I don't have to like it, I don't have to buy it, but I am definitely not going to tell somebody they can't express their artistic desire or speech the way they want. As long it is within the confines of the law, everything goes.

I think questioning one’s consistency across themes is important. I also find the glorification of an “inappropriate” theme, however one may define that, is also a major sticking point. For example, violence in a game may be represented as violence against an evil force, violence as a necessary evil, the sinister enjoyment of partaking in violent acts, etc. Further, a player may even have to take on the role of a violent character however is it teaching a lesson on violence directly or indirectly such as witnessing the damage it causes, simulating its negative effects, or is it simply glorifying it as a good and encouraging its use in real life? In other words, the specific way the theme is represented is a major consideration for at least myself and may explain why some of my board game choices may on the surface appear somewhat inconsistent.

When I got to that question, my initial thought was I had no preference for/against that theme but then realized I had tried but really didn't enjoy any of the examples. I had never put together that theme as a reason why but it made me stop and consider maybe I actually don't like that theme.

The 'H' index rounding is almost certainly people who don't track their board game stats (like me) and just took a random stab at guessing what it would be for them. 5 and 10 seem like a reasonable place to fall if you don't have the stats to back it up

I'm the H-Index of 46! I've been logging plays since mid 2013 and my current goal is to always keep my h-index above my age ... well for at least as long as I can! It's getting slow moving now, as I've caught up to a bunch of games that I no longer own. I would LOVE to have an H-index of just the games I own of 50 by the time I'm 50 ... I have more years for that ... but a lot of work to achieve it ... if not I'll settle for a normal h-index of 50 by then (which will be easily achievable by that many years)

Okay scantily clad women and nude women deserves its own answer. In short I hate it! This has bothered me for a very long time. One of the reasons I took up board games as a hobby was because the themes tended to be fairly wholesome. Around 2012 - 2015 this changed forever. The problem is, many of the games that had promiscuous women were games a liked: Legendary: Marvel, Blood Rage, my favorite game Mythic Battles. There have many times when I will pass on a game because of this feature, and the desire to play it is not strong enough to bother. On the games I do have, I have worked with my 3 daughters to come up with solutions. If it is one person, sometimes I will remove them. There have been times when we have put stickers over them, and others where we have used a marker. The unfortunate truth is I don’t think most people care, and most of the games themes I gravitate towards promote this. I have to evaluate and make a judgement call each time, and I hate it! But, if it continues to get worse, then I will draw the line and find something else I enjoy. There are plenty of games out there.

For me, a significant dynamic is: does this game / movie / whatever influence me toward bad (to me) behavior. Watching Gladiator is not going to influence me toward violence. I feel no moral movement toward violence from watching it. Lust, drunkenness, thievery, are all much more morally immediate to me, so I’m more careful or stay away from these themes. You can make war or violence look really cool, it won’t make me engage in it. You can make a hedonistic lifestyle look cool and attractive, that’s something I could choose to engage in, so that’s much more concerning to me personally.

I still don't understand the H-Index. If I own 100 games, If I've only played some once, and some none, then what's would the H-Index be? Zero? Of if there six games I own and have played six times, is it six? No idea.
@buddyberglund
@buddyberglund Месяц назад
It's kind of neither. It doesn't really have anything to do with games you own, just that you've played, and it doesn't matter if you've played some of your games zero times. An H-index of 6 just means that you've played 6 different games (owned or not) at least 6 times. If you've played 7 games at least 7 times, but haven't played 8 games at least 8 times, that's an H-index of 7. For an H-index of 42, you would have had to have played 42 different games at least 42 times each. It's the total number of games that you've played at least that many times. Sadly, that's the best way I can think to describe it. So, if you've played one game 1000 times, another game 100 times, and every other game in the world only 2, 1, or 0 times, your H-index would only be 2, because you would have only played 2 games at least 2 times, but as soon as you've played that third game for the third time, your H-index jumps to 3. Hope that kind of helps.

I think that every creator has the right to try and express their art and ideas. Ultimately the market may exist for that art/theme or the market may be small. My personal opinions will direct me to either spend and support those artistic creations or not. I can’t and shouldn’t demand that things shouldn’t exist simply because it goes against my personal convictions. I also greatly take into account my family as they are whom I primarily play board games with. My two young daughters are very sensitive to things that may be scary so I have to be careful with what will end up in my collection. Even right now I’m very interested in Deep Regrets and Corps of Discovery, but they both have some bloody and graphic visuals that I have to consider instead of simply backing because I like the gameplay. I also won’t simply back a game because it’s a theme I like either. I have to see the fun and theme as something that will work for me and my family.

Just responded to the poll, mainly with "doesn't affect". May main thought on theme is: depends on how it relates to the mechanisms. I like the theme to be deftly sketched, so that it helps me get into and understand the game. Yes, Knizia is my favorite designer. Thru the Desert and Samurai are among my favorite games. In both, the theme and the components complement and support the design. (HiG/RG edition of S.) I tend to dislike games in which the theme feels like distracting brushstrokes, getting between me and the art of the game design. I recently played my second and last game of Saint Petersburg. I like Castles of Burgundy less than it probably deserves.

I find these questions very hard to answer, because a lot of them fall into two possible options. Colonization for instance, I like it less if it glorifies or is insensitive about colonization, but I do like it more if it is respectfully dealing with the subject (like Freedom, the underground railroad). Same for adult themes and nudity, I like it less if it's disrespectful to woman, objectifying them, but definitely not because of prudeness. So in short, the theme or subject doesn't matter to me, it's all about how the theme is handled, especially with sensitive themes.

Great poll, for me personally, what puts me off is not exactly the theme in itself, but also whether I feel the game is too close to home. I am against violence in general, but I don't mind playing gloomhaven and star wars rebellion. Cause it's a make believe world I was born in a country that was colonized for 300 years. That was almost 80 years ago. But my family was an immigrant, the idea is quite a distance from me. John Company does not bother me. I'm a Christian. I don't mind playing ankh Cyclades, cause they are mythology, not real. I don't mind playing games with "demons". In fact I own Massive Darkness and dungeon lords. Settings is in a fantasy world and I have a different idea of what demons look like. Games like Blood on the clocktower theme-wise is closer to home, but I will play it if invited. Arkham Horror feels to close to home at me. I live in another side of the world where we can witness the workings of black magic. One I am feeling uncomfortable playing. In a world where people earns tons of money from OF and other similar sites, nightshift is also too close to home. Theme in a game is very important to me. Will I enjoy playing the game? No, I don't think I will have that satisfaction of being the best stripper. But if I don't take the game seriously, I may be able to get a good laugh or two. But not ones I am eager to play. But what makes this game distasteful to me is because the creator is trying to normalize being a sex worker. Don't get me wrong, I understand why many people have to take odd jobs or even sometimes have to steal and murder. But those jobs are the ones people should avoid if given other alternatives.

Interesting questions. Generally speaking, I trend towards games that have active combat situations (grid based combat, representative figures/minis, etc), but abstracted combat is also fine. While potentially suggestive games (I'm waiting for my "all the Tanto Cuore games" Kickstarter to come in) can hold some fun for me, I find it's more that the themes of fantasy and anime trend towards dressing women suggestively (and some men, though it's arguable whose fantasy that one is), and less that the specific sexualizing of the woman is what I'm playing for or looking for. The fact that Thor in Kamigami Battles is a busty, muscled Viking gal is more of a perk and less of a driver for getting it than the gameplay. And in fact, provided I like how a game looks like it will play, theming will almost always come secondary to gameplay. This goes with video games as well as tabletop games. Also, if a theme does stand out to me (fantasy, anime, sci-fi, franchises from my childhood, mythology, etc being themes that I commonly go towards), if the gameplay isn't any good then I'm not going to be interested in the game for long, and if I can see the game being played beforehand, I probably won't even get it at all. On the topic of Nightshift, I'm not entirely sure that the mechanics of the game hold enough appeal to me, though some small spiteful part of me wants to back the game simply because people were bothered by the theme. But at the end of the day, I want games I'm going to play, or at least games whose mechanics make me look forward to playing them, and while it looks like it has some tactical choices, I'm not so sure I'm driven by the choices provided? It could also be that the theme not being one I'd usually pick (too real world) along with the less than compelling mechanics might provide some understanding of what keeps me from wanting to back the game. The theming of it being stripping in particular isn't the thing that's off-putting, in other words, but rather that any real world themes are less likely to gain my interest (i.e. real world wars, running of businesses, real world working situations, etc don't really drive my interest). Still, I'm not entirely decided yet, I still need to go back and take a closer look. If a game seemed to be aiming at being offensive or dismissive towards women, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, various ethnic groups and religions related to them, etc? Now THAT could easily get me to ignore the game instantly. But then, considering the games I usually gravitate towards, that doesn't really matter much, since those issues don't exactly show up in games I trend towards being interested in. On this point, while I'm not going to say that someone CAN'T use such pointedly offensive things in a game, I will say that using them is meant to cause offense, and so the creator couldn't be surprised if offense was taken and sales were impacted as a result. Basically, if you make a game out of being cruel to the disenfranchised, you should expect the blowback that comes with being a cruel person.
@Zomerdromen
@Zomerdromen Месяц назад
I found these difficult to answer as for most it's not really the theme that makes me like it more or less, but the mechanisms it usually comes with. For example I don't care much for games about violence because I don't like very competitive games or games with negative player interaction. I also don't care for any of the 'adult humour' stuff because those are often party games that just don't interest me. In neither case is the theme what throws me off. With gods or dating it's the other way around: I find the themes interesting but haven't found a lot of games in those categories that I actually liked gameplay-wise.

I'm enjoying this question series and appreciate this group of questions. In the past year or so I have been examining these same topics in my personal gaming. I'm a very conservative Christian and I am frequently weighing theme/ art/ mechanics for games I play or have in my collection. I find myself steering away from violence, horror, witches, sorcery and adult themes, but I do enjoy combat and fantasy. Specific examples have been "Night of the Ninja" where I initially had concerns about assassination of other players and several other roles. But, after watching video plays and trying it with my group, we decided we enjoyed it. I played Death May Die once, even though I didn't like the theme. That confirmed not wanting to play that kind of game or one with that topic. I've had to re-home many games people have given me because the topic or NSFW nature wasn't my taste. But I do try to give them a chance and I think I'm establishing my personal boundaries. Some things are a complete turn-off for me, but I don't believe I need to eliminate them from existence.

I play a lot of historical wargames. By definition it's a horrific subject that often involves someone having to play Nazi's, Confederates, colonizers, etc. I typically have no problem with this because it's abstract enough. 3:18 I took issue with the H-Index question. To me, unless you log every single play throughout your board gaming career - you are not going to know specifically how many times you play your games and where it intersects with the number of games you have played. This would therefore mean that likely, over time, if you continue adding to it, you could say that you have played 100 games over 100 times, for example... To me, when we talk about the H-Index, we are talking about over a certain period of time, such as from the beginning of this year - January to June - is 6 months - for example, you could say that you played 20 games 20 times (for example). Also, as far as the way you free-styled the question - I think it would have made more sense to do multiple-choice and give ranges, like: 0-10 10+-25 25+-50 50+-75 75+-100 100+

I found this questionaire interesting. Most of the time it doesn't have any impact, I really don't care, but there seems to be some interesting opinions: I think the place where it's hard to really get the point across is HOW it's done in a game. I would have no problem playing a war game and being the Axis, but I would never really want to play Secret Hitler, or any game where you are being a Nazi that isn't abstracted in a war game style, or where Nazis are the enemy, because killing Nazis is always a good idea. I think the context matters so much, as there are so many World War games, and we abstract that, and I've enjoyed many abstracted games (tabletop and video), but none of them ever really get into the attrocities that happened during those wars, and I think that would be a step too far. I hope we never see games about genocide. I think context would be important for most subjects.

So, the new series of questions is going to be tough, because it's hard to answer them in the spirit in which I think they are intended. For example, I will usually not play games with a religious theme. However, it's not remotely because I think the theme is problematic. It's more because I don't usually find games with that theme are very interesting or enjoyable, and because I don't find the theme intriguing to me, personally. So, I would be much less likely to play a game with that theme, but not necessarily because of the reason you're asking. As another example: the theme of abstracted violence. Using the examples you gave, I can say I am much less likely to play those games, but in that case, it's because those types of games have mechanisms that I don't enjoy, like area control, and PvP. So, how do I separate the fact that the theme frequently informs the mechanisms in that sense, and that the theme of violence doesn't matter to me as much? Also, as a slight side note, it's interesting that you separated religious, demons/devils, and gods into different categories, because thematically, I'm much more interested in playing a game that has just demons, or that has gods, than playing a game that has (for example) angels and demons, for some reason, so the separation actually works for me. However, again, it's more a personal interest thing than an "I find one more problematic or offensive" thing.

I find most of the time that games that have over the top adult themes are not enjoyable because the over the top sexuality is the selling point of the game, and the actual gameplay falls flat (CAH, Unstable Unicorns nsfw). The biggest thing for me is that every game is an abstract game for me, no matter what the theme is. I rarely read flavor text. I rarely use the flavor words for bits and pieces (when I play Expeditions, the tracks are orange and green, not guile and power). Most violence in games falls under video or comic book violence. That said, Undaunted is probably not a game I will enjoy as it is a bit too real life, but Illumination intrigues me with it's theme of monks copying manuscripts.

I find Cards Against Humanity fun specifically because of how entirely random answers get, not unlike how random Apples to Apples can get, and it's just a matter of more or less adult humor in each of them. However, I looked at the NSFW Unstable Unicorns expansion and was just uninterested, because it just didn't do anything with the NSFW content. It was being crude simply to be crude, with what felt like no rhyme or reason or even sense of humor (another part of CAH I can enjoy, the humor). If a game had clearly 18+ adult themes and good mechanics, I could understand enjoying it because gameplay is my primary driver, themes are usually secondary (but not a non-issue, i.e. I would read flavor text, I would say colors and track names interchangeably most likely, etc). But I wouldn't specifically only get a game for its adult theme; if the gameplay isn't interesting, the game isn't interesting to me.

I am more likely to play a game that seems fun and I like the mechanisms. All the other stuff doesn’t really matter to me. I do like games like Cards against Humanity for the laughs not the game play so I would choose that because It is fun answering the questions not the game play. Thanks for being interested.

I'm going to be very neutral with my answers to this one, simply because I generally enjoy games based upon their gameplay with little regard to their theme and artwork. A great example for me is Mythic Mischief, where I absolutely love the game but dislike the theme of high school kids messing with each other.

I might have been the person that skipped the first question, opps lol. I only have three sleeved games and the reason is they are the only three I consider to expensive to replace - Vindication Big Box, Everdell Big Box and Return to Dark Tower. I was stuck on what to answer for that question, so I skipped it and meant to go back, now I wonder if I forgot

The type of themes that turn me off to a game are things I can, or could have done in real life. So making sushi, riding trains, fishing, farming, driving, ect. If I wanted to do the normal life thing I’d do it. Unless you add some secondary fantasy, scifi, horror into the the boring theme. I might, although haven’t, take issue if a game was clearly pushing religion or a political narrative.

I find inappropriate sexual themes in board games to be “cringe”. Boardgamegeek currently has a couple of games in the hotness with extremely cringe themes that appeal to the “sexopoly” crowd, that focuses on shock and awe as opposed to a solid game. Just doesn’t do it for me. Over the top adult sexual themes are usually just that: over the top

Weird question about abstracted violence. Many of us have played chess which is abstracted violence with knights and queens and pawns (soldiers) killing each other.

Religion - probably a big difference in responses between modern real world religion themes vs fictional or ancient religion. I see a lot of people avoiding real current religions in games, but hardly anyone who avoids fictional or Egyptian etc

Battles don’t bother me, as a military historian buff, that’s a plus 😉. There is no violence in these games. You can find implied violence, but it is not present. Eliminating figures does represent death, but it is so far removed from reality, it is not in the same realm as shooting someone in a video game. Hate is a no. I’ve never played Whitechapel, but I think it would bother me…at least the first time I’m exposed to it. Colonization doesn’t bother me in a game. I don’t really won’t to play a game where I am a terrible historical figure. Axis and Allies doesn’t apply, because it’s an army, same with Memoir ‘44 and others. I’m religious, but most religious games don’t bother me. I love mythology so that doesn’t bother me. Magic & sorcery don’t bother me. However, I’m not really interested in playing games that revel in darkness. I think Awaken Realm rides this line, but doesn’t cross it for me. Some themes can be fantastical and still dark. Dead of Winter and Mansions of Madness are other games that ride the line, but doesn’t cross it. I will not play games that revel in gross material, debauchery, satanic practices, or other such themes. Dating isn’t a theme that interests me. I’ve played Obsession, which to me is more about Jane Austen than dating. I like playing Pursuit of Happiness with my family, where dating is a small element. No Kingdom Death Monster, and Middara’s women did bother me a bit. No adult theme, that’s not what I want to play or what I want to play.

I put Agricola on the previous survey. Catan was the first game that the precursor to my gaming group played. But I don’t consider that my gateway game because if we hadn’t played Agricola it’s likely we would have stopped at a few plays of Catan. Agricola made it a regular thing and a hobby. Catan was like monopoly, a game I’d played that wasn’t strong enough to make me a board gamer. On the new survey, there are two examples of games I don’t enjoy existing. I wouldn’t say that I don’t want others to play this games, I just wish I didn’t have to know they exist. (1) The game currently in the hotness featuring a part of the male anatomy. (2) The wave of offensive party games following cards against humanity - like asians against sobriety - I find that title very offensive (and I’m not Asian).

Most of these questions are going to be answered with a personal bias involved, meaning answers should skew all over the place. I loved Greek Gods and Horror movies growing up, so I have a more likely wanting to play those types of games. I also have no issues with inappropriate humor, so I find NSFW games fun. Dating themes and the like are topics that are sort of lame to me so I wouldn't bother with them unless the theme was unique enough. Big difference between lame and simply taking offense to them though. Now, games with stripped themes I just think would be a cash grab more than anything, seeing I don't think a serious board game designer would think that the theme would make for a good game, so I would steer clear simply for that reason. Might be great to get the crowdfunding, but as we know, crowdfunding doesn't reward the best games, it rewards minis and awkward themes. Unless someone is an activist, I would think most answers would be neutral, with some answers being skewed towards personal bias based on subject matter than is nostalgic to ones upbringing. I bet most is a case by case otherwise though.

Alex, you're trying to find people's line on bias, but fell into a bias yourself that MANY of the activists on BGG and other social media sites fall into. Many people talk about sexualizing women, like a thread that started because one of the Tiny Epic games had a KS with "sexualized" women on it, with those same people clutching their pearls having no issues with sexualizing men. There is a difference though between your bias and theirs, in that YOU aren't personally making waves and attempting to ruin lives and careers over what is simply a "cause". I honestly think that at the bottom of this very video and all of the questions you have is one simple premise, how biased is a person, and do they bring their biases into the hobby. More now than ever political biases are causing all sorts of waves in every aspect of culture, with most of it being bad. People are attempting to "right a wrong" or sensitivity, by actively destroying lives and businesses based on their very skewed opinions on what or how other people with just opposing opinions or views should be called or treated. Nightshift is getting a lot of attention because of it's underlying tribal political bias more than anything.
