Rare archive footage some poor quality and some good of my favourite railway junction of all time , Folkestone Junction with boat trains coming up and down to the harbour, some footage too at Dover Priory, a mixture of black and white and colour film is shown. This is the second time I have put up archival material from this location , the first being in 2008 and is still on my channel. I advise watching on the RU-vid screen rather that your full size screen if you have a PC as that will enhance your viewing pleasure. The link for the original video is

The Dover sections probably date from my mum's childhood in Dover. The run through the Warren is my favourite ride - it meant holiday time was almost begun as we got nearer to Dover.

I'm Folkestone born and bred and it's lovely to see the old Harbour branch line that runs along The Tram Road in Folkestone in use. My dad's house backs onto that line, and even after the steam locos were changed for diesels they still needed an engine at either end to get the train up the incline. I believe it's a 1in4 gradient, and one of the steepest in the country.

Thanks for watching and commenting as a child Mum and Dad went to Folkestone for our holidays from 1956-1961 so the harbour branch was well known to me and I have many happy memories, all the best Stewart

Nice to look back in history when these were busy ports for the Railway , I used to sail out of Folkestone years ago and could see the tracks the railway used in to the port , they had finished by that time , but seem to remeber when about 12 years of age i went on the Ferry to Boulogne and the train was running then ...cheers fro the memory jolt ..Dave

Fabulous piece of old film...! How different things were back then. When you see an old film like that, particularly when most of it is in colour, you just want to step into it, and go back in time to simpler times..! Excellent stuff....!

Hi Stewart, How it used to be its good to see and remember and where I live now there are still rails across the road from Harwich station going to the loading tower for the trains to Holland I hope at some stage it will be presurved but time I would think is running out. Thanks for keeping these old movies going in the 21st century. Cheers Robert.

Thanks for posting this video Stewart. Great to see those little R1 0-6-0s in action. Remember the Hornby Dublo/Wrenn models of those locos - surprised no one has updated and released them in finescale form.

Thanks Andrew when the GWR panniers in 1959 arrived they only needed three locos instead of four R1's and yes it would be a good model to revive ! Stewart

Hi, just wondered if you would know, what livery the R and R1 tanks wore on the harbour branch during Maunsell's tenure, I have looked at all your awesome videos but I can't work it out, maybe you could advise if you know? regards and thanks Terry PS loved your recording of the E1---one loco I truly wish they would consider for a new build!!!

Why were there GWR panniers tanks on the Folkestone harder branch?
@hollpoll

The R1 tanks which worked the branch previously were life expired so surplus GWR panniers were transferred there for a couple of years before the Kent Coast electrification was completed, thanks for watching and commenting.
