I think a lot of the controversial Oscar wins were correction Oscar’s, “hey sorry you didn’t get one when you should have so here’s this one”
@PhantomFilmAustralia
@PhantomFilmAustralia 5 месяцев назад
The "Consolation" or "Belated" Oscar. I'm not saying that _The Departed_ was a bad movie and not worthy of winning Best Director, but Scorsese losing for either Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino was simply criminal.

@PhantomFilmAustralia
@PhantomFilmAustralia 5 месяцев назад
@@fabrislemos Absolutely correct! Director Michael Mann knows how to pull riveting performances from his actors. Russell Crow for The Insider, Tom Cruise for Collateral, and the entire cast of Heat, all should have gotten Oscars. Michael Mann never winning an Oscar for Best Director is just criminal. Ridley Scott is another director who was unceremoniously snubbed by the Academy.

As the guy who has not yet seen Schindler's List, I can clearly say that the Fugitive was an excellent movie that wouldn't have worked without Tommy Lee Jones. He's that supporting actor who really is a second lead. Also, it could have been because they wanted to give that award to someone other than a Spielberg film. How would you have felt if Gloria Stewart had won Supporting Actress for TITANIC? Yes, I know that movie already won a bajillion Oscars and Stewart doesn't have a ton of screen time, but she is such a memorable part of that movie, and her face and narration are very haunting and a huge part of why it has such emotional resonance. It's also an accomplishment that you really believe her and Kate Winslet are playing the same character, despite them looking and sounding so different.
@navidhudson7065
@navidhudson7065 5 месяцев назад
That's my pick too, she was the heart of the whole movie. She made the character of Old Rose so memorable and deep especially with the good iconic lines she got to say like "a woman's heart is a deep ocean of secrets" etc. She probably came close to winning as she tied the Sag award with Kim Basinger plus she was a Hollywood veteran so she did have a lot of goodwill. This would've been a career win that I don't think people would have hated. When people think of the movie, they don't just think of Jack and Rose. They also think of her and her narration and yes she and Kate Winslet were so well cast as their young and old counterparts.

I think the main thing is exactly Benini's ACTOR win. His performance is really quite farce-y, bafoonish, over the top comedy and not in the way/style of the Academy. I was, as a European and a huge Italian cinema school fan kinda flattered for Academy choice for the Best Picture - deep down disagreed (Central Station is more of a universally deep and cinematic language-wise more relatable, self-explanatory movie), but understood. Sentimental, positive but WAR FILM. Hollywood adoooores WW2 ( and WW1 and any war to be honest)))) done with terrifying and gore detail and not as a backdrop, but as a main theme))) but choosing Benini for the Best Actor - ahem.... I almost fell off of my chair and not in the best way)) my parents watched the live broadcast with me that night, mum also was shocked, dad (a theatrical director) said - well, someone in the Academy finally had developed A GOOD TASTE))) For him Benini was great, exactly because this performance was over the top and absolutely different in a row of typical, predictable wins from decades before. But for me and mum it was a bit too much, felt wrong. The same win would be great in the Berlin, Cannes, Venice cultural and traditional frame, sure. But Hollywood trying to play "unconventional" in order to NOT GIVE IT to the ones who truly are deserving of the prize - that's... .... that's... that's both silly and vile to me.

And if there had been, it has nothing to do with winning an acting award. Will Smith has not even been charged with a crime, unlike several other Oscar winners. Your opinion about him winning should be limited to his performance as an actor. You moralizing about decorum has nothing to do with his performance in King Richard and doesn't even seem to apply to white actors engaging in violence and sexual assault on and off the telecast. I watched Sophie's Choice twice and Requiem for a Dream probably 3 times because they were so emotionally challenging. John Wayne should have been nominated for the shootist. I think it was his best film. Imo. The whole cast was wonderful. What a way to end his movie career. Plus, its aged well. And it didn't have him opposite some young female as a love interest. Lauren Bacall played an excellent role as someone who really didn't like Wayne's character Books.

Totally agree, especially the snub of Denzel in "Malcolm X." But, the Academy wasn't ready to give the award to an Af-American. His win for "Training Day" was basically "We're-sorry-we-didn't-give-the-Award-for-"Malcolm X." That was a much better performance. And, I also agree that Jim Carrey was overlooked for "The Truman Show." Great film and he was great in it.

Yes, Malcolm X was a great movie. Denzel was amazing in that role.

Henry Fonda for On Golden Pond. This was an Ooops award as he was close to death. Many better performances he should have won for.

I think a great video you should do is which Foreign Language winners should have on Best Picture instead of the actual winner

Not Life is Beautiful. Yes it's the saccharin sentimental favorite however it hasn't age well at all. I know it's against the law to be critical of Holocaust movies but c'mon.
