the only) area I have had to depress, in my life. I use this as a joke, but it’s true, I come from Italian and Greek background, mainly, so I’ve been battling spaghetti and revenge my entire life. Thankfully, it is dissipating, and where I need to take proper steps, if talking to the person doesn’t work, I look for legal ways of amending the issue - and to whatever length this may be necessary, no more and no less. I still have to keep my tongue in check, so regular confession helps, immensely. In terms of those in authority, I have one rule. If they can cheat and lie to their spouses and family, they have no qualms about doing the same to others. Doesn’t deserve my vote, full stop.

I’m truly sorry to hear that. I’ve gone through this myself, to make a very long story short… Me and my gf went through a rough patch last year, (I had my fair share of mistakes in the situation). She went and created an entire Instagram account with the sole purpose of destroying and ruining my reputation. She posted very damaging content on this account, and proceeded to follow the majority of my friends, family, acquaintances and people who work in my industry. In order to seek revenge. It was very humiliating and painful to endure. Eventually had to get the police involved to stop it. I haven’t fully gotten over it or healed from it. So I understand how painful it can truly be.

Social media and phones have multiplied this sin exponentially. It’s so easy to rashly write your basest thoughts and hit send without really thinking. Phones in the hands of kids and teens is especially bad, but now the immaturity and lack of self-control has extended into adulthood. I don’t own an internet cell phone, or use any social media. This is the farthest I go, an occasional comment on RU-vid and I use email with close friends and family. Nonetheless, I nearly lost my job because of one person’s false conclusion regarding something I said in a private conversation with another person at a conference. The lady overheard a phrase I spoke, assumed the worst, made it into an entire work of fiction, and proceeded to spread it all over via Facebook. After six months, it made its way to my supervisor, who, instead of asking me, went to her supervisor, then to the department head, and from there, to the head of the regional chapter. Only then was I informed via “a confrontation,” in which I was demanded to defend myself. I had no idea what the man was talking about because the original conversation was of no consequence, small talk by the coffee urn between conference speakers. I was hounded by this for three years before I was able, with the help of some computer savvy friends, to contact the woman with whom I had the original conversation. In the meantime, the woman who spread the fiction had quit and moved away. I missed out on four potential promotions with corresponding pay raises and in-service training. The department head knew the original woman, so I was able to partially clear up the matter at work, but many still had their suspicions. I remained socially excluded for the remaining five years I worked there. The story spread outside my workplace to similar workplaces and to people in my chapel, because it concerned a moral matter.

I'm really sorry that you've gone through all of that 😔 I'm sort of in a similar situation at work, there's a lot of gossip in the workplace and I've had someone spread some negative, exaggerated things about me, which has damaged my relationship with my other colleagues. That person's left the company as well (and this was our HR too) but I'm still feeling the effects of the damage that was caused. I'm glad to be listening to this video and reading the comments, I'm happy and sad at the same time to know I'm not the only one who's gone through this.

I was wondering as I listened about situations where people feel the need for emotional support after being abused or badly treated, in that situation it isn't necessary for the other person to know what someone did, but the speaker can receive counsel and find peace through talking about what happened. Would that be sinful?
@magaman6353
@magaman6353 Год назад
If an employee is stealing goods from a company then a coworker reporting him commits no sin. If a man is running around on his wife, at some point the wife needs to be informed, if the husband refuses to leave off. But if I tell the husband's neighbour who has no business knowing, then it's detraction. If a pastor is abusing a child, then he must be reported. Yes, we have a right to privacy and our good name, but it's not an absolute right, it can lost by our immoral behaviour or grave necessity. If a truck driver is drinking on the job, he forfeits his right to a good name, and needs to be reported. When an potential employer checks out a candidate's references, previous employers are fully justified in discussing their faults.

Dear Fr. Ripperger, How would you differentiate it (detraction) from Prudence? For example, in our neighborhood are prostitutes who passed themselves off as Decent person. So, one who does not know them are preyed upon. When you warn your friends about them or tell them not to be part of their group...isn' that being prudent? Out of concern for your friends , you must warn them for the danger they could be facing if they continue to seek the company of these women who hide their deceitful agenda. Thank you Fr. Ripperger! @lisalapoint7022
@lisalapoint7022 Год назад
The problem with venting is that it gives pleasure, and so becomes a bad habit. I confess to detraction, although when I vent, I am merely stating facts. It is a difficult habit to break when this venting is listing factual injustice. Years ago I worked in a place that was fraught with people who deliberately sought to hurt others with words and actions, and I would vent about it to my closest colleagues in private. It became something that I looked forward to doing because it was a release. Not good. Had I prayed for those people every time instead of venting, it would have been better. I was just as mired in that toxic culture by detracting.
@miracles_metanoia
@miracles_metanoia Год назад
If you need to vent / process emotions, first talk to GOD or spouse or councilor or journal. People who vent excessively, daily or weekly, might have a victim-mentality, overly sensitive, unable to process events with wisdom. It's super draining to be around frequent "venters" since its a negative convo. If you're venting because you're physically in danger or abused, get out of the situation and help. If you're venting because someone does something irritating, then defer to fr ripperger's points.
@Nicole-uq2ul

@lisalapoint7022
@lisalapoint7022 Год назад
@Nicole-uq2ul The supernatural grace that comes from absolution is worth the confession regardless. It gives you grace to be more charitable and to withstand temptation to the more sinful actions related to detracting and gossip in future. If I were you, I would continue to confess it.

Are you venting with coworkers who know and interact with the person? Or are you interacting with friends and family? If you are talking to coworkers, it's probably more of a problem. If you are at a distance from from work and need support and to decompress, it's different, you aren't really at risk of harming the person if you have some degree separation. It's not the best, but it's not particularly grave. Regardless, you should pray for the person.

Soooo.. hypothetically, telling the truth about the Pope's performance as being outside the Faith, with the intention of warning others about the problem in order to protect their souls and without commenting directly about the state of the Pope's soul, would be an admirable and faithful act, would it not? And likewise, not calling out such heresy would be wrong especially for our Bishops and Cardinals?

What about priests ,bishops that are destroying the catholic faith! What about the laity that are their victims. Including the popes?????????

Everyone is speaking about how awful this Pope is. Also certain priests and bishops who have spoken against things, have been let go ie..Fr Altman, and others,because they are too truthful about what is happening to the Catholic church today.

Do you think the sexual abuse scandal especially considering the lavender aspect of it , was facilitated because of the hierarchy fear they were detracting by addressing it more directly vs indirectly or avoiding it , especially if they thought they were overall protecting the reputation of the church.
