When I used to live in Ingham north QLD, you could watch the tropical fruit trees grow, if you stood their long enough!! 🌴🍌🍍🥑🍆🍍🌴🌴

I have to buy a frost cloth tent for my Cassava plants so I don't risk losing all of my 7 plants because sometimes they will make it through winter time in the Newcastle area but it's the cold & frosty July weather which killed my last 2 cassava plants. I have all of my jackfruit trees planted in a greenhouse which will change next year when I plant them in the ground so they may need frost protection for them then,I'll see. I would like to buy a decent greenhouse for that sort of property because the small green one that I have at the moment got blown down last year by the huge westerly wind gusts that we get in August so I had to support it with heavier stakes, rope, etc. I would like to be able to fit more plants in it as well, we had a 25°C day today & the greenhouse got up to 35°C inside of it. I have my prized tropicals such as Red Papaya,King Thai & Scarlet Delight mango seedlings, longan & lychee seedlings as well as my Valencia orange seedlings,red dragon fruit seedlings,my 5 Jackfruit plants & 1 orange Cempedak plant inside of it. We won't see 14°C during the day perhaps until July which is the coldest time of the year, we will have a freak 27°C day this week followed by some rain & 19°C days. It will stay that cool from late May up until at least mid September when things will start to warm up,in the tropics such at Cairns it will stay at 25-26°C throughout the day during winter time !

It was 22C and sunny in Melbourne on Sunday but then back to the teens again, too cold for me and for my ultra/tropicals. I've not had much luck with potted tropicals in greenhouses as I'm usually away in winter. So the next option is to plant them in the ground and cover, hoping for the best! 👌

I’m hoping my guava trees will survive the frost here, but I guess I’ll find out 😅 I only planted them this summer. I’m in Gloucester NSW, it gets pretty cold here mid to late winter.

The only inground guava I've lost to cold was Red Malaysian. Thai guava dies right back then reprouts in spring.

You've really taken protecting plants seriously this year George, beautiful neat job of wrapping up those young plants 😁👍

The ultra tropicals will definitely not make it without protection. They would probably need heaters under the fleece, but that's not possible having so many trees.

Good on you! I am up in the start of the sub tropics in Port Stephens NSW and my black sappote died real quick.

I find that frost is what killed mine at Seaham & last year I had a black sapote plant which was a few years old & in a pot which got stolen while I was at work. I am growing some more black sapote plants now however !

That's really surprising! I've had no problems keeping black sapote alive in Melbourne, only had some die back on branches due to drought.

I think it didn't like the sandy soil and the wind.

How cold is the Winter of Melbourne
@RealLifeFruitopia
@RealLifeFruitopia 5 месяцев назад
Not very cold winters, but very long. Long sleeves and slacks are needed between April and October, which means ultra tropicals need proper protection. Winter temperatures range from 0C-18C. Most days 14C.

Hiya from NZ, great vlogs, I really enjoy your commentary. Would you recommend covering one year old white sapote,Sue Bell, mountain paw paw, Ice-cream bean to protect from frost? Many thanks

Depends where in NZ? North Island no protection unless temps drop below 5C. South Island, protect every tree listed first winter.

Plastic greenhouse should be sufficient in Adelaide. Make sure it doesn't blow away, though.

@@RealLifeFruitopia Hi thanks for your reply The tree is next to a back fence so it should be fine, I just put greenhouse frame around it
