More pressure on the dog is not the answer.

We have a seven month old rescue, had since April. She’s attacking older dog and now her buddy, the four year old. I feel it is so much to keep straight in training, my hubby and I can’t keep it straight abd correct each other constantly. I feel we cannot be trained, so much info in our 60’s. Makes me wish I had no dogs 😢 We hired a trainer but have to wait two weeks. I think I’m just venting here 🤪 Love your videos ❤

That happened with me and my dog in training agility. He really shut down and it was the pressure put on him. I couldn’t understand why at the time and was so disappointed. A good trainer showed us how to take a giant step back, change it up, took the pressure off, went back to very basics, sometimes 2 elements per training session and added in more rewards and made it fun…..for us both. He’s back in spades. We have a great time together.

You are 100% right. Thank you for making this video. Everyone should just look at how happy your dog is. That is what true dog training should look like.

Great, great, great video!! My suggestion is that you pin this to the top of your channel. Any person that has a dog that is going into a down in the situation you described that doesn’t realize their dog is in complete avoidance, and worse it’s in distress, clearly does not understand how to read a dog and does not understand that each dog is an individual and must be treated so while training. There is no, “one size fits all,” in dog training.

The point i think people need to understand is that constructive critisism from a very reliable proven expert in the chosen field of what u want from your dog for is worth its weight in the long term.

I never had a dog before, but figured out very quickly looking at RU-vid...that content from sport dog trainers is far superior to anything else out there. One may need to figure out how dogs learn, to understand what Ivan and similar people are talking about, but those methods are awesome.

Hey Larry. I’m the one who asked the question. First I want to say, thank you for your video. I didn’t even know you had posted it, I guess I don’t have notifications turned on for RU-vid or something because I do subscribe to your channel. Regardless, someone told me about this video and said that I needed to watch it because it was in response to my question. First let me say, I am in no way offended. I am always open to being corrected and to hearing other opinions and learning better methods. I want to do right by my dogs. If there’s a better way of communicating to them, I will always be the first in line to learn. I will look up some of those names that you mentioned and see how they train. I am eager to learn more. With that being said, I do think there was a general misunderstanding in my question and I think it’s because of the way, I worded the question. So my question wasn’t exactly About the force fetch process and how to make the dog pick something up. I think by throwing that example into my question I confused everyone. What I meant to ask, is simply, and this is regardless of the topic or training issue, how do we teach the average dog owner to distinguish between when their dog is shutting down due to too much pressure, versus how to know when the dog is manipulating them? Here’s what I’ll tell you about the scenario in the example that I gave though, it is a first time dog owner who forced fetched his dog, but the dog blows him off a lot. However, the dog absolutely knows the command and knows what is expected. What I see between him and his dog, is the dog runs the show. The guy gives in anytime the dog starts acting soft. And the dog in my humble opinion, and I’m open to being corrected, but in my opinion, the dog has learned to manipulate him when the dog doesn’t want to do what he is being asked to do. This is not a soft dog. It is actually a puppy out of my kennel. The guy lives here locally and I see this dog very frequently. The dog is a hardheaded, stubborn individual. Now, when he doesn’t want to go chase rabbits, he will comply and seems very eager to do so. But, he wanted to go chase rabbits the other night. And so when the dog was told to fetch the bumper, he simply laid down. Other times he will start squealing loudly, even when no pressure is applied to his ear. Both scenarios, the owner gives in. Admittedly, I did take the dog and apply pressure, And once the dog realized he wasn’t going to get away with that, I got quite a few retrieves out of the dog with beautiful deliveries immediately following about a three minute session. You may be thinking that was completely wrong, I shouldn’t have handled it that way. And I would love to hear your thoughts on it, because again, I’m always open to improving and I’m never above being corrected. Even people don’t respect, I will always hear what they have to say and give it consideration. But you should know that I do respect you, and I’m never gonna be so petty as to get offended for a disagreement on something like this. I promise. May I ask your thoughts on this? Thanks for your time.

My question is.. as somebody who’s never taught this exercise.. isn’t it an essential part of training to put the dog in a scenario where he doesn’t want to do an exercise, but he has to, in order to show the dog it’s not optional? Isn’t that where adding pressure is essential? I’m comparing it to any other obedience exercise I’ve taught, where I want the dog to feel good about doing the exercise, condition good feelings to the verbal cue, but at some point put the dog in a situation where I know he doesn’t want to do it and show him that it’s not an option… then go back to heavily positivity reinforcing the exercise in training while mixing in those moments where the dog doesn’t want to but learns he has to perform whether he feels like it or not. Rinse and repeat. This is how I understand achieving reliability of a command.

Yes. You must proof the exercise in multiple situations in order to know the dog understands what you want. Dogs learn in “pictures”. Every time you change the “picture” you need to, in a way reteach/reproof the exercise. Each time you change the picture, you are applying a form of pressure. Even taking a pup from walking in your neighborhood to a different place to walk, that is a form of pressure.

If the dog "knows" the behaviour but is not doing it then it is our responsibility to return to a previous point in the training process that the dog is sure of then work forwards from there again. If the pressure is out on the dog and the dog responds in a different behaviour then it's because the dog simply does not understand what is expected of it. It's not that complicated, dogs are not that complicated!

@NeverPullOutInMexico Happy for Larry to clear it up because that is what I think he is talking about. More pressure thinking they are punishing the dog, but they are really just negatively reinforcing the behaviour they don't want and at the end of the day, the dog suffers.
