Awesome JohnnyFish! Love how you're using your homemade spore block. Great way be beneficial to your morel patches! We hang our big pine mushrooms flags, that are too old to keep, in the lower tree branches for the same reason.

That spot probably won't pop for for six year's minimum.This technique is long term. Like most things in life that are long term, they are reliable and pay off BIG. We will be visiting some spots soon that have been paying off for year's. Those spots received these same techniques. Thank you so much for your support.

You can do the same with a sprayer. You said you can not grow your own but then why do this ? Collect the morels in a bucket. Then add just water to clean them off. Use that spore filled water in s sprayer. Now spray the area you want. This works. Give it year or 2. Some places the 3rd year was best. I have started telling people last few years. It is something that can help.

Hey I just found your channel today. But can you do a explainer video on why some morels grow bigger than others? You seem like you know all about these pesky morels lol.
@johnnyfish6051
@johnnyfish6051 Год назад
Maybe. But don't get me wrong. Nobody truly understands the great Morel. I've just been doing this for a long time....a long time NOT finding them is what has made me. These are the common morel aka Morchella Americana or White Morel as an educated mycologist would describe them. I'm not one. There are about a dozen different species of morels right now and that's constantly changing. I and say I,call the the bigs in this video Yellows most wood classified these as whites or commons. I believe them be their own species, for now that could change. This belief is based on the striations in the stems. This is not common. These bigs were do to mist and fog in combination with the Sycamore leaf duff. Those morels EMERGED from the ground. They stayed under that duff for approximately two weeks protected from wind, sun and heavy rain. After a few weeks of slow growth under that duff they got 48 hrs.of all day mist and fog and high temperatures in the 40's. Cool weather after they pop promotes slow growth, a long season, and Big Morels! While these conditions when Morels are just forming UNDER the topsoil create "clusters". Rich ground, lots of moisture but not standing water, filtered sun light, cool weather( bellow 50) and that Sycamore leaf duff! Those were 10" shrooms some weighed half a pound on their own! And were UNDER the leaves. So lucky to find them! WOOooo long one. Credit the leaf duff! Thanks.

I made a spore block and the top layer of my block turned really dark does this happen to some of your blocks also I used apple tree as my base for sawdust and I blended fresh morels so you think that could be the difference in color?
@johnnyfish6051
@johnnyfish6051 Год назад
Yes. Turnning dark is normal as most wood or wood fibers will do during decay.
@johnnyfish6051
@johnnyfish6051 Год назад
Also, you should let the morel fully dry so it " spores out." A fresh morel will have spores in it, but a fully aged and dried morel will have MORE, lots more. Next time do a spore print of the morel first. Then add it to the mix. A morel needs atleast a few weeks drying to produce all its spores and be fully productive. Thanks!

What month do you nail the spore blocks to the trees?
@johnnyfish6051
@johnnyfish6051 Год назад
Any time. I believe spores stay dormant until need.
@johnnyfish6051
@johnnyfish6051 Год назад
If anything the block slowly breaks down over time and at some point spores will be used as needed.

walnut sawdust is not good around flowers or plants ... maybe ok for mushrooms ? i wouldnt risk it
@johnnyfish6051
@johnnyfish6051 Год назад
Good eye! Shouldn't be much walnut in there. Those slabs were all chain saw cut even the cross cuts. But very good point and type of sawdust definitely needs to be discussed. The walnut are my sons project some spindles if their in the background might have been cut on the table but not much. Off topic, I don't like walnut, too dark though I have turned a few salad bowls with it and some inlays. The lighter colors in the mix was grey to the core old exterior barn cedar. But to be honest there's pvc, fiberglass, recycled wood paint poly, glue from plywood, pressed board. Yeah whole things bio hazardous. But the soil along the rivers i pick have way more contamination in it than my spore blocks including....drum roll!.... fungicide! See ya THANKS!
