Many kids around the country will have a different schedule when they head back to school this fall, with a growing number of school districts switching to a four-day week. CBS News' Bradley Blackburn explains it's an approach some districts are taking in response to the nationwide teacher shortage.

@@christinah.8504 A Little of both. The school system is somewhat a daycare system to teach and take care of kids while they go to work for 5 days a week. The school employees office staff, caretakers, would also not be required for 20% of the school week as they are not required on weekends. Take the 20% savings to fund non teacher programs at the schools on Fridays for parents that need to work full time.

I told my son he could be anything he wanted in life, except a teacher. Teaching is THE worst profession in this country. Teachers are overworked, grossly underpaid, not appreciated, stressed, sometimes threatened, and more. I'd rather see him scrubbing floors. A school custodian makes almost as much money as a teacher, doesn't have to go to school for eight years, and has no huge responsibility because teaching is NEVER just teaching.

@@charlesfriscia7236you can if they pay you correctly. If they would bother to raise the minimum wage and actually pay employees fair then you can easily live off of it. The irony is you saying that if I can't afford it because you refuse to pay me fairly for the job that I do then somehow it's my fault that you're screwing me over. The hypocrisy is real. At the end of the day it's not about whether or not I can survive off of an income and have a four-day work week. It's objectively proven that I can. So the real question is whether your company is going to do what's right or whether I'm going to have to make you according to the law

I love seeing the two different sides of the argument from people who actually were students and who actually care about the kids in general so they understand that a four-day school week is important and then there's all the selfish ugly parents who don't want to take care of their kids just complaining that their kids aren't going to have anywhere to go because they want the school to take care of them. People who are so stupid they think that we have to cut teacher salaries just because we're doing a four-day school week. People who will use that as an excuse for why we can't do a four-day school week instead of just being smart and realizing we could increase teacher pay

I definitely noticed my kid when they have an extra day off for long weekend.. he more well rested and ready for a better productive week ahead. Also the school day should be shorter as well. Our kids spend way too long in school and it doesn’t seem to make any difference.

If you gonna do 4 days. GET RID of Wednesday. You can give a lot of HW on tuesday. So they are Busy that day off doing HW. And you can do ZOOM Tutorials. Monday is a BAD IDEA. I worked in tha Schools tha last 2 years. When I had a WED off. I was RECHARGED and EVERYBODY was More Efficient on Thurs and Friday. Definitely MORE Productive when you 2 on, 1 off

If you think COVID online classes hurt the students just wait until you shorten the week. The results will not fully be seen for about three years. Just retired after 26 years in public school and this is not the answer. First look a pay, student discipline and work ethic, parent involvement, extra testing and record keeping for the teacher, and lack of a rigorous grade system without retaining those who are not even close to grade level and do not have a cognitive problem.

In my opinion from a students perspective this will probably end up horribly. First off coming off from the pandemic we’re having low test scores and kids not paying attention in class. With this being added it will only add more salt to the wound since no we have less days to learn and understand now. Not to mention teachers salaries will probably become significantly lower now too which is bad since it’s already low for them.

Well if you're taking this from a student's perspective than you're one-hundred-percent objectively wrong. From a student's perspective this is inherently a good thing. It is been objectively proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that a four-day school week will improve mental acuity and ability. I don't disagree with you that we should just pay teachers more. I honestly don't see why as a student I have to suffer though just so that you can have a teacher working for an extra day of the week just so you can have an excuse to pay them money when you could just pay them more anyway and we wouldn't have to make them work harder.

What they expect out of teachers is unrealistic. 4 days would definitely help teachers plan lessons. This may improve student behavior as well which is the reason most teachers leave the field.

The irony here really being that a four-day school week is actually mentally and physically better for children and students. And it also helps the teachers too. My favorite part about this is that everyone seems to think that we can't have both a four-day school week and pay teachers more. That it seems that people only seem to understand that if we give teachers a four-day school week then that means we can cut their salary. Somehow you people think that's how it works and it's not at all how it works. If you choose to cut teachers salaries just because you're changing to a four-day work week that makes you the school system a terrible school system because you individually are taking away money from the teachers. You should be forced to pay your teachers more and you should be forced to do a four-day school week. These are not mutually exclusive of each other.

Why would you shorten a school week after students having unstable learning through a pandemic, low scores nationwide, and poor fundamental reading and math skills. This makes no sense, unless your district is all or mostly year round. And is that daycare $30 a family or per child? Sounds like a hustle, rather than a care for children. 🤔

I like the idea of going to school year round. Only have four day school weeks. A week off at Thanksgiving. Regardless of when it falls, have two weeks off at Christmas. A week for spring break, maybe two. Two weeks off during the summer.

I choose to be productive, I'm 19 so I can't speak for all y'know, i go fishing, walking, etc. I agree many kids these days are too lazy to even go to the laundromat and wash their clothes, I live in a rural area so it's really not that dangerous here.

The districts I know that have gone to 4 days have added more student contact time and the teachers are required to put in 10 hour days. Teachers are paid based on a certain number of contracted days they work each year and are not paid for spring, summer or Christmas breaks. They are not paid overtime for all the work they do beyond those contracted days. BTW, if teaching is a great "racket", why do you suppose teachers are leaving the profession in droves?

That's really interesting considering that everyone understands that teachers are remarkably underpaid and incredibly overworked. But it's actually impressive to see somebody so stupidly argue against teachers. Of course a four-day school week is just an overall benefit for everyone. It's a necessity really. Ironically everyone is mostly arguing that the teachers would have a loss of income due to the four-day work week. Ironically none of them coming to the conclusion that you can just raised teachers salaries without having to oppose a 4 say school week
