Close as you want to get as the tide strengthens and is channelled into Silverdale Bay.

Thanks for the back up. You are spot on. The bay is a a huge bottleneck so the incoming tide is unlike an open coastal area. It is a beautiful scenic area which tourists enjoy - but they forget the danger of being cut off by the advancing tide.

For those who seem to miss the point, probably because you're not from the UK: This bay is a huge expanse of sand. People regularly get caught out here, walking on the dry sand, not realising that the tide races in, as shown in the videos. You cant run forever, the tide can. There will only be one winner..people die. The shape of the bay creates a concentration of force in the flow of water. To see this in another form, search for "tidal bore""severn bore" Mascaret" or "Pororoca".

Amazing Spectacle and video.....As a child the family had holidays at Blackpool and we visited Morecombe Bay....I remember my late father telling us about the "danger" of the incoming tide...... I now live at Phillip Island..130klm south east of Melbourne...We have very dangerous surf (rips) on the southern coast but our Little Blue penguins could surely use a tide like that to surf home each evening. Thanx for posting and the wonderful memories.

Position this was taken from was just outside Silverdale, others from overlooking Jenny Brown's Point. Check for high tides from tide tables, Visitor, Gazette, Guardian. This time of year should get good views.

Nearly got caught out when I was a kid, leapt over a small tidal channel,5 ft wide, and you're on a sandbank, unaware that it is surrounding you, finding you can't go further, you go back, and 15mins later, the 5ft wide channel is 30ft wide and flowing like this, and growing by the second...........just about got off, soon after the 5ft wide channel was 100 YARDS wide.............be very careful out there.

We used to go for holidays every year when I was a kid, to Morecambe/Heysham. I remember the tide creeping up on us and getting taken by surprise many times whilst we were out on the sand bars looking for crabs and shells !! Amazing we didn't get into any major trouble because we had no concept of when the tide was due in or how fast it could cut us off :( Makes me shudder to think of it now !!

If I recall correctly this tide moves in faster than a man can run on solid ground! So what do you do when the tide comes in? You watch it from the safety of the beach. Or the cliffs. Or a video. ;¬)
