More Scenery Work With Sand, Dirt, And Ballast (157)

Now we're coming to the dirty work on the layout, spreading a bunch sand, dirt, and ballast around. Then we'll saturated it with wet water or alcohol, and stick it down using white glue, PVA, or Mod Podge. It looks like a total mess but when it dries the mix of textures, and colors gives it a natural look. So let's get started.

Thank you so much for this video, as it is very timely for me! I'll soon be adding ground cover on my small layout, and I was concerned about using a spray bottle as most scenery how-tos do. I will certainly be using your eyedropper method with bagged sand from the hardware store. Merry Christmas!

I used backyard dirt on mine too but in order to speed drying and to kill any possible microorganisms in the dirt, I microwaved it first. Just a thought.

Gary , 3 to 1 mixture , 3 parts water one part glue
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 года назад
For the base glue I would use about 10 parts glue and 1 part water to keep it from drying too fast. For the “scenic cement” I would use about 3 parts water to 1 part glue as you suggest.

I don't even use wet-water anymore, Isopropyl alcohol works so much better. Normally it is readily available and very inexpensive. Covid-19 put a little hiccup in the supply for a few months, but it seems to be readily available again. Thanks< Russ from Oregon.

Larry , Watching you use a spoon to spread the gravel/sand, have you ever considered using salt & pepper shakers. They have different size holes one finer than the other so a person would be able to work with various sizes of granules.
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 года назад
I have a shaker made for baking but the sieve just isn’t big enough. I think what might work is one of those shakers you find in Italian restaurants with the big holes for Parmesan cheese. I just asked my wife about these and she gave me her extra one so we’ll see how it works Friday!

No that area is to be mostly bare earth and gravel. I’ll be using foam scatter and static grass on the green portions. Happy holidays.

Would a spray bottle work for applying the IPA, wet-water, or even the dilute scenery cement rather than a plastic pipette?
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy Год назад
Yes, and I have used one on occasion. However the spray can end up in places you don’t necessarily want. Even worse it will blow scenery material away so you have to hold it high enough above the work surface to prevent that. So I find a pipette gives me much better control.

Hi Larry, I have a question on your use of brushes. I’ve done painting from outside houses, real not modeling, to plastic model cars, planes, etc., latex to Pactra enamels. Brushes of various sizes and bristles, some I’ve cleaned for future use and others must be pitched for one reason or another. Watching you in this video the brush looks similar, or is it the same, that you used to apply the green and tan base. So my question is, how often do you reuse a brush? It appears you’re using the same brush for different products? I’m sure you’ve cleaned it in between applications. The bristles on your brushes do not appeared to have flared out from use. I’ll reuse a brush if I can clean it good and then wrap the bristles with paper or cloth depending on what it was used with, and put it back in the sleeve it came in. This works for a while but eventually I have to get new. A little info on this would be helpful. Thanks, Bill
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 года назад
Bill-those are the cheap throw away brushes they sell at Lowe’s. However I do wash them thoroughly after each use and then hang to dry so they don’t flare out. I use it until it looks ratty then toss and get out a new one. Almost all my products are water soluble so a little warm water and liquid soap cleans them up fast.

Hi Larry - Great Tutorial on ground cover. Do you think play sand will work for N Scale or would the granuals be to large?
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 8 месяцев назад
I have actually seen N scalers use play sand for ballast since it can look so large. You can of course find finer sand from Woodland Scenics just for N scale and there are a lot of home products that are very fine and could substitute in small amounts. Fine sugar, baking soda, etc. may work but I would do a test first with whatever cement you plan to use just to make sure it dries to look the way you want. Good luck.

OK, I misunderstood which you were referring to. Those are the cheap throw away brushes they sell in the paint dept at Lowes. I wash them out after each use and they last a long time and are cheap, one of my primary requirements! 🤫

Hey Larry, great video. Can you tell me if there is a DIY option to making scultamold such as cellulose insulation and plaster combination?
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 года назад
There are a number of RU-vid videos and websites on that so do a Google search. Be aware though that Sculptamold apparently has a proprietary formula that no one has matched. Besides the stuff is cheap at Walmart, etc.

Merry Christmas. Did you use regular art sand for this? You don't have any concern with sucking the sand up into the locomotive gears?
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 года назад
It is playsand for use in kids sandboxes. It really is no more a problem that using very fine ballast or any other fine material such as those sold by Woodland Scenics or Scenic Express. Once the glue dries I vacuum up any loose stuff and the rest stays put. The thing to look out for is any materials that have enough iron in them to be attracted to magnets. When I make up my own material I run a magnet through it just to be sure. I have a large amount of ballast I sifted from paver gravel which has so much iron it literally will cover a magnet run through it.

Excellent video as always. Is your 3 to 1 ratio of Mod Podge, 3 parts water to 1 part Mod Podge...Or 3 parts Mod Podge to 1 part water? Thanks as always. It's been a while since I have done scenery and I have forgotten how I used to cut my White glue after the grass or sand is done..... Phil Jersey Shore Area.

3 pt water, 1 pt Mod Podge, 2-4 drops liquid soap. Some use other ratios so experiment to see what you like.

Yes, it just is impossible to cover the range of scales but a lot of what I put out can be used in various scales. In this video scenery is scenery.
