I had a HUGE branch from not pruning and I cut it and put it into moisture retaining potting soil on June 16 (I logged it in my journal) and last night when I checked it the roots are very well formed (thank you clear paint can liner). It will be going into a bigger container next week. I hope to start a few more that way.

Great video that shows how to deal with plants that have been damaged but have started to grow again. I tend to be lazy about pruning tomatoes and they have 3 or 4 good growing tops before I get to them. I usually cut one off and put it in water to root then plant them I have some real sturdy tomato cages, but this year I put in three 8foot cattle panel trellises. I used them for my melons (Sugar Baby Watermelon and Tiger melon) and cucumbers and I am real happy with them. I am trying to figure out how to add one or two more.

Thanks G. Scott, I do the posts 5 feet apart with the horizontal rails starting about 8" from the ground to tie the first time to the horizontal rail with 1" strips of cotton bed sheets with a figure 8 twist around the main stem. Then as they grow I put additional horizontal rails up about 12" higher.& tie them to that one.The BUGGERS don't tell me how they are going to grow, I tell them firmly, lol. All lower branches are taken off, leaving 4 leaf stems, then, when I have about 6 stems, I take the next two lower ones out, leaving 4 again, until 18" high.I Espalier the plants along the rails & always enjoy the results every year. Thanks to you Scott, this year I finally feel like I pruned my tomatoes correctly. This and another of your videos did a great job explaining how to identify a sucker, but then this...tells us not all suckers are bad. I have learned to visit the garden, especially my cabbages every morning, to pluck cabbage worms. I also utilized cattle panels this year, encouraged by your videos. it's interesting to see you training your tomatoes to two stems--most gardeners i see on YT tend to go single stem and space them very closely (12-24"). how do you like your two stem V-method compared to a single stem? do you think it's better for overall production to let them fork this way and maybe have a few less plants per row/bed but more growth per plant? this is my second year gardening and ive learned a lot from your channel! very good content and concise presentation.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 года назад
Because my season tends to be relatively short, my tomatoes don't reach the height that other single-stem growers do. The two stems give me more production. When I grew tomatoes in a greenhouse, single stems 12"-24" apart worked well and the plants reached 12'-15' high.
@ttb1513

This was very informative. I see @10:19 Gardener Scott is even more aggressive than just "2 stem V-method". Even with 2’ plant spacing he is able to have each branch of the V branch into its own V, etc. ; more than just a 2 stem method. Good to know what’s possible, since I used only single stem last year with same spacing. I’ll probably experiment with plant spacing AND number of stems.

Hi Scott, one more comment: This video could easily be titled "How to Recover Your Tomato Plants From Hail Damage." You must have been really disappointed when your plants got hit pretty badly by the hail storm. But the pruning techniques you show are really great. You may be a bit behind at this point, but with hot weather, they should catch up the rest of this month and into August. I also like how you planted the suckers. I have put them in water first to get some roots going, and then planted them, but that step may not be necessary.
@divinedbag
@divinedbag 4 года назад
i tried both of these methods to clone tomatoes this season and they both worked well. one thing i noticed is if you plant directly in soil they may wilt for a while and look like they aren't going to make it but they bounce back in a few days. getting the roots going in water first seems to make the transition easier, but is an extra step and make take a little more time.

@GardenerScott

Tomatoes can quickly take up a lot of space and that's why it's often recommended to remove teh suckers. It depends on how big you want the plant. Letting more of the branches grow will lead to more tomatoes.

If you can get a "roll" of 4x6 or 4x4 wire, use that. I used a 6ft x 100ft roll to make cages, I remember calculating pi x r squared to figure out how long a piece to cut and then roll the ends together. Cut the wire so you can use the cut to bend a "J" hook to connect the ends. Use pliers to make the "J" or you'll cut your fingers up...painful! Also, if the opening isn't big enough to harvest thru, cut the wire in the middle and bend it out of the way, do not cut right by the cross wire or you'll have a razor sharp edge that will cut your hands and arms to ribbons! They are sturdy and my tomatoes grew over the tops!
@jefffarris9238
@jefffarris9238 4 года назад
Hi Scott, thanks for the video. I know that a lot of growers use this vertical twine method, but it looks way too wobbly for my taste. This year I am using 7 foot and 6 foot bamboo or plastic stakes, and so far, so good. Next year, I am considering using the cattle panel method.
@jefffarris9238
@jefffarris9238 4 года назад
The only downside to the cattle panel method is you pretty much have to dedicate an entire bed to tomatoes. That's fine, but last year my tomatoes got decimated in August with either leaf spot or early blight. It started on one end of the bed, and made its way down the bed over a couple of weeks. This year, I have my tomatoes spread out in four raised beds and two grow bags to avoid them all getting hit one after the other by a disease.
@GardenerScott
@GardenerScott 4 года назад
Yes, a permanent trellis limits flexibility and is not my preferred method. That's why I like the cattle panel arches because I can move them easily to new beds each year.

Gardener Scott, the use of strings and the two types of cattle panel trellises is revelatory. Are all tomato clips designed to have a small pinch point to hold the twine and then the larger circle for the tomato branch? As I look on amazon to buy some, it is hard to tell, especially because some of the additional close-up photos show a tomato clip circling another branch tomato branch or the tomato clip circling one branch and a slim bamboo stake, not the string method. Thank you! My 6 toms, are each centered in one 12” square, which I now think may be too closely spaced, with a single pole for support in each square. I’ve been using twine around the pole and then have been trying to pull in the wayward branches to it. I think I learned this technique when a child in a summer gardening program in the 1960’s-way before tomato clips were invented. Now as a novice gardener I’m looking to Learn and Act to do better next time. I certainly ENJOY! My garden project. Thank you!

I try to include links to the things I use in the video description and I did that with this video too. Here's the twine: amzn.to/2Zj5Dz9

Questions.. i allowed my toms to grow like this it seems like I would have had more toms if I had pruned down to 2 main stems only like it was trying to spread too much of its energy. I only got about 5 or 6 toms from each and then they got blight is that a nutrients issue

It is a possible nutrient issue and/or the plant was stressed. Blight is a soil-borne disease and weaker plants are more susceptible.

Is there a reason why you let so many suckers grow? With my tomatoes I cut the suckers when they first show. July 4th visitors took most of your time maybe? Just wondering if there is a benefit to letting a few grow and then cutting them. Usually I let mine grow to 4-5 feet before i let suckers grow.

My weather is so harsh that I have to be careful. As I experienced with a recent hail storm, most of the branches and suckers were ripped off the plants in the storm. I need to wait until the plants are bigger to ensure I have enough growing points for them to survive.

I like to let a few suckers grow long before I remove them. I put them in water for a week or so, then plant them in pots. I have a little greenhouse I'm going to put up in late summer. The plants are then going inside it in 5 gallon buckets for a second, late-season tomato harvest.

This year, my first, I am using the cattle panels as Gardener Scott uses fro my cherry tomatoes. I planted them near the sides of the trellis and using clips to grow suckers in a pattern that takes advantage of the trellis framework along with string supports for the main trunk. They are growing well here in NH, about 5’ tall now with lots of green fruit and flowers. I have some shade tolerate plants in their shadow like some lettuces. I also have a couple of determinate tomato plants (ones that are really high in Lycopene) that I tie up with cord to support them and keep air flow. Thanks for all the tips and help.
