How the council destroyed some of our hedges, some plum trees and a walnut tree in order to make the road 'extra' wide to accommodate a rally of old timer military vehicles that spent 10 minutes in a field in the middle of nowhere, and which no one saw. Widening the road by cutting back the foliage made absolutely no difference. Not only that but they destroyed a clump of extremely rare lizard orchids that I had cordoned off to protect them.

I am so sorry and feel your unhappiness. So much destruction for nothing. Lets hope somehow the lizard orchids may manage to regenerate for next year and the branches of the trees and hedges grow back in due course. Nature can be very resilient sometimes.

Absolutely, Jean, I'm not so bothered about the hedgerows and trees, this stuff will grow back, but I am really sad about that cluster of lizard orchids. I too sure hope they will come back again.

Thats plane crazy .Why not just cut an opening to the field if its not been opened for years But Andrew I have cut back hedges not cut for 35years down to 5ft as a stump and all grown back .Give it a year and as we say after knife becomes growth.

Indeed, Ian, I've seen hedges regenerate around my sister's area in Dorset along those narrow country lanes. My objection here is that they left so much mess for us to clear up. Cutting back so far into our land was not necessary, not actually allowed even by the council and served no purpose.

There are no words . The damage done looks very like the things that happen here in UK. Locally a sign was put up not to mow as there were orchids and they almost took it as an invitation - all gone. Bastards. All of Croatia to choose where it wouldn't be necessary to destroy and for what ???? Men and their toys and for 10 minutes of showing off . Despicable. I'm sorry you had to suffer seeing this Andrew

Indeed, I am really gutted. We sent a message to our mayor this morning and immediately got a reply! He will visit us and see the damage. Maybe he can put some preservation order onto that meadow to preserve the lizard orchid, though its too late to save that cluster. Our hedges will survive but the orchids need protection otherwise I shall embarrass the hell out of them!

I feel your pain about the Lizard orchids Andrew. My other half Pete says keep an eye on what grows back, sometimes that sort of destruction can open up the seed bank. There may be a positive x

I hope Pete is a wise man. Where those four orchids were growing there was, last year, the tallest lizard orchid I had ever seen, at around 40-50 cms. Still, it is heart breaking so see such pointless destruction. The hedges and trees will grow back but my focus is really on the orchids.

@@andrewnorris2 I remember from my ecology module on my degree, that sometimes seeds can lie dormant for decades and the seed bed being opened up or disturbed can allow the seeds to grow and so I hope that next year you will be lucky and have more than 4 lizard orchids and you can take some film and share it with us, I’ve never seen a lizard orchid. Let’s hope.

Yes, it really is, Phillip, I'm just so sad about the orchids. Our hedges will grow back but there is no guarantee the orchids will.

Totally reckless and mindless. Speak of merciless beings - there they are. Sorry about the damage. Mark
@andrewnorris2
@andrewnorris2 Год назад
Well, Mark, the damage will repair itself but I was really sorry about the orchids. But what was upsetting was that this was done purely to facilitate this rally, which no one saw, and in the end was completely unnecessary.

Maybe the guy doing the cutting was just following orders, or was rather too zealous. The county mayor is going to visit us after we complained to inspect the damage so maybe he can put some kind of preservation order on the lizard orchid meadow. In any case I'll keep you posted.

Could the Orchids be transplanted if the grow again ? Sad news Andrew.
@andrewnorris2
@andrewnorris2 Год назад
You know, I have absolutely no idea. I don't even know how they grow, from bulbs, from rhizomes, how? They seem to pop up in this same location but not always in the same exact place. Curiously, just opposite from where my 'cordoned' off orchids were destroyed I found a clump of 6 in total, four in one group and two in the other. I hope to do a live from my meadow on Sunday 2pm, uk time, but I'll film a short notice beforehand from where these orchids are. Hope you join me (weather permitting)

Someone in that group had political power. Hence the rapid cleanup done roughly.
@andrewnorris2
@andrewnorris2 Год назад
Most of the clean up was done by us, actually William, but we are in touch with the local mayor who will visit and see the damage done, and maybe slap a preservation order on the only meadow where the lizard orchid grows!
