I believe he is limping from the prior injury as when I was editing I saw that he was still limping on that leg before he crashed onto it

I would've loved the blue on toothless, and honestly when I was editing some scenes with him he does have a blue tint sometimes but it's been severely changed to black

It helps with balance and control of his body, he couldn't fly properly with it. It's like how the human body could not properly walk if we did not have our big toe, it helps with our balance and without it we'd simply tip over

And like with if you lost a toe in real life, you'd have problems with your balance but you'd recover enough to walk or run, which is why he had trouble escaping in the beginning yet later on in the film he could escape the pit a lot easier, I don't think he'd be able to fly properly without the left tail fin though as night furies are built for speed and it would be theoretically impossible for a night fury to survive or fly properly without a tail fin
