Weight : 6.8oz
Color : Army Green with black blade to prevent rusting
Measurements : 7” blade. 9” handle. Roughly 15.5” long 3 1/4 “ diameter grips
This is an infamous tool and it is revered because of the excellent performance as well as excellent price.
9 inch carbon steel blade with 7 TPI (teeth per inch).
Additional blades can be purchased if need be but they are expensive - $25
A general purpose folding saw for cutting both green and dry wood, plastic, bone etc. Specially designed for wild-life enthusiasts, hunting and campers. XT toothing, 7TPI. Blade specially coated for rust protection and low friction. Two-component plastic handle for perfect grip, with leather strap. Safety lock, locked also when folded.
The Bahco 9-inch Laplander folding saw has seven teeth per inch and is a general-purpose folding saw for cutting both green and dry wood, plastic, or bone. This saw is specially designed for wildlife enthusiasts, hunters, and campers. The blade is specially coated for rust protection and low friction. The handle is a two-component plastic handle for perfect grip, complete with a leather strap. This saw features a safety lock, which also locks when folded.
Review :
I purchased this saw back in 2013 and that means that this is a long term review. Almost 10 years of use and I’ll tell you this, this is a fantastic tool!
Even after all of these years, it continues to be an excellent tool. Highly efficient, very sharp, very strong, great quality.
Pros :
Legendary quality
Rubbery Handle offers excellent grip. The Bahco Laplander’s handle is made of a hard plastic with a rubber over-mold. It’s very grippy, and the palm swell towards the butt of the saw makes it very comfortable to grip.
Leather lanyard allows for easy hanging of the tool in your camp.
Blade locks into place - both open and closed
Blade tension can be adjusted - a friend of mine runs his so loose that he can flick it open while pushing in the lock.
Teeth are extremely sharp and have stayed sharp after almost 10 years of use. Cuts on the push and pull
Very versatile tool, I’ve used it around the house, I’ve used it for bushcraft trips, I use it for backpacking and camping adventures.
Cuts through everything that I have ever wanted to cut through including black locust. Dry wood, green, etc.
Weight is a huge plus for this tool; namely because it is so light weight. It’s what I call perfect. Light enough to throw into your pocket or pack and yet heavy enough to feel solid. To put weight into perspective, I have simple multitools which weigh much more than this.
Compact
Replaceable blades is a pro but they are expensive and it looks to take a substantial amount of time to receive them if ordered. From what I have seen online, it looks like they come from outside of the country.
With the 7” blade, it is an ideal tool for 4 inch logs and saplings. You can process larger but you’re really pushing the limits of the blade size. For anything larger, that’s when I would move to a bow saw.
Durability; durability of the teeth isn’t an issue at all and I haven’t babied it. Handle has held up extremely well.
Laplander’s handles are grippy - rubberized and stays in the hand.
Leather lanyard is appreciated and it too has held up well.
Cons :
To be honest, I don’t have any cons to mention with the tool itself. It is simply a top notch product that I can’t recommend enough. The price is good, the value is great, the size is great, its sharp, tough, comfortable to use,

Myself, I prefer a 10 inch saw because it still fits in a pack fine, but cuts larger diameter logs, and weighs only a small amount more. The teeth on the bahco are comparatively small, which is an advantage for starting the saw, but more aggressive teeth cut faster. They don't work as well in green wood, however. There are a lot of saws out there and they all do a good job. For me, though, I prefer a 10 inch.

What do you use it for? This seems like an incredible saw, and pretty cheap to add to my kit, but I just don't know what I would use it for. Sometimes I wish I could break down fat logs into a more fire-friendly size, but in the video he says 4 inches is the sweet spot, which a fat log would be. Keep in mind that the sorts of places I camp have signs posted saying gathering wood is not allowed.

Have had these for 10+ years, goes everywhere with me. Had a Silky but it bit the dirt two years in, not robust like the Bahco. These have a tough as nails blade, Silky's are thin but work as described, pull cuts only and bend easily if pushed. Yeah, this or a Agawa Canyon Boreal 21 is what you want. Thanks Luke.

Luke, I've never heard you use the word "legendary" to describe any piece of kit or gear before. I know you take care of your gear but you also put it through the hardest use you can find. So, the fact that the Laplander has survived 10 whole years of your testing really speaks volumes. Sometimes you get lucky and you get the best quality gear for the best possible price, it certainly is true in this case!! Thanks for all you do Brother.

Also purchased in 2013. The only con is that, at the time, I also purchased a spare blade, thinking that this would be absolutely necessary. I was wrong, and I wasted my money on the spare. In tens years I've never needed to change the original blade out for the spare. Overall, and excellent product, and highly recommended.

For the money it can't be beat, it's durable, it cuts stuff, it's compact. Sure those Silky saws cut nice, but the blades break and they're quite pricey, especially here in Canada.

I've been using one for 15 years and I only recently replaced the blade it originally came with. It never failed, there's no play in the mechanism, folding and locking works better than new. I remember being disappointed by the somewhat bendy grip back when I first got it, I thought I was going to break it in no time. It never did though, it's unbelievably tough. I've seen the Silky saws in action and it's true, they really are much faster, they're very flashy and impressive looking, but I can't justify the expense. A new Laplander blade cost me a fifth of a Silky Gomboy.
@fatmanfaffing4116

Luke, you will get a better grip using the lanyard if you hang the saw from your thumb, running the lanyard over the back of your hand, then turn your hand and grip the saw so the lanyard wraps around the back of your hand. This applies tension to the lanyard.

The Bahco laplander was my very first saw when I first got serious about camping the outdoors and bushcraft. It holds a sentimental value as a result, it has never let me down. Hey Luke love the review, but when it comes to this saw there is something that really does my head in. The blade they used to come with back in the 90's was called the "JT Pro 365" blade, a really superior blade than the ones they come with since they became popular in bushcraft. The are still available on amazon for a reasonable price, i have made the switch and have a couple of pairs spare in my shed. The difference between theese two blades is vast. The teeth are as aggresive as the silky saws but with the quality and strenght of the Bacho. The JT Pro blade multiply's its capability by 10 times but folks just dont seem to be interested and it seems some think its sacrelig to change the blade, but the JT Pro was the actual origional blade and is so much better than the one they come with today. Check them out, i thought this might interest you, Thanks Niall.

It's a great saw! I Upgrade to Silky Pocket Boy and sell the Bahco for small money to a Bushcraft beginner. Miss it, but I dont need 2.

Good review... The Bahco Laplander is very popular, like their tools. Bahco is made in Sweeden, like Mora, Fjällräven and Trangia... What's not to like... But I like my Silky Gomboy 240-10 better. It's cuts faster than the Laplander and it only cuts when you pull it...
