I picked this up a couple of months ago, fantastic festures, nice creamy background, excellent bokeh. I bought this instead of a cheaper macro and the 85mm 1.8 by Sony to cover portrait and macro! I wouldn't use it for video personally as the focus travel even when limiting is too long. I agree with sharpness though 👌🏼 My IG account is sc_photography_2020 All macro shots taken on this lens!
The 90 is a phenomenal lens. Paired with my a6000 it yields an effective focal length of 135mm and that is terrific for portraits. To be honest, I've used the 90 more for portraiture than macro work on both the a9 and my original a6000. Never regretted getting it over the 85 1.8.
Aravind Gopinathan Great to hear that you like using this with your A6000. I am thinking of buying it for my new A6400 but haven’t been able to see any reviews using it on a crop sensor sony camera. Any experience of macro work with it and the A6000?
Nice review. Those are not different speed settings on the lens. Those are the range of distance that you have to set according to your project needs, so that they lens does not hunt for focus from infinity to macro at every press. For e.g. The 0.5 to infinity settings will skip all the macro area, which saves time. If your sessions are macro, then the 0.5 to 0.28 setting will focus only in the macro area, and skip the further distance to save full range hunting time. But there are focus speed settings in the camera body, which are especially for videos.
I got these for my first lense with my first camera sony a7iii overall setup was pretty expensive but i think it was definitely worth it i have so much fun with it macro photography is my favorite thing to do i love it so much thank you for reviewing these lenses
Bought this lens recently primarily for marcro and have been watching many RU-vid reviews. Your review hits all the question points I had and is the best by far. Thanks!
Soooo, I forgot about this lens. I was gonna pick up the Sigma 85 1.4, but I think I rather get this one instead. I'm mainly a photographer here in Korea, but I'm starting to do videos more and more. This lens is great for both. EXTREMELY well-made video. Thanks.
Im a full time outdoor photo/video shooter that is not the easiest on their gear but do take care of it. I "put" this lens back in my bag with a small toss of about 6 inches into soft cleaning cloths and the lens motors broke... Currently getting repaired at Sony, waiting on a price. Just be careful heard this is slightly common.
@@StefanHeisu 600 bucks and 2 months later it was fixed by sony repair. Right after it was sold and bought the sigma 105mm and it has been kicking strong for 2 1/2 years. I still use it daily.
Finally, thank you for explaining the settings from full to the closest setting… thank for an awesome video. Question. Why does the lens, when doing macro, does it focus super close and when you take the actual photo it is much further away?
This was the second lens I bought when I moved to sony e-mount back in 2015 and I still use it almost everyday. I shoot a lot of food/drinks and this is the lens for all of that. I tried shooting people with this as well, but honestly I would recommend the 85 1.8 over this for people.
@@chrisbrockhurst Hey Chris, I find the focus a little on the slow side for events/weddings, and 1.8 gets more light in low lit places. The 85 is just a much faster and easier lens to work with for run and gun. But yes, the 90 is a much sharper lens with a much better image. The 85 can look very flat.
Hey Chris, do you think sony will update this lens anytime soon or its gonna be a long time and we should just buy it now? Thanks for a great video! Have a good one
Shooting with one of these for the first time, this friday for a product shoot! This was a nice, clean, concise breakdown and you've got me super psyched to get started now! Subscribed!
lightchild it’s super sharp ! i use it for straight photo. AF is great and pretty fast. i still trying to grasp the macro aspect of it. def need great lighting and a tripod for that. i tried one outside and did some focus stacking with it and it looks great on the computer
So across the camera platform... Sony, canon, fuji... I think this is the best macro lens. Haven't shot with the fuji 80mm, but I can't imagine it beating this one.
Do you experience any ‘movement’ in the lens? Particularly at close focus in manual? A slight clunk… not always there and disappears when OIS is switched off.
@@chrisbrockhurst cool. Mine comes in today. I’ve hoped that it would double as a macro/portrait for my wedding footage, but I’m a little nervous about the autofocus speed. We will see! 😊
Thinking about to trade my 85 1.4 GM and get this beauty, because it‘s cheaper, sharper, and i can use it for macro and my portraits also! What do you think about it? Worth it?
Interesting. I've got the Tamron equivalent (90mm f2.8 Macro) and a lot of the stuff covered in this video should apply. It's also got a reputation for being very sharp. Maybe I should take it out of the house now and then and see how useful it is for things other than macro photography.
Looks like a great lens indeed! But I wanted to know if you think it's a softer look than the 85mm 1.8? Because I know most people I'd shoot portraits with don't necessarily want that super sharp image and prefer to look softer usually.
I'd say you're better off with sharp images that you could "soften up" in post. Save a dedicated preset in Lightroom for just that if you want to cut down on editing time. Always better to have headroom, be able to tone down rather than have to artificially add sharpness!
Great review. I've been eyeballing this lens for a while. Maybe soon I'll get one. One thing that I find very helpful for macro is an off camera flash or on camera with the right defuser. Makes all the difference when a tripod isn't practical.
This is a particularly valuable review for me because I am planning on shooting video with a Sony A 7Siii. I may purchase a primary still Sony later. For my video shooting, it's this and the GM 28-70. Much thanks for your hard work.
Hey Chris did you ever do a comparison of the 90mm vs 85mm? I'm thinking i might swap my 85mm 1.8 out for the 90mm as it just seems like a more versatile lens
Hi, I m a dentist & a beginner in photography. Have got Sony 6100 with G90mm Macro lens but not able to use it convincingly for intraoral Or extraoral photos. Can u plz help in sharing d settings.
Very sneaky with the preset offer. I hereby declare it to be a deadcat / microphone windscreen. Excellent video and very timely for me. I bought the Viltrox 85mm 1.8 three days ago on your recommendation but I might return it and get the 90mm. The 85 is an excellent value for portraits but the 90 looks like it will do everything the 85 will do and more. The 90 is almost three times the price but given the versatility, it will pay for itself very quickly. There's only so much room in my bag so I'm leaning towards the 90. Thoughts? Your videos are excellent for my camera bag and terrible for my wallet. Much love for PIZZA.
I bought the lens last week. It was 100 dollars off. Thank you again for helping me decide. The lens is awesome. Haven’t tried it fully yet. Looking forward to take awesome macros and portraits with it. 🤟🏼
I have tried both. 90mm f2.8 is great. But man for weddings you need to edit your shots a lot with this lens. This is super sharp and captures all the unnecessary details. It is 2.8f so needs really good lighting. 85mm is better in AF, no dispute in that. Given a choice I would still pick 90mm for its versatility and colours. I am not a professional so don’t do much editing. If you are a professional, I would say stick with portrait lens. The one thing that impressed me the most about 90mm is that clutch for AF-MF. The best I have ever seen in any lens in my life.
This is not a zoom lens haha. You are probably talking about magnification for helping with the focusing and you can turn off that setting if you dont know how to frame shots
Just picked up a used one form B&H rated as 10/10 for $870! Fingers crossed the guy rating them knew what he was doing. I was wondering, do you have some videos planned for product videography?
Even better when Sony price matched the cheapest UK retailer then give you £100 cashback too 😋 £750 in total for a brand new lens with extended warranty! Super impressed
Just got mine today. Does yours have a loud autofocus motor? It’s not the OSS because when I turn it off it’s still making a noise, but when I put it into manual focus, the noise stops.
@13:06 - looks like human hair.. Btw thank for review. My interest is macro and portrait photography. Loved the details of lens. Plus I also like to get into street photography.. Is it good for street photography as well?
i think this is the best review on this lens i came across so far. still considering whether i should buy. loooking to replace me 85FE ... to make things more difficult sigma threw in a reeeeeally good 85 1.4 which is t he other candidate i am considering. i love the macro capabilities thzen again i like to have t he option to compensate for low light situations using lower apertures
Amazing lens! I have it too for my a7iii. I use it often for portraits and the sharpness is just crazy. The photo is a death cat maybe??? 🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️🙋🏻♂️
The GM is much faster, has a very shallow depth of field and a more pleasing Bokeh. I've got the 90 mm macro, just use it for macro where it really shines. Cheers. For portrait, I would recommend the viltrox 85mm 1,8. You get really good performance for just under 400 bucks.
